Would be really handy and I think very popular. It's a huge success on facebook and tons of other sites use it. LOADS of posts I just wanna 'like' it, and not bother replying with an actual message.

I would prefer "Like" to that habit where people just take the easy option, & quote the Post above, which, personally, I dislike. The worst example of that was when one of our Members died, & someone simply (& correctly) posted "RIP" but several people just quoted that! It was grossly offensive, but they intended no harm, they were just following forum protocol without engaging brain. Still, if someone died, & we had a "LIKE" button, I shudder to think of the consequences......

"+1" is the same as the quote thing, I guess.

I think it is good to be able to show agreement, or approval, quickly & easily, but in an ideal world, I'd like to see each Post make a useful contribution, rather than just ticking a box.

I think as a forum, we should be encouraging more conversation not less. They tried this briefly on 2+2 and people didn't "like" it.

Think this should be met halfway with 'reps', where you can appraise a post if you feel like it but would need to make a comment about why you have done so either positively or negatively. Works well on the cpfc.org forum, the biggest UK football forum, obv.

they also have this feature on the bodybuilding forum i post on, it doesn't really stop people posting or commenting further on posts that they've liked it's just that the amount of likes someone has got apppears just below their post count the ratio to which is a good indiacator of how good a contributator that person is to the forum and how good their posts are, fyi pretty much everyone on that forum hates facebook so i don't think the likes feature is unique to facebook or a facebook type site

the reps system works very well on ukm too, something quite important actually when people are regularly giving advice on AAS

I have never really posted on a forum with a rep system, but my initial thought is that it seems potentially more trouble than it is worth. Lets face it there is plenty of egos in the poker world (probably less on blonde than elsewhere tbf) and I can only see it becoming a point of conflict when someones ego gets bent out of shape because someone get a rep for something and they didn't etc...

Why do we need little stickers on our profiles saying how much everyone likes us?

I decide how much I like people's posts and how much they contribute by reading what they write and deciding.

Are we going to have a little league table of 'best posters'? Are people going to start sending PMs to each other 'you like me and then I'll like you back'?

Yeah - there are enough prickly fkers round here as it is.

maybe it doesn't translate to other formats so well whereas in the bodybuilding community it's essential to know that someone you're taking advice from on stuff like AAS knows what they're talking about, the reps and likes system is a good indicator for that, the reps and likes on that forum dont really make anyone feel that good or special about themselfs, more a guide for other users when taking advice from them that they know what they're talking about.

I can see that if someone is giving some kind of medical advice then it's obviously important that a load of people on the internet give you a thumbs up to indicate you know what you're talking about but I can't see that applying here.

I think it's ok in that context, but in general, it is only of use to the very young, or very insecure..... which means I will only get half of the benefit.

there should be a benefit, not that much though as people that have something like 10,000 posts are probably long term respected members anyway so would naturally have a lot of likes and reps, i don't think it would hurt though.

With regards to reps for staking, I think it'd have to be reps purely for staking wouldn't it?  Take the Solaris incident, I guess he'd have quite a good rep before people gave him cash (idiots!)  You're probably close to running a similar scheme to one of the staking forums then with staker points and stakee points.

The plan is to make the software more amenable to added bells & whistles, such as a much enhanced Live Updating software & suchlike. It's all goot.

A simpler system would be to tag people who you've given money to Graham, then the rest of us can avoid them... ;)

It could be like Ebay where the stakers get to rate the stakee in regards to did they get the cash out ok, was the stakee true to everything he posted etc. It might raise the level of transparency, then again it might just stop some of the staking too.

I think this kind of system works well where the forum is largely comprised of people asking questions and others answering them.

I've seen programming forums where they do something like that and it's good to know who has been genuinely helpful in the past.

But I don't see how it'd work for a more community based forum where we just talk rubbish most of the time - people with the highest reps would almost certainly just be the people who posted the most.

IMO the problem with automating the system we use to assess each other's trustworthiness is it could lead people to stop paying attention. Scammers only need to fool a minority to have an incentive, with the current system when a staking thread goes up you already know that's only 1 side of the story and everyone has to do a little digging and use their judgement to decide whether their money will be safe, whereas I think people being 'highly-rated' would lull some buyers into a false sense of security. It's like how they took the pedestrian crossings out on Edgware Rd near the Vic and accidents actually went down, because it forces people to pay attention. This isn't ebay, the poker universe is small enough that we can remember the names of the people who can't be trusted, and besides, a rating system wouldn't have prevented the biggest scam in the forum's history, so leave it as it is imo.

Also how would the system work so as that 1 scam thread can undo 1000 'highly rated' posts, but 1 legitimate dispute or person with a grudge can't?

edit: am referring to the idea of 'reps' as a staking aid. the like button idea seems to me to be totally superfluous, you can just +1 or 'this' or even just quote a post and it's the same thing
