Title: Apprentice "Hands and Heels" Races
Post by: Karabiner on July 01, 2012, 01:22:14 PM
In these races it is stated that "whips shall be carried but not used".

Does that include waving the whip at the horse in a finish?

I think the jockeys hands have got to stay on the reins at all times.

Pretty sure they're not allowed to raise the whip at all unless it's to take corrective action. You planning on taking a ride sir?

I have been retired from the saddle for about twenty years now, although I still keep my virtual hand in by riding out several finishes per week from my armchair all of which involve the whip.

i am not convinced they are even allowed to use to take corrective action anymore

there was a race about two or three weeks ago were a horse went 4 lengths clear hung allover the track and the rider did not correct it presumably because she couldnt due to the rules?
