Hope they do a better job than last year. First two episodes of the final table broadcast were basket ball.  I had it set up to record on two boxes. Both basket ball but listed as WSOP. Sill not seen those missing episodes.

Watched a few episodes on UK ESPN. Were you on featiure tables Marc?

on day 4 i was at kevin polak's (think spelling is correct) table and the camera's were there for about 2 hours. Also i was 2nd in chips on day 3 for a while, and they show that on espn i think.

just watched the espn coverage on pokertube and was disapointed by how much poker they actually show. They spent alot of time on the commentators (norman chad or whatever) telling his bad jokes and also doing features on players including jason sommerville, talking about his recent "coming out" and his new gay partner etc and how the poker community accept him being gay. I dont mind whether he is gay, straight or into animals, i was watching the wsop coverage and thought they could of spent more time on hands, but i know there selling a product etc

It seems they like to sell the 'look at my crib' image of the big money winners to keep the new players rolling in. Interesting to see some if the lay downs against the known players I wonder if the same laydowns would happen if an unknown made exactly the same bet.

I also caught prem league poker this week and couldn't believe how grumpy tony g became when he limped in the pot then lost an all in after the flop, he threw cards towards the dealer, left his chips in a heap then bet by just grabbing a handful and throwing them in. Funny to see a grown man act like a child  rotflmfao

Just watched latest episode on pokertube.

K and K feature quite prominently.

Keys doubles up some Hollywood clown who I'm pretty sure tells him to go fuck himself afterwards and Keith Johnson is on feature table with some crazy, time wasting Asian guy.

Good episode.

Title: WSOP: The October Nine
Post by: TightEnd on October 22, 2012, 01:54:50 PM
A week today play resumes in the WSOP Main Event

Jesse Sylvia leads a group of eight Americans and one Hungarian looking to become the next world champion.

Here's the 2012 WSOP main event final table:

Jesse Sylvia (43.87 million in chips): The 26-year-old will have a huge advantage in chips come October. Sylvia knows a number of players at the final table extremely well.

"Russell Thomas was my roommate two summers ago for the World Series and … he's a really good friend," said Sylvia on the Poker Edge podcast. "We don't really discuss poker, but get each other pumped up. To see him at the final table I actually feel like I'm dreaming."

Andras Koroknai (29.37 million): Koroknai, 30, will be remembered for a number of reasons from his seven-day final table run. The World Poker Tour's 2010 L.A. Poker Classic champion made a number of mistakes en route to Day 7, but once under the lights, he remained composed. The Hungarian definitely got lucky on Day 7, but he's at the final table and supported by a very big group of vocal fans who made it clear that he is a major star in his country.

Greg Merson (28.72 million): For a cash-game player, this guy can really crush tournaments. Merson entered a total of seven events during the 2012 WSOP, cashing in four, winning a bracelet and making another final table outside of the main event. He said it and everyone in Vegas has said it: He's the 2012 version of Ben Lamb. Merson has been an online cash-game superstar for the past few years, but since he's turned his sights toward tournament play this summer, he's been on quite a rush. Like Sylvia, Merson has plenty of experience with a few of his competitors.

"I'm going to be real comfortable, that's for sure," said Merson of his thoughts at the final table, citing how deep the play will be at the beginning. "It's nice to see the cash-game players have a good shot. … [The final table is] not going to be like a turbo like has been in the past."

Russell Thomas
(24.80 million): Thomas is an actuary by trade, but he may be reconsidering his career path after making the main event final table. The 24-year-old from Hartford, Conn., is cash-game focused, but plans on incorporating some more tournaments over the next few months to prepare. Thomas cashed in the main event in 2011, finishing in 248th, and has one other WSOP final table under his belt with a fifth-place finish in a six-handed no-limit hold 'em event in 2010. Thomas admitted that he hasn't played much since Black Friday, but he's thrilled for the opportunities ahead. "Everything went pretty well," Thomas said of his final day. "I'm going to work really hard on my tournament game [for the next few months]."

Steven Gee (16.86 million): At 57, Gee is the oldest member of the final table and joins Merson as the only WSOP bracelet winners that remain. Gee's big moment on Day 7 came with a lucky river card that gave him a straight in a three-way all-in with 20 players to go. Just like so many players at this final table, Gee plays cash games almost exclusively and know that while he may have the live experience the younger players may not, he has a lot of work to do before October.

"It's unbelievable. It's a really hard feeling to describe. I know I feel great," said Gee. "In 2010 when I won my bracelet it was the brightest moment of my life, poker-wise, and I didn't think I could ever top that. … Guess what? In 2012, this moment is bigger than 2010. I don't have the bracelet yet, but the moment is still different. Making the final table is almost as good as winning the bracelet."

Michael Esposito (16.26 million): On Day 7, Esposito almost made it look easy to reach this point. The commodity broker from New York played with an intensity that was clear with every bet, call and raise. The 43-year-old has been playing poker well before the Moneymaker boom and now has four career WSOP cashes, including two in the main event.

Robert Salaburu
(15.15 million): His friends call the 27-year-old Texan a solid player and one who is truly modest. Even after making the final table of the biggest event of the year, that personality was clearly on display. He's been playing for a decade, and while he's had some success, maintaining that success has been a challenge. Now, with his sights set on October, he's just looking to write the next chapter in his poker career. "I'm just happy to be here," said Salaburu. "I've just been having fun with this, that's all you can do. … I'm just trying to win the thing. That's all I can do. I'm playing as good as I can."

Jacob Balsiger (13.11 million): There's little debate that when Balsiger returns to Arizona State University in the fall, he's going to be one of the most popular kids on campus. The senior is a political science major with one year to go, and in between finishing his classes, he'll have to play the biggest final table of his life. A victory for the 21-year-old, who doesn't have a lot of live tournament experience, will make him the youngest main event champion in WSOP history.

"I [started playing poker] back in middle school for $5 and it was a big deal to win $30," said Balsiger. "Now the stakes are a little bit higher."

Jeremy Ausmus (9.80 million): Not only does Ausmus have the final table to look forward to this fall, but his wife is expecting the birth of their second child in early November. The 32-year-old professional poker player had nine WSOP cashes in 2012 and has 14 throughout his career. It wasn't easy to get to the final table and Ausmus is determined to make the most out of this opportunity.

"You enter the tournament and in the back of your mind, it's possible," Ausmus said of what he expected at the start of the main event. "Almost 7,000 people [entered] and you're a long shot to make it. It still doesn't seem real that I'm here. Honestly."

All players left Las Vegas with at least $754,798 in prize money

Here's what they're playing for in addition to the WSOP main event championship bracelet:

1. $8,527,982
2. $5,292,889
3. $3,797,558
4. $2,850,494
5. $2,154,616
6. $1,640,461
7. $1,257,790
8. $971,252
9. $754,798

Totally agree that for some reason the interest in this year's Main Event seems to be at an all-time* low.

With how deep they are this should be one of the better finals in recent years, looking forward to it.

gl Merson, Sylvia and Ausmus for me.

Gota hope Koroknai's disgusting heater has calmed down to stop him though imo. (almost definitely biased from the WSOP coverage ive seen)

Alex holding a book for this?

Robert Salaburu For most tilting manner at the table ever. Just comes across as a douche.

Merson to win it, his 2+2 thread in HSNL about drug addiction is so open and honest on such a frowned upon issue.

Overall, liked Merson the best, will have to dig up the 2+2 thread.

the problem with this alex is that there are a number of firms pricing up, so you will have to offer better prices than all of these to get custom http://www.oddschecker.com/other-sports/poker/world-series-of-poker/winner

Two poker professionals and a college student have topped nearly 6,600 competitors at the World Series of Poker and are one session away from poker's richest prize, $8.53 million

Jake Balsiger eliminated Russell Thomas in fourth place early Tuesday, 24-year-old poker pros Greg Merson of Laurel, Md., and Jesse Sylvia of Las Vegas join him in the final three.

"I can't wait to get back up here and play. I wish we could play it out right now," said Sylvia, who started the session of more than 7 hours with the chip lead but was overtaken by Merson.

"We have a long battle tomorrow," he said.

Thomas won $2.85 million for fourth place, then said after being eliminated that he planned to quit his job as an insurance actuary for Aetna to turn pro.

"Made my company a little mad because I quit my job in a newspaper article, and now I'm doing it in a press conference," he said.

Merson vaulted to a dominant chip lead thanks to an opponent's startling error, then finished the session with 88.4 million in chips, compared with 62.8 million for Sylvia and 46.9 million for Balsiger.

Merson eliminated Hungarian poker professional Andras Koroknai in sixth place, when Koroknai 6 bet shoved K-Q into A-K.

Koroknai won $1.64 million for sixth place, while Merson won 84 million in chips, nearly double that of his closest competitor.

Merson said he expected iKoroknai to make a mistake, and told Sylvia during one of the breaks that he expected Koroknai to bluff away all his chips.

"When short-handed play starts, I think that's my game because a lot of players either play too tight, or they over-adjust," he said.

Poker professional Robert Salaburu was ousted in eighth. Minutes later, Michael Esposito went out in seventh, his ace-jack failing to pull ahead of Merson's ace-king.

Jeremy Ausmus, 33, of Las Vegas, placed fifth.

"I never had cards the whole day," Esposito said. "At the end of the day, I'm going home a rich person."

Steve Gee, a 57-year-old poker professional from Sacramento, Calif., was eliminated in ninth place less than two hours into play after testing Thomas moving all-in for the last of his 11.4 million in chips.

Thomas called and showed a pair of queens, better than Gee's pocket eights.

"If I knew he had pocket queens, I would have checked," Gee said after being eliminated. "I'm disappointed. I told myself I wasn't going to play scared."

On the first hand of play, Gee bluffed Thomas on a pot worth several million chips, though Thomas held just nine high and wouldn't have been able to consider playing the hand to the end.

Esposito, 44, a commodities broker from Seaford, N.Y., was uncertain about the status of his waterfront home as Superstorm Sandy hit the East Coast.

His son, James Esposito, said neighbors told him the streets are flooded, but the family was focused on the card game in the Nevada desert.

"Odds are likely that it's flooded," he said. "I know I saw a picture of the house three doors down — the streets are totally flooded."

The chip leader heading into the final table was Sylvia, who began the final stretch with 43.9 million in chips, just over 22 percent of the chips in play.

The finalists played Monday night until only three players remained, leaving the top three to settle the title Tuesday night.

Amazing that they've been playing nearly 10 hours and are back to the chip stacks they started with now.

At 365 hands and counting, this is now the longest WSOP Main Event final table in history.

Was that live on ESPN in the USA for the whole 12 hours?

If it was, that's got to be the end of the November 9 thing!! ESPN will be sick at having a 12 hour live OB.

Couldn't believe they were still going when I woke up!

Yes it was as far as I know. And yes I agree. The relatively boring players/play won't help either.

Yep it was.  As soon as it ended it went straight to sports centre.  No player interviews.

I was following the updates some and thought the final hand was a bit odd and the K9 hand too but people make weird plays when this tired I guess. Not sure why he 3bet the JQ final hand. 3bet/calling can't be profitable there and I know Merson was crushing the entire time but still seems bad.

Happy that Greg won, for some reason Jesse tilted me on the edited broadcasts.

all of them were too aggro pre, thats for sure, they were 3b/folding hands that were too strong and should have seen a flop with.

As played the qjs hand was pretty std, 2 hands previously merson 4b to 18.8m so when he jams here its a pretty easy call as merson si 4b/calling storng hands and vs a range of lots of poacket pairs and k/ax our hand has comfortably enough equity, especially with the dead money

agree with Pleno I think the QJs call is fine I just dont like the 3b too much.

I think the K9 hand was stnd enough as well, 3handed.

I had only just got back from making a coffee and only saw Sylvia  pondering his decision.

Was it?

Merson 4m

Sylvia 9.5m

Merson 69m?

Sylvia calllll

I'm probably  just as zonked as he looked anyway, so probably misread it myself :)

As played the call is fine but I think its pretty optimistic to think that you can induce a wide enough range to 4b jam heads up in the world series main to make 3b/call > flatting

OK obviously I wasn't paying enough attention and was only checking poker news here and there so couldn't see the majority of the cards. I assume both players had people telling them things like the quoted so yes that makes it an obvious call after the 3bet but the 3bet was the problem imo. If people were telling Jesse things like this then you would assume that Greg would balance his range more.

I thought Balsiger didn't seem to be 3betting a lot (lol sample) but on further checking he did seem to be more aggressive than I thought so I guess K9 is ok ish.

Guessing it's fundamentally wrong if you're all in agreement, but not sure I'd want to call off another 30bb with QJ for my life....

I dont think was a concern for Greg, optimal play here is just to play every hand optimally in a vacuum, Antonio made a comment about Jesse's body language when he made the 3bet (the same read he'd had a few orbits ago when Jesse 3b/fold Q8o) so it's actually pretty likely Greg had picked up on the same thing and this played a decent role in his decision to 4b/jam.

I don't think it's necessarily an obvious call with QJs here, I think the call is 100% a correct one, Busquet was saying in the commentary KJs would be a call for him, I think Jesse is expecting to see a lot of suited Qx/Kx/small PPsand with 22million dead and the fact Merson is a very tough opponent I think caling is better than folding.

Like you say, 3betting not the best though

His plan was to 5 jam over Mersin 18.7 which happened the previous orbit, was t expecting a jam hence the 3b tank
