Title: Is this bad? #1
Post by: zerofive on December 04, 2011, 06:41:33 PM
50/1 table at Dusk, playing pretty deep (couple of £300+ stacks) we cover. Shortest stack at the table is villain in this hand, playing like £250~ he joined the table probably three or four orbits ago and hasn't really played many hands, but also hasn't gone to showdown yet. Seems pretty TAG, but reckon he probably has some moves etc. Not entirely sure what my image at the table is.

Pre: two folds, tight passive guy opens to £6, I call from the cutoff with Kc 8c, villain makes it £26 from the button. Blinds fold, OR calls, I call.

Flop (£79.50) Js 8s 3h

Check, I check, villain bets £55. The other guy in the pot snap folds. I call.

Turn (£189.50) Js 8s 3h 2h

I check. Villain tank shoves £145. I call.

Is this okay?

3b or fold pre.

Fold to the 3b now.

Is this okay?

No. Fold/3b pre. Fold to the 3b. Fold flop, fold turn. This aside, it is okay :)

Why are we folding turn? What do we think he has? Just looks like AK, which obv we don't exactly crush pre but we're beating now. Can it really be this bad?

i've been telling people for years that K8 sooted is the nuts, but you need spades tbh.

you beat exactly AK. which is defo in his range, but so is everything else

dont think people jam as a bluff here alot and in live cash they will often just check and try and get their flush otr. have to remember live cash is a completely different animal

We have a K though, AK less likely.

AA KK QQ JJ AJ KJ QJ 88 just off the top of my head, board looks wet so it's wrong to completely discount fast play when players will definitely do this often.

Calling pre in both spots is setting money on fire, if you're making these sort of calls routinely then that's a big leak you need to look at.

Sean, even I might consider folding this hand pre.

Make of that what you will..... ;-)

I think you need some pretty decent reasons to be hero'ing here, so far all we have is;

decent(ish) Villain, buys in for £250, doesnt get involved in his first four orbits then 3bets from the SB and cbets then jams a turn when its obvious you have something.

I don't know what he has done that means we can discredit him from having Aces/kings/queens, we have no info so cant make too may judgements on his bet sizing.

Just give him credit for a premium hand imo, if he's bluffing then fair play w/e he's told a good story and people are allowed to bluff.

Okay this is good news. I think there's been enough discussion for me to reveal that I was villain in this hand. I thought hero was a thinking player, but was revealed here that hero is just a hero.

Actual hand was the Aspades 5s. Should I be checking back this turn? Seemed like a decent spot to jam when I'm clearly repping a massive hand and villain is capable of folding pairs. Plus I have a bunch of outs. How are we playing this hand? Please don't include "well he's likely to call the turn with second pair second kicker so check back ldo." :P

In this case yeah i quite like a turn jam to max our fold equity. Considering the texture and being stack size aware you're surely gonna be doing the exact same with AA here.

Hi Sean,

I wasn't involved in this but watched it all go down. I was sat to your opponent's right and I was in a mard nursing a short stack just passing the time until I felt more sociable...but enough of my grumnpyness..

The problem with this hand is the player you were up against.

Without naming names, he is a known station, had been winning all night so had an over enflated sense of his abilities and was more inclined to call light, especially to a shove that looks like what it is - either a massive over pair or AK and/or missed draw. At the time I thought you either had him crushed or had feck all and sorry to repeat it, but the trouble is here you are just making this move against the wrong player.

Against him you had about 5% fold equity, against someone like me, considerably more. When he calls your c-bet he has something and this sort of player doesn't need much encouragement to call with (in his mind) other peoples' chips.

You basically hadn't been at the table long enough to make moves like this on a very standard, wysywig 50p/£1 table

Anyway, that is my two penneth and keep up the blog, it is the best out there and wasted on a poker forum.

Good post sir.

If you never ever bluff in a 50/1 game you won't go far wrong. You can certainly make money in those games JUST value betting and making good calls/fold.

Don't 3bet the button here vs tight passive early position opens. He's folding pretty much never, therefore the CO isn't folding either.

As played, checking turn here would be lolbad imo.

So many draws where he calls it off with worse and his range is ridic capped. This player type is never flatting this flop with 2pr/sets and he'd need to be a huuuuuuuge station, like, astronomically bad for us to assume that he doesn't fold Jx some of the time (remember he still gets to the turn with J7, J9, JT) and 8x the majority of the time. Even when he does hero it off with his capped 1 pair range you've still got 15 outs.
