A mole digs 5 mole hills in your back garden laid in a row.

Every day at midday he will pop his head up giving you a few seconds to hit it with your shovel - but you need to be standing in front of the right hill to do this.

After this he will move to an adjacent hill.

If you are stood at the wrong hill you do NOT see where he surfaced.

In which order do you choose to check the hills to ensure you will have got him in no longer than 6 days?

This thread is going to bring back some bad memories for Red-Dog.

First mole hill? furthest on the left.

Is that to say he will move to an adjacent hill and stay there until he pops up the next noon?

Just whack the middle one every day.

Yes, he moves exactly once a day. If he's in the left hand hill he's forced to move right. If he's in the right hand hill he's forced to move left. Anywhere else it's randomly left or right.


Doesn't work. Could endlessly just alternate betwen the two at a side.

Just throw a smoke bomb down the middle hole and smoke the bastard out then pop a cap in its ass.

You'd stand on the right hill at noon and hit him from whichever mole hill he pops out from...

Hit the second hill in on day 1 and 2. Move 1 hill to the right and Hit the middle hill on day 3 and 4 then  move one to the right and hit that hill for days 5 and 6 if need be

Hill1.               Hill 2.                Hill 3.                  Hill 4.         Hill 5.
                     Day 1/2.             Day 3/4.              Day5/6

This doesn't work because he could be on Hills 4 and 3 on Days 1-2, then just alternate between Hills 2 and 1 whilst you mess around with Hills 3 and 4 on the remaining days.

2 whacks on hole 2 forces him on to 3, 4 or 5.

Whack hole 4 means he's forced to be on 3 or 5 to still be alive.

Whack 4 again means he's either dead or on 2.

Whack 3 means he's either dead or on 1

Whack 2 means he's dead.

Hmmmm. Could be wrong.

it is possible. I gave up and googled it. the solution is really easy to understand but ridic difficult to figure out

You can force him on to 3 holes easy enough. Just need to force him on to 2 then it's curtains to the little fella!!

Don't think this quite works. When you first whack hole 4 he could move onto 2 which you don't consider.

So sure I've nailed it but don't want to post spoiler if it's right

It got to be along those lines though. You can just work it out the brute force way figuring out where he can possibly be. Don't think there's too many combinations to make that too tough.

Hitting 2 first proves the mole didnt start at 2

Hitting 3 proves it couldnt have started at 4 and gone to 3

Hitting 4 proves it could not have started at 4, because it would have had to have gone to 5 and be back at 4

Hitting 2 will kill the mole if it started on an odd number mole-hill and has gone to 2 (the obv cycle odd->even->odd)

Hitting 3 will kill the mole if it was at 4 (it has to have been if we didnt kill it at 2 or in any previous step) and has gone to 3

Hitting 4 kills the mole if it had gone to 4 from 5 (which it will have to have done if still alive)

Tom High wastes no time in spoiling it. Works backwards and inverse as well for the same reason.

Is it correct? Just spent a few mins mulling it over. If you go proving not odds 1st (as I did) it takes 7. Wasnt sure if it was waterproof
