I was wondering if any of you know of any words that people will strongly disbelieve exist. I have a mate who thinks i am an idiot and i am able to get bets from him on a variety of different things where i know i am definitely right, he sees my confidence and still bets with me.

I did him last week on the existence of the word 'winningest' where he was adamant that it didn't exist and i knew it did. So i am not looking for words that nobody knows and won't question if they exist but little variations on common words where people will really think you are talking bollocks.

Also interested in any other hustling tricks to take advantage of this guy.

Winningest is a horrible word, and don't think it's standard British English. Also not sure it's in the OED either.

Floccinauccinihilipilification is great word. As is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosises.

The longest word in the English language is something like 1,184 letters long. It's - if memory serves - an eye condition particularly prevalent in miners.

What was the quiz program where the contestants used this on a regular basis. I think they were given 3 letters and had to use them in the right order to make the longest world possible.

One of my great achievements was explaining Pythagoras's Theorem to a group of mates I play pool with (all labourers/fitters) using beermats. The best part was when a bricky realised that he used it in his work (a 3-4-5 is the name he and his team give to a piece of wood used to confirm that the corner has been made properly).


Back to OP: is your mate going to get suspicious if you keep going back with words? You should throw in a few you know are wrong to keep him on his toes.

Not at all, mate! My eyes are open widely enough to recognise I'm not normal :)

Lo and behold, an expert on The Restoration Game was demonstrating the 3-4-5 method for getting the decking base square

It was enough for £10 of the Queen's pounds so i am not complaining. You will see me using it in many sentences now just to piss off my mate.

 
It is more the trick of finding a word that he believes can't exist rather than ones that could well be peculier and exist. I want him to be questioning himself. He is getting the rope-a-dope from me i am putting in loads of made up words to him and when he calls bullshit i extend my arm out for a tenner bet, when he goes for my hand I withdraw and say well played. But he doesn't win any money.

I like the looks of inhaust so far because it seems like i am riding off the back of exhaust and just adding my own vibe.

Thing is I see it as a lesson in life to my mates, so its like I am providing a service.

But no seriously, its banter and competition between mates. Our way of being matey is to out do eachother and there are always bets being made! With the words thing it is not a hustle is it really, its just them not being knowledgeable enough, I am not doing slight of hand tricks here!.

I only really wanted peculier words to ruffle their feathers and they are now privy to my ways. They couldn't believe inhaust was a word.

But planning this in advance goes against the spirit of this kind of bet. Banter is cool and there is no reason not to take a bet with one of your mates when you know you are right and taking their money and the situation just sort of popped up, I  am sure we all do this. But I don't think it is cool to plan doing this in advance. You seem to be looking up the words and then looking for opportunities to take advantage of people. Perhaps I am wrong but does not sound like fun to me.

Yeh it's fine if it's spur-of-the-moment, using knowledge you already have, but planning it in advance, specifically researching privately to gain extra-knowledge is ool imo.

This wouldn't be and even though i haven't explained this i wouldn't have taken anymore money from my mates after planning to try and get them using this thread. I would however get them to the point where we are about to shake hands and say no, i know i am right lets stop this.

Previous with mate is he thinks i am a dopey person, so i have taken it upon myself to outwit him wherever i can and this is one way.

But yeh the nature of this thread is a little suspicious but the fundamental thing is i am taking no money from my mates in a planned way i am now just trying to catch them off guard for the japes.

I do realise i am going against my op, but in my heart of hearts i was never going to take anymore money from mates in this planned way.
