Socrates was their captain, playing alongside names such as Zico, Eder, Junior, and Falcao. Thanks to my Panini sticker album I knew them all by sight and the football they played was just breathtaking. Just a pity they had no interest in defending, which ultimately cost them their place in the World Cup in an epic match vs Italy.
Socrates was probably one of the last 'old fashioned' footballers (i.e. one with a 40 a day smoking habit and a love for a drink or two). Ultimately the drinking looks to have contributed to his death at 57. It was only a few years ago that he made a bizarre appearance in an English non-league game (can't remember the details but it made the news at the time). RIP Socrates. The 8 year old inside me thanks you and your team for the memories. A Scottish guy I used to share a house with said he went mental when Narey scored in that game, only to look around at all the adults in the room who were shaking their heads, looking worried, and saying that they'd only gone and upset them! Lol, great strike though. I believe he was only 57. Great player, great memories Geo Title: Re: RIP Socrates Post by: Teacake on December 04, 2011, 04:58:16 PM That 82 Brazil team were better than the 1970 team - the game against Italy was amazing. That's a bit of a call, Brazill 1970 are pretty much regarded as the best team ever. Brazil 82 were probably the best team never to win to the WC although Holland 74 would have to be up there. Great player in a great team, RIP Socrates ;tightend; Title: Re: RIP Socrates Post by: pleno1 on December 04, 2011, 05:06:10 PM did he used to smoke alot iirc?

Socrates was a legend. A majestic player, with a great beard. Title: Re: RIP Socrates Post by: Teacake on December 04, 2011, 05:40:38 PM Fantastic goal, love the celebration

I remember the playground buzzing with the names of Zico, Eder, Junior and ofcourse the wonderfully named Socrates. A great loss!
