Title: Pub poker Post by: superwomble on March 12, 2012, 02:34:53 PM I play in a pub game every other week and was wondering if anyone had any tips to combat the frankly mind-boggling play I see there. The game is between 6-9 players NLHE, we have starting stacks of 2500 and 9 minute blinds, which start at 25/50. No antes at all.
There are a few guys who know what they're doing, and a few who have very little idea. With some of them it is literally any two cards. I was beaten a couple of weeks ago by 42o calling my shove - the same player had previously called flop, turn and river bets with nothing - nothing so bad that he wouldn't even have beaten a stone-cold bluff. Unfortunately, as these players know so little they are very hard to read. A guy last time was acting very strong but lost on the river when his top pair was beaten by an obvious flush. He thought he had the nuts or close to it though. Obvious flushes and straights are often missed so can't represent them. My thinking has been that when players are this loose and unpredictable the best plan is to tighten up and hope to stack them with monsters, but with the blinds going up so quickly this isn't working well. Any tips? Title: Re: Pub poker Post by: BulldozerD on March 12, 2012, 02:37:57 PM Wait for a good hand before wagering all your chips

Don't even bother thinking of any kind of strategy and just enjoy it Title: Re: Pub poker Post by: Girgy85 on March 12, 2012, 03:07:44 PM Get smashed and play the 4 2o

Title: Re: Pub poker Post by: AdamM on March 12, 2012, 08:10:17 PM it's impossible to "beat the game".
the faster the clock and te shallower the stack, the more luck involved. I play in a weekly pub game for fun. it's £3 each, £1 of which is bounty and it's mental. I win about 1 in 8 against players who think a Super 50 is nose bleed. have a couple of pints and don't think about winning or losing. At DTD I'm a relatively tight and patient player. at the pub game I play about 80% of hands. I get to play LAG for a change :) Title: Re: Pub poker Post by: dllewellyn on March 12, 2012, 11:50:50 PM

Title: Re: Pub poker Post by: BorntoBubble on March 13, 2012, 01:41:39 AM In my local pub game i used to play very simple also play on peoples egos espically when theve been drinking! Bet massive with the nuts and then tell them not to let you bluff them these simple moves seem to get calls! Just try and extract max value but no need to bluff in these games these pubs players always want to give you their chips so let them do this!
Title: Re: Pub poker Post by: Ironside on March 13, 2012, 09:10:05 AM i run the poker in my local pub, i even changed the structure to make it a better game, but its still just a turbo game. too many players sit there treating it like the wsop and go off on one when they find there 3bb stack and AA getting beat by T7o.
pub poker is a bit of fun and very little skill involved Title: Re: Pub poker Post by: mronetime on March 13, 2012, 10:30:20 AM Do not bluff has got to be the first rule of pub poker!!
Plus just open shove big pairs and hope they hold up Title: Re: Pub poker Post by: Cf on March 13, 2012, 10:38:01 AM Turn up in a hoodie and sunglasses. Do not speak at all. Tank for 2 minutes over every decision. This will earn you respect.

Title: Re: Pub poker Post by: Waz1892 on May 14, 2012, 11:57:09 PM Play in the redtooth pub league for the last 2 "seasons". They get around 15-18 players at my local with top 2 in league after 12weeks go through 13th week is a playoff for places 3-10 for another place in the regionals.
I missed out on auto qualify last season after the 3rd and 4th place just folded to higher points, which should have made me fold my hands to ensure i qualified, but i couldn't fold my hands and subquently lost the position The resulting playoff was then moved to another time, the txt everyone got, i got on an old phone, so missed out!!! Week 2 of 12 tonight and I've had enough. Blinds 500/1000 I'm on around 10.5k which is 2nd in chips, and players A,B and C have 500, 800 and 2300 between them roughly with a couple of others around 4 or 5k. everyone kept folding to climb the ladder of points, which just did my head in playing like that so i didnt look for 3 hands in a row...no-one noticed, I even got a walk! shoved everyhand just to go out as id had enough and ended up a10 vs j10 and out to a Jack. Is is just my pub or redtooth, or is it all like this? Didnt seem as bad last season, but last 2 weeks of end league and this week tipped me over to quit. Its just fun i know, pint and poker on a Monday, but to fold half-a-blind for 30more points, i cant be doing with it despite the fun. Title: Re: Pub poker Post by: fatboyslow on May 16, 2012, 06:31:38 PM IMHO pub poker can be very much hit and miss skill wise and the variance is MASSIVE as a result.
I've played about 25% of the games in my local ( Harrogate ) pub poker league this year and seen all standards ... all types of players turn up, from WSOP wannabees through to them who think facebook poker is like real life. I try to treat it as a night out which may provide a small profit at the end but it has to be entertainment first and foremost Most important I try to accept the 1 card river suck outs with grace, even when the drunk dances round the table shouting how he knew he had me beat ;frustrated; after all if I was really half decent I wouldn't be playing pub poker , I'd be cleaning up every night at DTD ( in my dreams ) Title: Re: Pub poker Post by: Ironside on May 17, 2012, 03:39:24 AM i TD the redtooth game in the pub i reguarly go i have altered there structure to allow more play (pubs open till 1 am so plenty of time)
players are terrible though people limping from 6 big blind stacks calling for 2/3 of there stacks etc etc but the game isnt that bad short handed is so unreal with no raises unless people have AQ+ or TT+ and 3 bets are unheard of Title: Re: Pub poker Post by: david3103 on May 17, 2012, 06:39:32 AM i TD the redtooth game in the pub i reguarly go i have altered there structure to allow more play (pubs open till 1 am so plenty of time) players are terrible though people limping from 6 big blind stacks calling for 2/3 of there stacks etc etc but the game isnt that bad short handed is so unreal with no raises unless people have AQ+ or TT+ and 3 bets are unheard of Sounds like our local Casinos, which are both full of people who have 'moved up' from pub games |
