Title: Syndicate required for Buying a decent Greyhound!! (interest thread)
Post by: Eso Kral on March 29, 2012, 02:58:13 PM
Was thinking about this the other day before I went away and then saw Tikay post in his degen thread about a buying a low priced grader but after a text convo with Dubai we feel it is better to go for a better class of hound!!

So this is an interest thread at this stage to see how many of the degens would be up for putting up between £300 - £500 dependant on numbers to raise circa £10k which will purchase (prices approx)

£8000  The "Dag"

£2000 first yrs fees etc

Obv most of the fun and enjoyment is going to come from punting and from seeing Shallows interviews on Skysports and therefore buying a hopefully decent open racer that travels around the circuit means Blondes from around the country will get chance to see the flying machine in action.

We have an ideal trainer in mind who likes poker and is in the top 3 in the country (not pokerz) so we should be in good hands.

Dependant on the amount of interest we may have to scale down the plans and go for a slightly lower open grade dog and maybe turn it to a hurdler therefore always being on Sky but lets "shoot for the stars"

Please post itt if you would be interested in being in the syndicate and we can go from there!

Excellente although not sure Ronnie running around the track is going to win us any future betting discs.

BTW I have a present from Slovakia for you Bopkin and Evil to smash in one night.
You at DTD for the £150 or Ukipt even for a beer?

In, but I thought McBag no longer held a license.

I also think that you need to spend at least £10K for a puppy that has a chance of being really decent.

May i suggest that when the finance is sorted you drop Taximan a line as he may be able to help in sourcing a dog from the Phillipines - chances are that if it has survived any time at all out there without ending up on a Satay skewer then it is a bit rapid.

I know it's mostly for fun and giggles but betting coups aside, what are the prospects of actually making money on a £10k dog from prize money, stud fees, sell on value, etc?

wow what a great write up. Ive met keith allsopp a few times, hes a great bloke and a very shrewd operator, and doesnt have many dogs. They are all open racers though. getting on isnt really the problem, its just keeping the info tight so you can just place SP bets.

if you buy a 10k dog what would it have to do to break even in terms of wins etc?

buying a 10k dog i reckon gotta be 8/1 to break even in prize money, punting it when its ready is the key to breaking even, we need a trainer who isnt gonna tell other owners in the kennel, unless of course we are getting good info from the trainer

If the syndicate was willing to spend 10k imo you's should buy two well bred dog saplings at maybe a year old as they would more than likely be untried and it would only be a possible 6 month wait until they hit the tracks(all depending on the trainer)

Source some info on the top brood bitches atm and go for one from that line, would be costly obv but at least you will have a chance of a good one and as a syndicate im sure most would be looking the dog to be running in major comp's.

I been involved in greyhounds all my life and buying well bred pups always gives you that much more excitement as you always dream that they can become that Derby dog we all are searching for, buying an all age dog that is exposed is just no fun.

Anyways GL in whatever you's decide.

do you think you can buy a top dog with chances to hit the top levels at an older age?

Some good advice given itt!

Dubai I know has owned a good quality dog before and I had a few at one time but mainly graders, I think if we see how many peeps are interested first then can put the finer details in place and go from there.

Im just dubious about dogs that get sold at 12months, makes financial sense for any good rearer to keep them for extra few months, trial them and charge double. Which is why i worry when dogs are sold for middlish sums (3-6k) at 12 months

Plus the wait for them to get to track seems so long in my experience

Put me down for a £200, maybe be in for a £500 nearer the off time.

This is a good point Dubai and obviously there are alot of cowboys who have the schooled the cr@p out of a pup from say 10 months and then pretended they have only been out of the boxes a few times at 12 months and get the buyer fooled. These people exsist everywhere i guess.

There are some top class irish breeders who basically just rear pups and sell them at sapling age. Dessie Loughrey and the Dunphys to name a couple.

If you's have the right contact and wanted a good young dog for now, i'm sure with 10k you's could pick up something very good.

For sure, we got a good one for 6k at 12 months, but have had the other end of the stick and had an average one at similar age for same price, and had no luck with pups with good breeding for decent money at young age, 1 didnt make racetrack for example and 2 litter brothers were dqd for fighting! Funny old game.

Just want one with early pace- makes gambling so much easier
