Title: Odds
Post by: Newportlad on June 16, 2005, 01:28:58 AM
At the Grosvenor Cardiff casino tonight, i was lucky enough to get Pocket Aces two hands in a row.
Out of curiosity, can someone please tell me the odds on that happening?

For the record, the first hand lost to one caller J 10 spades who hit a straight.
2nd hand managed to hold up vs 4 callers.

Ended up the night going out on the bubble (10th)

I had back to back Aces THREE times. 2002, 2003, 2004. Still got 6 months to hit the four timer.

What about that 5 rebuy in Hull in 2002?

Taling of Hull, did you know that, certainly until 20 or 30 years ago, Hull had the largest Railway Station in Britain, measured by platform space? This was to accomodate the loading of locally caught fish, which was then delivered all over the UK. And Hull City used to have their own little Railway Station, believe it or not.

Very, it seems.

And I would add - no, PLEASE DONT GO - that my first trip to Hull to play a comp was a sort of mistake. I had been told "they have a lot of fish up there", and I jumped to the wrong conclusion.

Oh lordy. By the way did you know that Derby County at their old Baseball ground had their own train station (Baseball Ground Halt) too.

As a lad my uncle would pick me up and take me on the train, rattle in hand and scarf wrapped tightly round my little neck, to see the team in action back in the days of Dave Mackay, Franny Lee, Kevin Hector etc. He stood me on an orange box on the popular side and I swayed with the crowd as Derby county swept to the league championship before queueing back at the Halt for a train back to my Mum's, toasted crumpets and Dr Who,Jon Pertwee style, hiding behind the sofa.

By the way the thought has occurred to me that on the first hand of the WSOP main event, lets assume 7000 runners, 32 pairs of aces (220-1 shot) will be dealt on average and 3 or 4 (88% chance of winning heads up) of those will get cracked assuming they have whittled the pot down to heads up.

A sobering thought.

Title: Re: Odds
Post by: AdamM on June 16, 2005, 10:03:38 AM
although the added presure of it being the first hand of the WSOP final event means most people NOT holding AA will pass to straong raises so theose 3 / 4 cracks probably wont happen

Title: Re: Odds

Which would suggest that at least one player will be dealt KK versus AA on the very first hand.

Please don't let it be me !!

As a matter of fact,

I happen to know someone, who is a regular at Nottingham who was dealt KK versus AA

In the very first hand of the WSOP main event.

did he crack the AA, did he crack to the pressure of the first hand and lay down to al All-in etc!

It was Ian McDonald, 4 or 5 years ago.

He went all-in and lost.

The very first hand, the ultimate poker bummer.

The special railway station or "halt" as TightEnd correctly described it, for Derby County?

It's still there, fact I looked at it yesterday as we passed through on the 10.04 Derby to Pancras down fast.

But it is not used these days. Probably because they moved the Stadium.

Scientists at NASA have developed a gun built specifically to launch dead chickens at the windshields of airliners, military jets and the space shuttle, all traveling at maximum velocity. The idea is to simulate the frequent incidents of collisions with airborne fowl to test the strength of the windshields.

British engineers heard about the gun and were eager to test it on the windshields of their new high speed trains. Arrrangements were made. But when the gun was fired, the engineers stood shocked as the chicken hurtled out of the barrel, crashed into the shatterproof shield, smashed it to smithereens, crashed through the control console, snapped the engineer's backrest in two and embedded itself in the back wall of the cab.

Horrified Brittons sent NASA the disastrous results of the experiment, along with the designs of the windshield, and begged the US scientists for suggestions.

NASA's response was just three words, "Thaw the chicken".

Behave Red Dog - but nice one.

Dave - me a Network Rail employee? Sadly no, my biggest regret in life, I must admit. I shall always regret not working on the Railways. It makes me feel like I have failed. (Cue post from Red-Dog - You have failed Tony...).

Strange you say that, there is actually a machine that fires chickens at rolls royce derby.
I once watched them fire chickens into jet engines to ensure that they could withstand birds being sucked thru them on takeoff.

Well i thought it was amusing at the time................................

OK, we now have a new winner of the most surreal blondepoker thread...

all this reminds me of that summer job I had at Pork Farms in Nottingham..... :-\ :-\ :-\

Ifm's post is actually true, both at Rolls Royce Derby & Hucknall.

No fun being a chicken in Derbyshire or Notts, eh?

Pork Farms? We do NOT wanna hear that one, purlease......

Methinks Hucknall will be closed soon, such a shame the road RR seem to be heading down.

Agree Ian.

I purchased 2,000 shares in RR when they were privatised, what, 20 years ago? Today they are worth, give or take 20p, about the same as I paid for them. I keep waiting for them to go up so I can sell them, but it never happens.

Now you are talking my line of business! The shares are currently 290p having risen from 70p just before this better market started in March 03. In the last few months the shares have risen in a straight line from 250p. I am not allowed to give advice but you may decode the following sentence if you wish:

Out now get can you while.

Spot on Tight End!

The British Airways share price graph aint much different either, I think they sunk to 80p post 9/11, & are about 275p now, probably about what I paid for thrm at Privatisation. Another "if they go up another 20p I'll sell jobbie".....

And, as TightEnd properly points out, it is illegal to give share advice except under very stringent FSA imposed rules, so here's my view on the Party Gaming (owners of Party Poker) impending float....

Bargepole with a dont touch.

LOL
I think i worked that one out but you may need to explain it for the elderly/scottish amongst us :P

I actually believe RR can only go from strength to strength though at the expense of their uk workforce.
The aim is for Derby to be purely for designing purposes, they have already given away a majority of their machining work to Xian, China (not subbed it, they are the customer for much of RR work).

They also have LTA's with all their suppliers that actually force price reductions on them annually (around 7%).
Last year they put ALL their work out for tender and an electronic bidding war ensued over the net.

Please do, it will save me a job. I was going to pen a piece about it - I have quite a strong view on it.

But if you have a professional involvement, I guess you'll need to be careful what you say.

But by default, I now know you dont work for a major league UK investment bank, or any American financial institution. Because neither of them will be involved, they've all shunned it.

Certainly amongst the big investors Rolls Royce is more popular than it has been in a decade...at last the spares business on the installed fleet is coming through, the civil cycle is in their favour and cashflow is improving

For us capitalists, this is of course excellent. For the workforce, more mixed.

I'm a fund manager Tikay. They will be attempting (ho ho ho) to get me to invest my clients funds in their shares

Funnily enough, I have some strong views on many aspects of this float too, but that's for off-line.

As you refer to it above, the sponsors to the float are French and German owned. Nothing wrong with that, but as you imply the whole legailty of the US online gaming industry is a huge isse.

An honourable draw methinks.

No, you are right. Many in my industry let the investing public down. In practice this is marketing hype leading to false investor expectations as much as fund management incompetence (although it is true to say that the average fund manager fails to beat the market even pre-charges)

Thus when in new social company I say I am a traffic warden to avoid embarrassment.
