Title: Skype for phone calls Post by: outragous76 on July 25, 2011, 03:28:13 PM Does anyone know much about this? Or even better use it?
I contract to a firm where basically I need to be able to take calls. I am thinking of spending a month in Spain (but working whilst there) and wondered whether I can set up a skype telephone account in order to take/make these calls, and not end up with a £bazillion mobile phone bill. Is this a good/my best option. Does it feel like a normal phone line when in use (I am not concerned about a weird telephone number) thanks for any advice G Title: Re: Skype for phone calls Post by: HP on July 25, 2011, 06:14:15 PM I use skype all the time, although not for business reasons.
You can put skype credit onto a normal skype account. For calling a landline it costs around 1.9p a minute, so very little. When calling a mobile its abour 14p a minute. Both these prices are the same whether calling from spain to england or england to england, ie being abroad dosnt matter (as far as I'm aware - i can certainly ring England from Germany for the prices above). I haven't got a skype telephone number though, so if people want to ring me they also need a skype account. Pretty sure its fairly cheap ringing etc with a skype number too but not totally sure! hope this is helpful anyway! Title: Re: Skype for phone calls Post by: StuartHopkin on July 27, 2011, 08:38:48 AM Not sure what Dan was doing to get charged that much?
Main issue with Skype is that its shit. Title: Re: Skype for phone calls Post by: rex008 on July 27, 2011, 08:47:10 AM Err, I may be misreading, but does he mean 0.54p? As in just over 1/2 a penny? Or does that mean 54p?
According to here (http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/prices/call-rates/cheap-calls-to-united-kingdom/?currency=gbp), landline calls are between 1.4 and 0.7p /min, mobiles 14.9p/min. So I suspect he meant 1/2 a penny. These prices are $ converted to £, so exchange rate could make it that. With a decent internet connection VOIP (voice over IP) can work well, and Skype is obviously the most well-known in this area, although there are others you can use that might give you a more reliable service, Title: Re: Skype for phone calls Post by: marcro on July 27, 2011, 10:31:46 AM I regularly use skype to make overseas calls and the quality has always been good. The cost of the call is something like Euro 0.02/minute so you do not have much to lose.

Title: Re: Skype for phone calls Post by: DMorgan on July 27, 2011, 02:48:22 PM Yeah I meant just over half a penny a minute. Six or seven phone calls to a UK landline cost me about £2.50 and had no call quality problems at all

However, since I had 3G turned off (roaming charges are stupid abroad), I could only use skype when I had access to a wifi connection. Something to maybe consider? Check your network provider, I'm pretty sure I saw some networks offer free roaming in Europe and even free to recieve calls.
