No beckham

Terrible decision

Micah Richards is just a bad a decision

you reward a player who refused to go on the Euro stand-by list with a place in the Olympics Squad?

Would have told him to GTFO until he'd proved his attitude was right

I don't see a problem with not picking Beckham because you want more defensive cover, but Richards? For the reason Tighty said?

TBH I'm surprised Pearce didn't get a phone call from Seb Coe 'strongly suggesting' it would be marvellous if Beckham got picked.

I can't imagine 3 older aged players who less represent the Olympic ethos than Bellamy, Giggs and Richards.

Maybe should have picked Joey Barton and Lee Hughes instead.

Post by: TightEnd on June 28, 2012, 12:47:59 PM
Bellamy is a shocker to me. You've got Giggs as one of three over age, you need Bellamy as well?

I can understand Beckham not being picked, but its kick in the teeth to the guy who did a lot for the games pre/post being awarded them, and was then put on a shortlist to get picked...

Post by: redarmi on June 28, 2012, 12:52:05 PM
I am not so sure he should have been picked.  I think if you are whittling down the squad in this, frankly, ridiculous way he probably didn't make the cut at the correct point.  I have no idea if these are the right three players in terms of ability from those available but I am pretty sure Beckham isn't top 3 of those available and it isn't fair on the other 21 you pick if you don't pick the best 22 available.  i suppose you could argue there are metagame reasons to pick him but even then it must be fairly close.

Surprised Man City are allowing Richards to play tbh.

United didn't make anyone available apart from Giggs I believe.

Bellamy? My god, that is disgusting that he gets in and Becks doesnt.

Anyone got a link to the 18 man squad? Cant find it anywhere.

Jack and Bobby charlton have walked away from the squad in protest..

in other news Sebastian coe is also gutted he didn't make the egg & spoon team..

The point is, don't put him in the 35 long list if you aren't going to pick him. Just terrible PR given his profile

Very much that!

Beckham could have done a job in the Euros, let alone in this team.

Its a decision outside of fooball. This is a mickey mouse tournament in the grand scheme of things. Beckham would have at lease generated interest and given it importance.

And bellamy..................................... absolute roffle!

Oh, come on - this is the Olympics, it's in this country, and the first time there has been a British team for 40 years. Pretty sure that's interest and importance right there.

David Beckham is a 37-year old underpants salesman who was a very good footballer some time ago. Giggs and Bellamy have at least been playing regular Premier League football this season.

Becks will still score from free kicks, will sitll whip crosses in on a 6 pence onto someones head, but most importantly

Becks will mean that every stadium England play in will be packed out. Richards will done none of these its just a joke.

Such narrow minded thinking by pearce!

Pearce isn't managing the Harlem Globetrotters - what does he care if there's 60,000 or 60 watching the games.

The Olympics are being held in our country and going for the win or not, we should be putting on the best show we can, endorsed by the biggest ambassador's our country has to offer.  We've never given a toss about even entering a football team before, yet alone winning it.  I get that we want to do well but I'd have thought that it would go down better for the country as a whole having Beckham as part of that team.  Lets be honest, most of the people don't give two hoots about the football team, playing out dull 1-0 wins isn't going to intice them in.  Personally I'd rather see a "dream team" with the biggest names available in it.  Even the DTD squad could give UAE a run for their money.

link to squad?

not announced yet

all we know is that richard, giggs and bellamy are the three Over 23s permitted

the speculation is the other names include bale, ramsey and others.

18 man squad draw from all four home nations

having the backing of home support is going to be key to us all olympics it will more then likely gain us a few extra golds along the way.

This is a competetion we havent entered in donkeys years why is it so key now to care so much about "having defensive cover" Beckham should be in no doubt about it. If he wasent goiing to be in this squad he shouldnt have been named at all in the 35 man squad.

He will probably drop out of the international team due to "injury" anyway, like he used to do to Wales.

Lol - that's the argument I used with someone at work.  Like to think Pearce was picking on ability and leave it at that - wouldn't have done his rep much good if he picked Becks for a bit of PR.  I'd imagine he cares a lot about getting that tourno victory on his CV.

Well I, for one, am glad we elected to pick Micah Richards as one of our older players. He's looked every bit the class defender I've always regarded him as. Good to have that bit of experience to kick neymar in the back of the leg when he beats him in the box, through on goal.

We've offered no creativity whatsoever. If only we had a player in the middle who could shoot from distance...
