Title: Beagles Post by: Junior Senior on August 20, 2011, 10:16:01 AM Thinking of getting a Beagle, obviously going to do research first but wondered if anyone on here has one or knows of any good / bad beagle stories that would help me? I.e. good with children? do they need constant attention? do they eat a lot? etc...

As a general rule Bitches are friendlier and less likely to be aggressive than Dogs, but Beagles are on the whole very placid (with the very rare exception). They are quite needy and crave attention if they are the only dog in the house (which could also be described as great companionship) and they are very very greedy when it comes to food, they will scavenge anything they can. Our one accidentally got into a bin a few days after Christmas and polished off an entire turkey carcass, about a dozen mince pies and half a big cake. If fed properly they don't eat too much but all dogs are fairly expensive these days if you include insurance, injections, micro-chipping etc. Title: Re: Beagles Post by: DaveShoelace on August 20, 2011, 11:51:15 AM Yeah echo what Tommy said, friendly dogs, do require a lot of attention, very greedy and not the greatest dogs off the lead because the follow their noses quite a lot. Both Beagles I have had experience with were forced to go on diets because they were very greedy and would eat anything (even stuff thats not food).
But gentle, friendly, and have lovely floppy ears. I'm incredibly biased but if you want a fun gentle family dog, get a Labrador. They are a working dog and because of this need to have a job or something to replace that job or they'll go nuts. Sitting around the house all day doing nothing then having a walk for an hour won't be enough. If you're planning on doing loads of interactive activities such as tracking then it's a perfect dog. If not I'd pretty much echo what the shoelace says and get a lab.
