My computer was working fine today, then there was an insane thunder and lightning storm up here and one of the lightning strikes caused everything in the street to go off, including my computer. When I've switched it back on I can no longer access the internet, the modem is fine as I'm now using my housemates laptop but something's gone wrong with my desktop.

When I go to network and devices and click to see why the internet isn't working I get the following message "Install a driver for your network adapter. Windows did not detect a properly installed network adapter. If you have a network adapter, you will need to re-install the driver". Also when I go to device manager the network isn't showing.

How do I fix this please, where would I get the drivers from ? ( I don't have any disks with the computer)

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.
 

I'm using windows 7, I believe the network card is built into the motherboard, my motherboard is ASUS M4N78 SE.

Turn power right off, leave it, turn it back on. Let Windows try to search for new drivers again.
It can sometimes suggest you have a driver problem where in fact there is hardware damage, due to the power spike obv.
The network adaptors should just be held on Windows for that device.
Make and model please?

It's an AMD Phenom II X4 965 Processor 3.4 GHz. 64 bit operating system.

Windows will try to find basic network adaptors among its own general files on the PC. There should be a brand name on the box or a serial number on the back, that will give you an indication of the network card from a google search, and you could xfer the specific drivers using a USB pen or even a phone.
There may have been a software corruption, you could try a system restore to repair this, just go back to the last good date.

In the action centre it says:

Check for solutions to unreported problems

There are problems on your computer that have nor been reported to Microsoft. Some of these problems might have solutions available.

And...

Download and install a driver update

A new driver for your chipset is available. Go online to install the update.

Yep, the last one looks good. You could try connecting to the net on the PC using your phone, if you have net access on the phone, your provider should allow a little bit of data this way.

I've tried a system restore but that didn't work.

The front of the tower has G LITE on it, there's nothing else anywhere.

I have a laptop and pen drive but my phone is 10 years old so no good.

Downloaded the chipset one but that hasn't fixed anything :(

how do you connect to your router? Wireless or ethernet cable?

open a command prompt and post the output from

ipconfig /all

May well be that the network chip on the motherboard has been fried. Suspect the driver thing is a red herring.

Something like that would probably be best idea. Maplin/PC World will do the same (for about 3 times the price).
