Title: Heads-up Match - on the RADIO.....! Post by: tikay on January 12, 2006, 10:51:41 PM You may have seen the thread which begins "DET something or the other", or even the later, "Derby Evening Telegraph" thread. The local rag published an interview & pics &, well, it's a pretty small place, Ilkeston, even Derby, so it all went off adfterwards, with phone messages & PM's & stuff. Amongst these was one from BBC Radio Derby, the local Radio Station. "Can you pop in & do a radio interview with us please". No prob, I go to their studio this afternoon, meet a lovely guy, his name was, I forget his first name. Actually, now I think about it, I forget his second name too, but it was somebody somebody. Nice guy though. He asked me to bring a pack of cards, which puzzled me, but you know me, anything for a quiet life, so I did. We go into the studio & do about 10 minutes on the Poker Scene & I guess they will edit it, & it will find it's way on air tomorrow at some stage. It's generally larging up poker, so it's a good thing. We finish, then the guy says "right, lets have heads-up match, we will record that too, & play it tomorrow". A heads-Up Poker match. On radio? I've heard of Darts on the radio, but heads-up poker.....? Let's not argue, I think, & get the cards out. And the pair of us sit in front of the microphone. I mean, this is bizarre. Guy says "ok, shuffle the cards"... WHAT? "But they can't see us shuffle" I protest. "Don't worry, they wll HEAR you shuffle. Wow, exciting stuff, eh? Listen to tikay shuffle. I shuffle, & then he asksd me to deal the 2 hands. "Nice and snappy, so the mike picks it up". I deal us each a hand, then explain how the betting words. We both decide to take a flop. I mean, you can hardly PASS on Radio, now can you? I deal this flop..... Ad Aspades 9d He goes "can I bet?" I look at my cards - I got Ts 8s. "well", I say in schoolmastrerly fashion, "I would not advise it, I've got an Ace", I lied. Well I mean, nobody can SEE I'm cheating, now can they? "I don't care, I want to bet 500" he says. What? WHAT? "Look, I've just told you, I've got an A, so I have trips, I'm massive". He bets. "Call" I say, justifying it with "careful now, I have trip Aces. That's a very good hand". The turn is...... 4d "BET again" he says. "But, look mate, I am way ahead with my three Aces, you sure you wanna bet?" "Yup". "OK, I call" I say, mockingly. River comes 2d "I bet" he again says. All this is being recorded, mind..... "OK, I Re-Raise you all-in" I assert. "Call" he says quick as a flash. WTF? I turn over my trip aces - well, correction, Ts 8s He turns over, wait for it..... 6c 3d So he's rivered his 4 flush. Please, PLEASE, don't let Flushy, or Kiv get hold of this. First man to lose a heads-up match on Radio, AND I cheated. I'ts just too much some days. I'm a broken man. Title: Re: Heads-up Match - on the RADIO.....! Post by: Indestructable on January 12, 2006, 10:58:35 PM We want the recording. Petition starts here..............

Is this a wind up, Tony??? If it isn't, then it is the funniest thing I have read in years. :D :D :D Title: Re: Heads-up Match - on the RADIO.....! Post by: tikay on January 12, 2006, 11:13:41 PM Tikay playing Poker on Radio Derby with a presenter named somebody somebody???? Is this a wind up, Tony??? If it isn't, then it is the funniest thing I have read in years. :D :D :D Every word is true Mike, happened at 4.30 this afternoon. But his real name was something something, not somebody somebody, if you get my drift. Been a horrendous day. Hairdrerssers. (Roots, don't you know, I'm off cruising next week, goota look my best). 2 hours with the taxman. Lose a Heads-Up Match on Radio, to a guy who's never played before. Things can only get better. Title: Re: Heads-up Match - on the RADIO.....! Post by: Graham C on January 12, 2006, 11:17:16 PM his first name was the same as his surname?
Title: Re: Heads-up Match - on the RADIO.....! Post by: tikay on January 12, 2006, 11:18:52 PM NOOOO. I forgot his first name. And I forgot his second name. But I'm sure he had one of each. Title: Re: Heads-up Match - on the RADIO.....! Post by: langboy on January 12, 2006, 11:24:08 PM Tikay,
Don't tell me you are on the L**brokes cruise? Jeez. While some of us are battling through 2 feet of snow and -14 degree temperatures, others are swanning off to the Caribbean!! Have a great time, mate. I think you have earned it. 8) Title: Re: Heads-up Match - on the RADIO.....! Post by: tikay on January 12, 2006, 11:27:31 PM It's not a holiday Mike - I'm WORKING. Gotta write 250 words, every other day. Not decided which word yet. Title: Re: Heads-up Match - on the RADIO.....! Post by: langboy on January 12, 2006, 11:34:21 PM My oh my Tony,
You are on form tonight. :D Mind you don't get wrist ache.......... ooops, that sounds terrible..... I mean from the writing of course. Please give my best to young Mr Fox while you are on that great big boat in the sunshine. Stu tells me he is taking his dear old Mum on the cruise. How bloomin nice is that? Title: Re: Heads-up Match - on the RADIO.....! Post by: tikay on January 12, 2006, 11:48:44 PM How old is she?....... Title: Re: Heads-up Match - on the RADIO.....! Post by: Cupcake on January 12, 2006, 11:52:19 PM now that's funny............where's derby?
Cupcake. Title: Re: Heads-up Match - on the RADIO.....! Post by: tikay on January 12, 2006, 11:54:19 PM Oh, nearly forgot. How about this for nice guys in Poker. I am on the Cruise, but was not planning to play the Main Event, it's $6,500 I think, way out of my league. But when Foxy heard I was not playing, he offered to buy a big % of me, and within minutes, by chance, so did Thewy & ActionJack. How nice is THAT? Still not sure I shall play it, but I really am seriously thinking about it now. The 3 of them, between them, have offered to buy 40% of me! I sent a note to Thewy to thank him, he replied "dry your eyes old man, stop faffing about, & just get the job done". I tell you, Poker has allowed me to meet some really great people. Title: Re: Heads-up Match - on the RADIO.....! Post by: tikay on January 12, 2006, 11:54:54 PM now that's funny............where's derby? Cupcake. And he is supposed to be a Taxi Driver! Title: Re: Heads-up Match - on the RADIO.....! Post by: langboy on January 12, 2006, 11:55:55 PM Hey You,
Just calm down now. ::) I am sure Mrs Fox will not stand for any kind of shenanigans. Us Brummies aren't like that you know. 0:-) Seriously though, I hope you have a fab time, mate.... Title: Re: Heads-up Match - on the RADIO.....! Post by: bobby1 on January 13, 2006, 12:52:05 AM It reminds me of the olden days...I think the phrase'back to square one' was originally devised by radio comm of football matches. Listeners had a grid with numbered squares and commentators would describe where the ball was on the pitch by using the numbers of the corresponding square. So 'back to square one' indicated that the ball was now deep in the defence of the team with the ball. You could use this to describe cricket too I suppose.
As for poker I remember watching live the broadcast on Pokerstars radio of the WSOP final table in the 'press room' at Binons. This consisted of two US pros commentating card for card and bet for bet. I forget the guys name but he is a big drinker and I think he won a tourney at The Bellagio in December.(Tikay, can you remember him). I certainly remember thinking how good it was, they set the scences nicely and didnt just discuss the bets and folds, they disussed the thinking and strategy and made it very interesting. So why not poker on the radio, i think the Pokerstars coverage worked well, could it not be an upgrade to the live updates? Tikay has such a great way with words. Maybe one day we will be listening to Tikay and Jen live at 'pitch side' describing every bet and fold. I think that would be great. Title: Re: Heads-up Match - on the RADIO.....! Post by: Gamblor21 on January 13, 2006, 12:56:53 AM I like it bobby!!!
I listened to the cardplayer coverage at the wsop, and really enjoyed it! as the players try to make reads on what cards they have. Rather than just releying the information... P.S I also like the current radio show with the mouth on cardplayer, it works very well i think! BlondeRadio??? Title: Re: Heads-up Match - on the RADIO.....! Post by: tikay on January 13, 2006, 12:58:29 AM Hi bobby, The guy was, as I recall, David Plastik, & I had the pleasure of meeting him again at The Vic a few months ago. You have intrigued me with your Post. Thinkng cap is firmly ON. Going back to Vegas, it WAS fascinating to listen to David give commentary, &, more importantly, analyse the situations. Big bald bugger, looked like a baseball pitcher. Got to like him a lot. Title: Re: Heads-up Match - on the RADIO.....! Post by: bobby1 on January 13, 2006, 01:03:06 AM Thats the guy, I asked around when I got back and was told'great player when sober'. He was a very nice guy, he kinda took Cupcake under his wing a little as I think they played together early in the comp. I think he burst into tears when eliminated( that might be wrong) and was very encouraging and very helpful. A sort of lovable rogue.
I can see you now mate, with one of those backpacks with huge wires sticking out of the top running from table to table to describe the action to an army of listeners. A little like challenge Annika but without the bum. ;hide; Title: Re: Heads-up Match - on the RADIO.....! Post by: tikay on January 13, 2006, 01:12:52 AM I imagine The Rookie & David Plastik would either get on very well, or there would be fisticuffs. Leave my bum alone, it's reserved. Title: Re: Heads-up Match - on the RADIO.....! Post by: bobby1 on January 13, 2006, 01:13:19 AM Blondepoker radio, great idea Ian.
.....and we have a dj Spoony(well almost)** ***please note, that was my attempt to be in some way with it, if dj Spoony is not a famous dj please ignore** Title: Re: Heads-up Match - on the RADIO.....! Post by: RED-DOG on January 13, 2006, 01:22:19 AM A little like challenge Annika but without the bum. Compo did the first half of the show tonight without the bum Title: Re: Heads-up Match - on the RADIO.....! Post by: Gamblor21 on January 13, 2006, 01:25:16 AM nice one red...
I think the radio shows would be good, news and views rather than music! 5live not radio1 I love the debates they have on 5live... they keep you awake on long drives home from poker comps! Just got to remember to change it back to radio1 before mates get in the car... i mean the car is embarassing enough! Title: Re: Heads-up Match - on the RADIO.....! Post by: Ironside on January 13, 2006, 01:26:46 AM sorry only radio station i listen to is 5live

Woman's hour You and yours The book review Home truths The Archers Shall I go on? Title: Re: Heads-up Match - on the RADIO.....! Post by: Gamblor21 on January 13, 2006, 01:29:59 AM oh my aunty and uncle love the archers!!!
We had it on at the end of Christmas dinner this year, we had to be silent, not my greatest trate! I love 5Live aswell iron, but you'd listen to BlondeRadio "sounds of the stars" Title: Re: Heads-up Match - on the RADIO.....! Post by: bobby1 on January 13, 2006, 01:33:09 AM Exactly Ian, 5live style warm ups and wind downs each night and player interviews galore from the big events, then live table side comms as it happens.
I think poker on radio could work as most events have plenty of railbirds to add atmosphere too and what about listeners lists. If you were stuck on a desert island which five poker players would you want there. Which five poker players would you like to have dinner with. 'Heids' top five records. Which player would you like to get down with....apart from the missus or Mr. Title: Re: Heads-up Match - on the RADIO.....! Post by: Tom L on January 13, 2006, 01:36:11 AM And people could ask questions and interact on the forum.
Title: Re: Heads-up Match - on the RADIO.....! Post by: Gamblor21 on January 13, 2006, 01:40:43 AM Quick someone buy the rights!
Its like live at the bike type of thing, they get asked questions from people on the forums!!! This place is a hotbed of ideas... I think VC tried this but went more music route, but that is wrong like we've said! Everyone loves talking/listening to poker strategies etc etc as long as people are not just reliving their bad beat stories! This would work, without a doubt and the live update idea sounds great. Title: Re: Heads-up Match - on the RADIO.....! Post by: bobby1 on January 13, 2006, 01:46:23 AM I used to love those Monday nights on 5live in the footy off season when a panel of 5 or 6 would discuss sporting issues, would work for poker too.
