I do it now and again but I tend to buy them stuff rather than give them money.

Had a min cash tonight at Alea and 3 degens who had £2.50 odd between them asked for some change, I said nope but I will buy them food. So bought them a lump each at the kebab shop across the road and they were fucking delighted hehehe.

As sad as it sounds I actually feel good about myself even though I'm a bit pissed  ;angel;

If I'm not busto I generally will give a quid or summit, people say it could be a con etc but I wouldn't sit in the cold for five minutes for a quid so I don't really care what they do with it.

I'm assuming by degens you mean homeless people lol.

Yeah, homeless guys, and it is normally guys. I never give money but I do often buy food for them  :)

same as mond - if i'm not skint and they seem genuine i'll give them some change.  if i've got no change i'll give 'em a couple of fags.  wouldn't do the 'i'm buying you food instead' thing coz tbh if a couple of drinks is what they want to get them through the night rather than a burger then that's kind of understandable and I'm not going to patronise them by making that call.

Hmmm, I think booze is the only thing I wouldn't buy them tbh but each to their own. They were asking for the money for food anyway, I just wanted to make sure they spent it on what they said really.

Don't blame you mate, I know people have been saying don't know why you bother to tony but when you have a record like he has in the comps how can you not? £660 is a decent night in a cash game and sometimes it feels like less work in those comps lol. The Monday gala one only gets 40-50 runners and is usually between £600-£800 ftw

not quite that cut and dried though is it?  I could bang on for ages on this subject. but, very first and foremost, most people don't like being in the position of having to ask for help (be it from the state or elsewhere) and find it very uncomfortable and humiliating to do so.  the benefits system may be seen as 'uber soft' by many looking outside in, but the reality is there are a whole heap of hoops to jump through to get what you may be entitled to, and each time you have to do it you have to swallow a lot of pride.  Those living on the street will all have their own stories, of course, but the reality is that getting the help needed to avoid that kind of situation can actually be very difficult for a lot of people to do, especially if they don't have friends and family around them to help with the seemingly simplest of things.

Best story Iv ever heard was Pleno1s. He walked into a Mcdonalds in the morning, pissing it down outside. 4 Tramps were sat trying to get warm out of the rain, the manager told them that theyd have to leave. Pads buys them all a breakfast and a coffee and smiles politely at the manager. Class act!

well quite - it's not the context we're used to but I don't see anything surprising in it's usage here.

Loads of stories about people begging outside tube stations, then getting in the Jag and driving off after the rush hour.  I could never give money in that kind of situation.  However, if someone is already dossed down for the night in a doorway or something and clearly there for the night, I'm happy to throw in some change.  There still are options for people in this situation (e.g. Mungos) but some choose not to, for whatever reason.

Years ago, I came out of BK with a takeaway for the train journey home, last train and obv pissed.  Whatever I ordered was £9.xx and so I walked out of there with a bag full of grub and change from a tenner.  "spare me some change guv so I can eat?"  Realising that I wasn't even hungry, I just gave him the bag of grub.  One look on his face instantly told me that he'd far rather have had the change than the food.
