Title: WSOP/Las Vegas advice Post by: Magic817 on May 03, 2012, 11:56:17 PM Hi all,
This is my first post on the forum and I just want a bit of advice. I have managed to get one of the skypoker WSOP main event packages. I have played profitably on pokerstars for the last few years but have little live experience. I am going to play a few live tournaments between now and then but in Vegas do you think I am better to play to play the $1k event (WSOP event no. 59) before the main event or say some deepstacks at the venetian? Thanks Matt Title: Re: WSOP/Las Vegas advice Post by: claypole on May 04, 2012, 12:57:58 AM Deepstack at the Venetian AINEC - you can play a couple, 3 for $1200 - get more experience handling chips and of the live environment and the structure is much more akin to the main event at the Rio. The $1ks at the Rio are fun and soft, but you start with 3,000 chips at 25/25 so they cut up pretty quickly.
You may even be better investing some of your money in the DTD WSOP Warm Up weekend over the June Bank Holiday (no need to pay me Rob / Tighty) as you can have a proper practise with the same structure. Title: Re: WSOP/Las Vegas advice Post by: smashedagain on May 04, 2012, 09:41:54 AM Yeah play Dtd. You are gonna be in for a culture shock at the level of ability in live poker compared to online.
You will have a ball over there with Tikay. Gl Title: Re: WSOP/Las Vegas advice Post by: TightEnd on May 04, 2012, 09:47:49 AM Welcome to blonde, good luck
As much deepstacked live practice as money allows before the Main Event I reckon DTD's Warm Up Weekend would do that (satellite in, see http://www.dusktilldawnpokerclub.com/satellites/wsop-warm-up-weekend) http://blondepoker.com/forum/index.php?topic=57552.0 Venetian Deepstacks would do that Title: Re: WSOP/Las Vegas advice Post by: tikay on May 04, 2012, 09:55:11 AM Morning Matt - so pleased for you!
As to some Live experience, I STRONGLY recommend a visit to DTD. It's as close as any Venue in the UK to "proper" cardrooms in Vegas, & a great place to play. I'll be there this weekend, if you can manage that (a 30,000 chip £500 jobbie), & so will fellow Vegas winner JAKALLY I believe, & a few others besides. If you bump into JAKALLY, you'll find him extremely knowledgeable, & most helpful, too, though he is quite old. TommyD won a £10,000 Vegas package last night, too - see..... http://blondepoker.com/forum/index.php?topic=57651.0 ...so he'll probably be on the same flight (Gatwick-Vegas, 4th July) as you & most of the other Vegas qualifiers, & Mother & I will meet you all at McCarron Airport. Another blonde with a Vegas package is Marc Wright, aka "railtard", who I believe has a bit of a tidy game. Title: Re: WSOP/Las Vegas advice Post by: Jon MW on May 04, 2012, 10:48:52 AM I think you should play at the Venetian just because it's a really nice place to play - and they give you nice food.
The other arguments for doing so also work though :) Title: Re: WSOP/Las Vegas advice Post by: tonytats on May 04, 2012, 11:06:03 AM Well done ,before going to Vegas you really should get as much live experience as you can ,otherwise it will quickly become apparent to others at the table ,and it's a pretty tough place for anyone in that situation
Either way I'm sure you will love it and have a good time ,there so much other stuff to do in Vegas ,enjoy it buddy Title: Re: WSOP/Las Vegas advice Post by: tonytats on May 04, 2012, 11:12:23 AM Any comp at Caesars is good too for experience too as the buyins are not as expensive as the Venetian ,and the standard is pretty good too,
Plus you have the added benefit of the pussy cat dolls pit just outside the poker room ! Title: Re: WSOP/Las Vegas advice Post by: tikay on May 04, 2012, 11:41:36 AM When we do the Vegas thing each year, for the less experienced players, I always take them to Caesars on the first night, & we mess around in a little $140 or $200 thing, just to catch the feel & mood. It's usually a choice between a "Welcome Dinner", or I take them to Caesars for some fun poker, most prefer the latter, though of course the "Big Boys" do their own thing. Title: Re: WSOP/Las Vegas advice Post by: Doobs on May 04, 2012, 11:58:19 AM Can I put a vote in for event 59. Having not many chips concentrates the mind. Should stop the "splashing about" that is so tempting when you have 30k chips. Never played a Venetian deep stack or a DTD one but the WSOPstructure when you make day 2 is very good. Good luck with whatever you decide

Title: Re: WSOP/Las Vegas advice Post by: Magic817 on May 04, 2012, 05:55:10 PM Thanks a lot for all of the advice, is really appreciated. Quite a few people have said about the DTD WSOP warm up and I am going to make every effort to go there. I have heard many good things about DTD and am looking to playing there so if I cant make the warm up weekend I will head down there another weekend. I am also planning on playing a few other live tournaments over the coming months which will probably be the sky poker tour at Blackpool and a few games at Luton as it not too far from me. The number of games and buy ins will probably depend on how SCOOP goes for me though.
Based on your comments, a couple of deepstack tournaments seems better value than the WSOP event (Yes Tikay it is the 3k starting stack) especially as I prefer tournaments with deeper stacks so I think I will go for that. I heard Marc was going and I have followed some of his play, Tikay - he seems nearly as aggressive as you on the tables! Tikay - Yeah I did see Tommy had won a package on the Skypoker forum, seems like we have a good bunch going over there. Interesting who gets the last couple of packages. After a very nervy start I got up to a decent stack of 100k but then busted with a couple of levels to go. Was a good and very useful pre vegas experience.
