Anograms were by far the hardest questions. I answered the only one i could figure out. Without actually having to write all the letters down in a circle etc.

Can I get a general consensus on something before we start.

If a plane blow ups/ explodes/ catches fire/ loses pressure/ malfunctions in some way, and heads towards the ground and someone falls out of the plane and dies but doesnt actually die on impact - is this dying in a plane crash?

The spirit of Cf is strong in this one.

Where is this farce going to rank on the pedantometer?

Word of advice.  Farce can be avoided by restricting updates to around 8.30-8.45 (depending on injury time) then taking a 45-50 minute break before resuming matters, IMO!

5 mins to go. Hopefully plenty are in attendance for tonights reveal... Q1 results to follow shortly. Please try to object as quickly as possible (or not at all) as I reserve the right as QM to reject an objection purely because its too late and we've moved on!

Pretty hard to have any objections there unless I've done something blatantly stupid... so I'll move swiftly on as I'm expect some mayhem later. Also not posting the scores yet cos its pretty easy to tell after one question imo.

Moving on to question 2...

His definition of famous (which is obv ridiculous) is that they must have a decent wikipedia entry.

Just to warn all of you. Stato is extremely stubborn and proud and will never ever admit that he's wrong. He is using wikipedia to decide on all the questions as well. So if you fancy getting an objection/pass through - just log on and invent an article and he'll believe you. What a joke.

Yeah, Alex!

i dont think you needed to "tap" that one in danny, it was clearly already implied.

chinese is not a language

When written I think it is.  The correct answer to be fair would have been Traditional or Simplified Chinese but I am pretty sure as a written language it would be referred to as Chinese.  Sure someone else (Paul Ho??) can explain better than me though.

Again no expert on this but my understanding is that Mandarin and Cantonese are spoken dialects but when it comes to the writen characters it is Traditional or Simplified Chinese but they don't correlate to a dialect as such.

Title: Re: RSQ 71: Farce the Sugar
Post by: redarmi on August 17, 2011, 09:45:11 PM
Perhaps a better way to put it would be that the written language and spoken language aren't the same thing in China in so far as that they all read the same language but don't speak the same language if that makes sense??

Title: Re: RSQ 71: Farce the Sugar
Post by: kinboshi on August 17, 2011, 09:50:57 PM
Think you're correct on the whole redarmi and Mandarin and Cantonese are spoken dialects, but (coincidentally) traditional Chinese is used more in regions outside the mainland, and these areas also are the ones that speak Cantonese.

Also of interest is that Japanese has two syllabary sets of characters (hiragana and katakana) and also uses about 2,000 Chinese characters as well.

These 'kanji' have one reading in Mandarin or Cantonese (I think) , but in Japanese some have several different ways of reading them according to the context (some have as many as 20 different readings).

The Japanese for blonde can be written as it was in the quiz above, but can also be written as 金髪 or きんぱつ.
