Title: Potential virus/bug?
Post by: cambridgealex on March 15, 2012, 01:22:32 PM
(http://i1210.photobucket.com/albums/cc416/cambridgealex/bug.png)

Lots of random words are now appearing as hyperlinks, obv I haven't clicked on any yet, but when I hover the mouse over them, it's this sort of thing.

I stupidly tried to download a TV series from thepiratebay yesterday and it downloaded two programs, one called Babylon something, and I can't remember what the other one was called cos I snap uninstalled it. The Babylon thing didn't uninstall right away but I managed to get rid of it today. I think it may've been a virus or some sort of bug.

Looks like a browser "helper" add on has been installed.

Go here and download Malwarebytes anti malware:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free

Click the Download Now

Which will take you to another page

Click the Download Now again

Run the mbam--setup-1.60.1.1000.exe and let it install.

The let the program update itself and run a full scan.

Hopefully it should remove the offending add on.

You might be best advised to do a system restore and roll back to before you downloaded those files.

That way you can be sure they're not installed. You won't lose any files you've downloaded recently on your computer doing this.

didn't work. it said "windows was unable to do a system restore". Or words to that effect.

Quality virus, blocks restore. Will probably try to block scanner, and the download thereof. If you can, try the aforementioned malwarebytes, also AVIRA, SUPERANTISPYWARE. If fail, try downloading from phone, and transferring on a cable to PC. Try running the scanners when PC is in safe mode.
After that, retry Restore. Virus should be gone any way.

Alex, did you boot up in safe mode and then attempt the system restore?

no?

You have to close down and then boot up in safe mode, and then the virus won't stop the system restore from running.

Before the windows splash screen comes up you have to hit F8.
