Title: Championship
Post by: jjandellis on August 05, 2011, 09:45:41 PM
1 - 0 away win, good start to the season for the Seasiders  ;D

Players still to gel and more on the way.  I think we need a new striker, but am also hoping Clarke/Sutherland shine. Clarke was out most of last season and I'm hoping he'll repay our faith and fulfil his promise. Sutherland has looked very lively pre season by all accounts.

Quietly confident of at least a play off spot...

Many more Championship fans on here fancying a thread??

Interesting game, thought Blackpool lucky to win as Hull had 2-3 1v1's and clear cut chances. Saying that both team looked decent.

In all honesty I think you will probably enjoy this league more than the Prem. A good standard, with no standout favourites, good honest pro's, decent crowds (4th or 5th best supported in the world is it?) and some real thrilling end to end stuff. Enjoy the ride!

Meh, thats what Brent said to me. I understand what your saying but i want prem footy.

The largest stand is the three-tiered West Stand, which will hold 11,833 spectators. The East Stand (the Family stand) will hold 5,404, the North Stand 2,688, and the South Stand, which will contain away supporters, 2,575.

Thanks! Went to the last game at Goldstone in 1997 V donny so 2mo should be good.

You coming down when you play us on 20th? I am on holiday for that one, should be a good game with two passing teams though.

CMS will prove to be the best signing of the season imo.

Think Brighton have done extremely well there.

Fancy them tomorrow too. Doncaster don't travel well so will have a bit of wedge on Brighton to win.

Too much loving for Brighton in this thread!!!!

After the last couple of years we have had will settle for mid table obscurity.
Tough start with only 1 of last seasons back 4 available for the first month!

Title: Re: Championship

I'm off to watch Barnsley at Forest today.

As usual we're favourites for relegation but I think we'll be clear of it this season.  Hill and Flitcroft as a management team have created a huge feelgood factor in a short space of time and our team of no-names looks to have gelled nicely as a unit.

We'll have our usual ups and downs but I think we'll be comfortably mid-table and may cause a few surprises.

Not sure what to expect today - trying not to get carried away by impressive, but ultimately meaningless, pre-season performances.  I just hope that Dutch Boy McLaren is talking about points dropped in his weird accent at the end of the day.

Good point today against a disappointing Forest side.

First chance to see all our new signings and was impressed on the whole.  Perkins looks lively, Wiseman and Edwards solid at the back, Davies showed flashes up front and will improve.  Particularly impressed with Miles Addison, who looks clumsy (a la Carlton Palmer) but did a solid job in the heart of midfield.

Happy enough with that as a start.

Really good win today for us, lots of Midlands local derbies in this league and we'll tend to take points off each other so this is a good start

Not sure I quite believe the hype yet, but certainly the team looks strong on paper and there is a lot of money to keep throwing at it until sept and in Jan

We've had a £7m bid for Shane Long in for example which meets Readings valuation but they'd like to sell him into the Prem rather than to a rival.

Very impressed with Southampton today.  They look well organised, fluid and have lots of attacking threat throughout the team.  Passed us off the park today.

I had them down as play-off contenders at the start of the season and, after seeing them, I definitely think they'll achieve that, at the very least.

As for us, we need to develop an attacking threat PDQ or we're going to prove the bookies right at last.  3 games, including one vs Morecambe, no goals and very few clear cut chances created across the 270 minutes.

The optimism of a week ago is evaporating quickly!

What a finish to the game last night, 1 down as the clock struck 90 we managed to get 2 goals in injury time to nick it.
Was fully deserved, and have to say I have not seen a palace side try to play as much football as they did last night for years.
Wilf zaha is destined for the top if he can just find an end product and another youngster in 17 year old Jon Williams was given his debut and made the equaliser.

I think we will struggle away from home again this season as we just aren't physical enough, but was a real delight to watch last night.

Tunchev on loan from Leicester has been pretty solid both Saturday and last night, what are your views on him tighty?

3rd home defeat in 8 days for Barnsley last night, including the Carling Cup match vs Morecambe.  As per the game vs Southampton we were completely outclassed and conceded 3 of the softest goals imaginable.

We did notch our first goal of the season, so our leading scorer is now 'Own Goal'.

In his post-match interview, Keith Hill said he couldn't criticise the team and then said it was the supporter's negativity that was the problem.

[ ] Good times at Oakwell
[ ] Keith Hill won over his critics last night (I wasn't one of them, but his comments yesterday stunned me)
[ ] I still believe we'll do well this season with this squad
[ ] I can think of something positive to report to counter the negativity in this post.

Made my first trip to the KC stadium yesterday, one of the better new grounds IMO.
Bloody long journey but not so bad after picking up 3 points. We only one one away match all last season, but this team has a real spirit and determination about it and hopefully more will follow.
3 wins in a row but still not getting carried away as those have been against burnley, Coventry and hull, none of which look good enough to be top 6.

Tunchev exceptional again, and Jonathan parr could be one of the signings of the summer, has been superb in all 4 matches this season and made yesterday's goal with first determination and secondly some great skill down the line.

We still have 6 first team players out, so expecting a few academy players to play against Crawley on tuesday.

Didn't see the game, but I'll settle for 2-2 away to Brighton! From what I've heard they're a really slick side. Kevin Phillips get out of jail card for us again in the last minute. Might chuck some on him for top scorer - not bad for an old boy!

The draw makes up for the defeat against Derby, who were all over...

You looked hopeless then Holloway made 3 subs and you looked very good. Quite an odd game, think on balance you should have lost but a draw was no great injustice.

Barnsley were unlucky not to beat Leicester today - Schmeichel made a couple of outstanding saves at the death.

For all the money they've spent this season, they're the worst side I've seen of the 3 that have visited Oakwell this season (Southampton, Middlesbrough, Leicester).  Big names and big money throughout the team, but far less effective as a unit.  Can't see how people continue to put faith in Sven when all he ever does is spend more than the teams he's competing with.

Beckford looks dangerous though and should do well at this level, after a disappointing spell at Everton.  Compared to the other money they've splashed around he looks a bargain at £2.5m (which is still probably more than the entire Barnsley squad cost).

he scored a goal every 154 mins on the pitch for everton and was there top scorer i believe. Most games he was sub, towards the end of the season and this one I bet Moyles saw him as his main goalscorer, shame Everton are skint i think he would have done ok for them again.

I agree.  I think he's just one of those natural goalscorers and he'll get his shot at the Premiership again soon enough (maybe not with Leicester).

Given the stupid money that's being splashed around these days £2.5m looks a steal to me (if you're one of the clubs that can afford to splash £2.5m around, that is!)

Incredible point for us at Derby, given the team we put out.

11 players out injured, so forced to put 3 Academy youngsters on the bench - one 18yo, 2 17yos.

33 mins in, Perkins gets injured so one 17yo comes on for his debut.  5 minutes later another injury gets covered by our only senior outfield player on the bench.  77 minutes - another injury and the other 17yo is brought on after making his debut last week due to the same injury crisis.

In the meantime, we're 1-0 up after 35 minutes, then hanging on for dear life after they equalise on the hour from a penalty.

Feels like a win, even though it's yet another draw.  Still unbeaten away from home (albeit still without a win at home!)

Don't think I've known an injury crisis quite as bad as this at the club.

Sadly, keeping you behind for 30 minutes wouldn't make much difference, it is all pre arranged trouble, and keeping you in for 30 minutes means only 2 train loads would have left, and loads of brighton fans stay behind drinking in the concourses until 10.30PM.

You were loud from 1-1, but before that you were only loud when you sung a song which was not often (or may just be because I could not hear).

What were your impressions of the Amex?

Only positive from the night was Murray didn't score the winning goal!

BBC Radio Leicester commentary at Turf Moor tonight

Alan Young, Scottish striker from the 70s. Sandwich short of a full loaf

Stringer: "Danns is having to go off here, what's that about?"
Young: "It's something with his hair"
Stringer: "Really?"
Young: "Definitely his hair, the ref's told him it's dangerous"
Stringer: "Are you sure it's not just some blood?"
Young: "No there's no blood, he's told him he's got dangerous hair!"
Stringer: "Dangerous hair? That's ridiculous, Valderama would have no chance"
Young: "I know"
Stringer: "But he's got a towel being passed to him, are you sure?"
Young: "Ah, no, it might be a bit of blood"

Don't know why such a small and obviously sensible decision makes me happy but I love that the ref didn't book Billy Sharp tonight.

Anybody think Derby at 2/1 at home are a big price? Why are cardiff getting tore into in the betting? they have been shortening past few days now?

Stats from BBC:

• Derby picked up their first win in six games, with Saturday's 3-1 home triumph over Portsmouth.(BAD)
• The Rams are undefeated in four at home, having won two and drawn two since Burnley's victorious visit to Pride Park on 27 August.(GOOD)
• Cardiff, who drew 1-1 away to Leeds on Sunday, have completed six away league games without victory.(GOOD)
• The Bluebirds are 11 points down on this same stage last season.(GOOD)

Over the past 50 games between them tho Cardiff have been a bit of a bogey team for Derby; winning 24, drawing 13 and losing 13.... I don’t really buy into what happened 10 years ago etc though. Derby have had a better start to the season too this season. I think 2/1 is the wrong price; so will no doubt finish 3-0 cardiff.

Think 9/4 with VC, and just under that BF are both worth taking

Have to admit I was very impressed with Hull City last night.  Played some very neat football and have lots of threats through the team.  McLean and Brady stood out in particular last night.

Getting 3 points against them was a great result for us, although we were hanging on a bit at the end and screaming for the final whistle to come.

I liked Hull pre-season and had a big bet @ EVS for them to finish above Leeds.

Leeds looking a lot better than I thought they would to be fair, thought they'd struggle a bit, got that wrong.

Not seen Leeds play yet so hard to judge objectively, but I'd put Hull's performance up there with Southampton and Middlesbrough.  Thankfully, we also decided to turn up to this game too, but the result could just have easily gone the other way last night.

Hmm Barnsley were the worst team I have seen this season, in terms of effectiveness, but not played the worst football, similar to Doncaster really. Drinkwater was very good (Except for his 3 shots that hit the corner flag). Glad we got rid of Davies, he was useless. You had around 10 shots from 25 yards + but that was about it really.

International break now, so first teamers El Abd, Hoskins, Reyes, Vicente, Buckley should all be back by then !

We also need to decide whether we can push for a play off spot or have a relegation fight this season........happy with say 12th this season after all the shite that's been going on.

Season is a write off for me.  As long as Derby and Leicester fail, I'm happy.
