Title: 3 bet pot line check please.
Post by: rbc_mike on February 14, 2012, 05:39:36 AM
50p/£1 game at Gala, playing pretty loose and the standard is relatively bad.
Effective stacks are about £200.
Straddle is on.
Villain in question is 'rivertony', a gd reg.

Tony opens to £6 in MP - I imagine he's doing this very wide, and has been very active this session.
Folds to Hero's BB.  I three bet  Ac Tc to £20.  I don't want to get run over, plus I think he's gonna call wide, so the three bet is more for value than anything else.
Tony calls.

Pot 42.
Flop:  Td 9h 2s

Hero bets 27. Tony calls. Seems a fairly standard spot for value, feel I'm gonna get floated a bunch on such a dry board versus his perceptions of my range.

Pot: 96.
Tony has 163 left.
Turn:  7c

Hero bets 44. Tony shoves. Hero calls.
I bet small to induce, as I figure he's gonna shove tonnes of 'scare' cards like straight completing cards, any 9, may turn 88 into a bluff but unlikely, could be shoving worse ten's, a9 etc
I called fairly quickly given that I thought he would spaz out here quite alot, and our hand could look like a weak double barrel. Should I be right in thinking my hand is good the majority of the time here?

Thoughts on sizing, thought processes etc all welcomed and encouraged!

Pre is good/standard vs this villain. Perfect sizing.

Flop obv standard.

Turn, don't really like the small sizing. Unless he's totally floated you, he's always got something that's calling you on the turn. Almost all of his range on the flop has no picked up extra equity ott - All his pairs on the flop have now picked up straights draws or he has 78 which has improved to a pair. So I don't think you need to bet small to induce. Bet big for value, setting up a river shove. Bet £59 then shove most rivers for £104. When he shoves the turn you're probably beat but you can't really fold.

we're not really setting up a river shove though. we need to get 180 in by the river

22 (pot = 62 going to turn)
45 (pot = 150ish going to river
113

yeh you can still shove the river by betting 45, but you miss out on value ott imo, he's still calling 60.

I really don't hate the £44/call line at all, but I lean to Alex's thoughts that we miss out on  a bit of value by not betting the turn a little bigger. Also once we bet bigger OTT calling the shove off is completely mandatory, whereas once you bet £44 I think you're actually making a small mistake calling the turn all-in. I really don't see anyone good spazzing out here when he has a LOT of pairs in his range OTT - it's feesible he's bluffing with some of them ofc. prolly J9 and 96 are the hand's he'll want to bluff most often.

Betting £65 OTT leave you needing 25% not 30% equity to drop the chips in and I reckon that might make a small amount of difference, either way it really sucks when he jams the turn.

With stack sizes and board texture i quite like c/r the flop, not a nightmare if flop gets checked through but u freeze out his good equity with hands like KQ/QJ that will bet the flop alot.

Mike might say he was playing pretty loose this isn't the case, only loose thing he did was straddle so I feel calling pre with any 2 cards to make plays v a tight player in position I'd outplay him a high percentage of the time! As it happens I floated flop to make plays on turn but turned my gutshot with 86, run good much?

Mike has AK, AQ and AJ hands so often and with my flat on flop he could get me credit for sets and 910 which means he can now maybe fold JJ too!

so u think he has a tight range and you want to get him to fold top pair+ on the turn? dont you think he'll play his hand pretty face up, i.e not fold top pair and not keep betting without a pair.

Well he's fair from an idiot so he's capable of having good hands and a tons of bad hands despite his tight image, he very capable of firing 2 bullets with ace high hands due to him knowing I'm gonna float a bunch! He also capable of making laydowns too! Obv if I think he's hand is super strong I just fold pre but he's built up his image to use it and I thought this was a great spot for him so I decided I was gonna try and outplay him, when I call pre with 86 I can hardly fold flops like 1092 as I might as well just fold pre if gonna fold these flops so for me floating/raising flop is better! Decided on the float and turned gin, rest is history! Although brick turn and he's gonna win a nice pot as I'm raising turn alot!

yeh, i understand your logic, I still think its a clear fold pre for you though. if you think he's capable of 2 barrelling ace high hands why did you shove turn? call and let him hit top pair/keep betting/ generally with Ax here if you bet turn you should bet river. one and gone or 3 legoooooo.

Agreed pre is pretty bad, flop is pretty standard and turn is dependant on weather I feel he's does have A high hands or very good hands like JJ+! Went he bet turn I think he's hand now leans towards a value hand rather than a A high hence the Allin but maybe I just say that cos he called LOL

In OP, I meant the game itself was playing pretty loose. I was rocking it up as per trying to make pairs.

Agree with comments that bet sizing could be bigger on turn, my thought process was that I wanted to give Tony what appeared to be a strong amount of f.e. on the turn. Given that he thinks that I can make laydowns, he is gonna raise/jam turn with a wide range if he thinks I'm bet folding jj/qq here (would be pretty bad imo to bet/fold with pot/stack sizes).  Just wanted to check I'm not being results based.

Enjoyed the game last night was fun, hope you got out of it on the night

Was good to meet you! I sure got out of the hole [ ].  I'll just bink the 150 at DTD this wknd so it's not biggy :)

Surely this makes us ridic exploitable?

Surely bet>>>check>>>>c-r? I don't think I'm ever c-r this board having raised the straddle pre, I'm literally just betting 100% of my hands for value/continuation betting on such a dry board. If I think he's gonna float me wide, I lose out on value when he folds hands he would float with.

100% bet flop, bet slightly bigger on turn, other than that u played the hand perfect! Sigh turn card for you! I'm sure we will battle again and you can get some revenge  ;)

Don't think Tony "I don't fold to 3bs" Phillips would ever consider passing at any point during this hand. Ul mike
