Title: Living in/around Cambridge...? Post by: winkie on October 20, 2011, 07:05:25 PM Does anyone live in or around Cambridge? What areas are OK and which areas should be avoided?
I'm looking to rent somewhere initially and as a rough guide my requirements are: - minimum 2 beds (ideally a house, but will consider flat/appartment) - quiet location - easy access to major roads (I'll be working towards the north of Cambridge) Cheers, winkie Title: Re: Living in/around Cambridge...? Any help much appreciated... :) Title: Re: Living in/around Cambridge...? Post by: Sheriff Fatman on October 21, 2011, 11:35:07 PM I lived there as a student, but I can't really advise much to help you as it is a VERY different city to live in as a student vs a non-student as the University is so dominant around the place. I had access to many areas that would be off-limits to the general public and the University buildings / Colleges are pretty much everywhere. Consequently, my experience there is too distorted to be of any real help to you.
I spent 3 years living smack bang in the city centre, but I doubt that there's any non-student accomodation around there. Couldn't tell you much about the 'bad' areas, as such, although the grottier areas seemed to be as you went away from the city centre down Newmarket Road (towards the football stadium). Nothing terrible, as cities go, just a bit more industrial compared to the city centre. One thing I can tell you is that the city is not designed with a car owner in mind. Plan on using a bike/public transport a lot of the time you're in/around the city centre or be prepared to pay exhorbitant parking fees on the rare occasions you can find a parking space. Park and ride is also an option. A14 and M11 are the main routes in and out, and it's not a huge city so both are accessible relatively quickly via the ring roads but the A14 in particular seems to get jammed fairly frequently. Title: Re: Living in/around Cambridge...? Post by: winkie on October 22, 2011, 10:20:20 PM Thanks Sheriff. Only planning to use the car to drive to work, otherwise it's walking or using the bus to get around the city.
Cheers Chompy for the advice... i might venture to Luton sometime in the next 6 months. What's at St Neots? Title: Re: Living in/around Cambridge...?
