Sorry, presume there have been threads for this before but always nice to start a fresh un.

My missus wrote off our car this week, bless her. Now looking to get another one, I already have one so its mainly for her to get to work and back, and only occassionally will it go long distance.

Main priorities are reliability and fuel efficiency. I already have a few ideas in my head (basically Toyota granny wagons), but always get some decent feedback from this forum so if any suggestions for a car around £3k, suits a lady, reliability is important?

I know someone who could sell you a nice number plate for a little less.

My brother and his wife have a Volkswagen Golf. Granted they have a a higher end model but it's very reliable and has never caused them any bother. I think the economy and costs of one of the smaller diesel models would be low and coupled with their reputation as reliable would be ideal.

regrettably that lasted about 7 hours, but it was fun at the top while it lasted, obviously blew all the money on hookers and blow in those 7 hours.

Really depends on your priority

You are not getting a trouble free golf for 3k but could look at polos? Compared to the fiesta it will be more efficient but probably have less features.

The beauty of the 2nd car Market is that features tend to be selling points rather than value adders

Even 2nd hand you will really struggle for a half decent golf for anywhere near 3k..they are VERY pricey, even 2nd hand

With price being an issue wouldn't a Skoda or one of their other cheaper brands be a better bet?

to save monies, buy in bulk maybe so she has a few spare when this one gets written off?

I was just relating it to when I bought a couple years back. I got a 2001 Lexus for 3.5k and I've had no problems at all since the day I bought it. I just thought they would be similar prices to VW.

In fairness I shouldn't be offering any advice on cars as I am absolutely clueless and know nothing more than how to fill it up with petrol :D

you can get a decent VW for £3k'ish..but not a golf..they are ridic expensive. I had one as a hire car when my Audi was in the garage and it drove like a dream (brand new, very tasty indeed) so I thought "Well, I might get me one of these bad boys next time"..had a look online and saw that the exact model of Golf I had (with loads of extras) was 26k. they also hold their value ridic well.

Just had a look on Autotrader, the only VW Golfs near the £3k mark are from 2004 (7 years old, one is 3200, the other is 3600. this is on a Nationwide search with 40k max miles)  and there are only 2 of them listed nationwide. The next lot are all 4k+.

They are ridic expensive compared to other small cars.

Yeah I guess I was just wrongly gauging things on my car, they're very popular cars and for good reason I guess so the price reflects that. Love Audi though and my fave car ever was an Audi!!

If you're prepared to go a little bit higher I know where there's a brand new Fiat Panda going very soon.

My mum's just won it and is probably getting rid but doesn't want the hassle of a private sale.

That means it'll go to a dealer who no doubt will knock a load off what it's actually worth.

If you're interested you'd only have to match what the dealer offers.

I was looking at A8s and there are some very good deals going on those, I was also looking at S500s as those are quite cheap too. I guess the current tax prices and fuel costs are obviously driving the prices down. I'd be looking at 8/9yo Mercs or 6/7 yo Audis so nothing that expensive. I know the costs of parts are obviously much higher but I've got a couple friends who work for Mercedes/Audi.  I wouldn't be that worried about service stamps as I wouldn't sell the car on and would just run it into the ground.

My dad has been berating my intentions and telling me to not be so daft. I don't do huge miles and I just fancied something that is nice to drive as I intend on maybe doing a bit more poker related travelling in the coming year or so. I'll probably not bother and just take the mobility car as it's the most sensible option and would free up more funds for Vegas trips :D

can you still get some pretty cool cars for not a lot of money on mobility marky? there used to be a lot of good options but won't be surprised if they've cut back a lot

if anyone is interested my mums car is a 53 plate golf 1.6 petrol and is valued at about £3k. my wife has been running it this month because it uses a third of the petrol that her merc uses. it is part of my mums estate but as the car was originally my sisters i have told her that she should get rid of the car and let her kids have the cash. i know that my sister would accept an offer considerably less than £3k because she cant be arsed with the hassle of advertising it and selling it etc get in touch or pm if interested

If you don't do a lot of miles and you know people that can do you a favour when it comes to servicing and parts you should get yourself a lovely car mate. I always used to buy old Mercs (Had a LOVELY c280 sport 2 cars back...man I loved that car...had ALL the luxuries...sniff..better even than the old Jag I used to drive and I loved that car as well) but they are pricey on the road. My Audi isn't pricey (A6 1.9 TDI) when it comes to tax and diesel but parts are horrifically expensive and all Audi Mechanics up in Central scotland seem to be complete tosspots.

Buying a cheap run around is cheap but you don't get the joy out of it that you would out of a luxury car. Like you said, luxury cars are cheap at the moment because of petrol prices and tax..but if you don't do tonnes of miles petrol won't be as much of an issue.

Not sure what it used to be like but for a decent Mondeo you're looking a couple bags and the same for a Vauxhall Insignia. You can get a smart Astra for a grand though. I've not looked too deeply yet as I've still got to wait until March when my old ban is 5 years old. I'll start looking after xmas and then see what I can get before deciding which way to go. I'm probably gonna go the way I should do and take the mobility vehicle unless I somehow win the lotto :D

We got a really good deal on a 2006 Ford Focus, 40k miles on the clock, got it for £3k after some haggling.

She crashed it again this morning, sigh (Wasn't her fault this time but sigh, its fixable thankfully)
