Title: laptops in cardrooms
Post by: dylanb on March 12, 2012, 12:49:29 AM
I'm new to all this but was wondering what peoples thought were on laptops in cardrooms especially on cash games. At my local club there always seem to be people on laptops not concentrating on the action but on whats happening on their laptops. Its not so much the people that watch films etc its the people that are playing tornies on line especially on Sunday's!!

Be interested to know peoples thoughts

I've had this issue with different people and I think you should be allowed your laptops in cardrooms, because if they continue to ban them, then why are ipads allowed too?

I like a grind at cash sometimes and be nice to be able to take your laptop in somewhere and play a satty at the same time. Ideal for when attempting for DTD biggies.

There was a discussion about this which starts about here:

Lots arguing for and against the use of laptops, tablets, phones at the table.

My thoughts are that they can be used inbetween hands, but as soon as you're in a hand (i.e. have cards) you shouldn't be using any communication device so that the game isn't interrupted and any issues relating to potential cheating are avoided.

Gets annoying when they slow things up - had a guy to my right on Saturday who was trying to fix up a date with French Girl - every hand he had to be told to get his Ante in and that the action was on him - did manage to get someone to call off against him when he was super strong so maybe it was part of his plan

At DtD you can play on your laptop on their site while you are at the tables, is that still the case?

I played a tournament recently when one old school pro who I won't name watched sky sports news for several hours on his phone without headphones at the table. At one point he wandered off for about ten minutes leaving it playing. Marvellous.

Yep - you can.

But to try and look cool, it might be better to get an iPad. I think that is going to be my next buy at some point next month.

The wifi connection is awful and you will be disconnected for long spells especially if it is particually busy.

I would play with my own dongle/aircard if I did that rather than using the clubs connection...

Playing at G last night and planned on also playing the APAT League game.
As I searched the lobby for it on Stars the Cardroom Manager came over and informed me that he had received an email from HO saying that players in tournaments weren't allowed to also play online. Regardless of site.

I have never been keen on these devices at the poker table. You are not allowed use your phone at the table so why are you allowed other electronic devices?

I played the 100k at DTD on Saturday and my table looked like PC world, at 1 point 7 of the 9 players had head phones in listing to rubbish, I say rubbish because every couple of minutes they start playing with their machines. If this was not slowing the game down enough 3 players also had i pad’s on the go.

I feel these machines should be covered by the same rule as phones. You want to use it leave the table. Turn your music on stick it your pocket and leave it alone. You are a grown up not a child playing with a new toy.

This would at least make players get their play list right.  ;tk;

I have no real issue with people using any equipment like ipad, headphones etc, as long as they pay attention, and to be fair i'd say the majority are paying attention even it seems like the opposite.

It gets so tedious though when in every hand, the same villains who are listening to their music miss what is happening totally, sometimes they'll  try and call the big blind when they missed the mid position raise/reraise, then they sit their looking confused and saying 'what just happened/how much is it, is it on me' etc, ultimately slowing the action down, and we all know how slow live poker action is at the best of times.

Or worse still if the dealer keeps having to wave in their face when its their turn and they are just staring down at their ipad/phone etc with music on too loud and seemingly not too bothered with keeping the game flowing. Then just to annoy me even more they tank for ages and muck! :)
