My biggest disappointment was when I was about 11. Grew up in quite a religious family, so knew nothing, and I mean *nothing* back then (I remember quizzing my mum on why nuns weren't getting pregnant that often).
Went into school on Valentine's day and had a blank card ready for my crush (Helen). Didn't know what to write so I asked for help from Tony, who was a bit of a bully but was kind enough to help me out. I penned the words as he dictated
'Helen, my love.
Roses are red
Soil is brown
When I'm with you
my knickers are down'

I had absolutely no idea of what this really meant, but it rhymed, and included 'roses', so I sealed up the envelope and gave it to her.

She showed the teacher. The teacher showed her mum. And then my mum came too, very red-faced. Pretty stunned probably that her angelic only-son had just been unmasked as Pornographer Laureate. She took me straight home. I remember sobbing all the way back, heart-broken and confused.
