Title: Superstitions while playing Post by: Ant040689 on September 26, 2012, 11:03:29 PM Anyone else have them at all?
I find that when i am in an important pot all in pre and it turns out to be a flip (so not too often across the night), I am sort of shuffling my feet a little and occasionally when i have ak versus qq and its the turn and i still haven't got there i might start shouting things like BINK and swaying my head back and forth in anticipation as if i am about to head a goal in. One of the above normally happens at least once a night. Or actually another one is i go completely still, thinking much movement might affect my chances, think its accompanied by holding my breath as well. Am i the only one? Am i special? Do you guys have anything peculiar along these lines? Title: Re: Superstitions while playing Post by: jgcblack on September 26, 2012, 11:05:37 PM Anyone else have them at all? Do you guys have anything peculiar along these lines? All my online names are 'binkmepls'.... The word bink is sacred. But nothing 'serious' on the superstition front. Random fact of the day - I saw on a tv show once that superstitions wise "there is a form of 'knock on wood' superstition in almost EVERY single culture.." It's the widest reaching across cultures and people and places. Title: Re: Superstitions while playing Post by: smashedagain on September 27, 2012, 10:13:57 AM I always have to have my chips the right easy up and never mixed up.
Makes my shit itch playing 3 or 4 handed and winning big pots and the dealer shoves my neat stacked towers back to me and the chips go all over the place. Title: Re: Superstitions while playing Post by: MC on September 27, 2012, 10:56:40 AM I seriously recommend you read The Mental Game of Poker if you have such superstitions.
Having said whenever I insta-snap call an all-in I always lose, so I usually take a second before calling :) Title: Re: Superstitions while playing Post by: david3103 on September 27, 2012, 11:39:04 AM Lucky pants ftw
http://www.helpforheroes.org.uk/shop/products/3-Pack-Herowear-Boxers.html Chips all stacked the same way up is also important. Value side downwards, which is actually upside down at DTD. Title: Re: Superstitions while playing Post by: smashedagain on September 27, 2012, 11:44:56 AM Lucky pants ftw arrrrrgghhhh. Title: Re: Superstitions while playing Post by: Tal on September 27, 2012, 12:34:13 PM I think some people are confusing superstitions with OCD.
No superstitions but all chips must face the correct way up (at DTD, that is value side UP) and no alignment of pattern, when looking at the stack from felt level. I don't think I'll lose if I don't; I just like things to be on my terms :) As for things I try to do to ensure I don't ruin my chances of success (I guess being the OP's question), when I'm in a really important race AIPF, I like to try and win at least one in four (I'm realistic...) I have a superstition though, it's impossible to have a hand hold against Mitch when he's eating... The worst is the ones who wipe their hands on their trousers. They know they have piss on them, but they decide, not enough to use a bit of soap before touching the same cards and chips as everyone else. Or, straight to the buffet. Ahrt Title: Re: Superstitions while playing Post by: zerofive on September 27, 2012, 01:39:47 PM As a man of science I am quite aware that superstition is not a thing, but it can definitely become a thing. I recently had to throw out my red boxers 'cause I had my two biggest losing days in them and just couldn't bring myself to wear them again; pretty sure if I did I would have a different mental attitude going into a game, albeit only slightly. I know that's pretty dumb, but the subconscious mind is a powerful thing.
Also re: holding/binking in all-ins. If you will it hard enough, fate will take great pleasure in bending you over and crushing your dreams. You have to convince fate that you want to lose, but fate is too savvy to fall for the "I don't want to win" mentality. You have to get it just right with a sarcastic "I'm a favourite," even with three or less outs. You will always level fate into making the wrong decision, which is beneficial for us. No, I don't mean wash their hands and dry them on their trousers, I mean take a piss and wipe the drips on their trousers. The bastards who really annoy me are those who go in the cubicles piss all over the seat. There is absolutely no hope of them ever washing their hands. What is that about? Give them a choice of 20 urinals, I know wht I'll do, I'll go piss on one of these seats in here... And why do you get one of them in every office you ever work in? Two disabled people, check; enough ladies in management positions, check; IT help desk so that we can be told to switch our computers off and on again when something goes wrong, check; fella who always uses the cubicle and pisses on the seat, check. Title: Re: Superstitions while playing Post by: Ant040689 on September 27, 2012, 04:23:20 PM I love it that the insta snap call all in with AA was mentioned because i swear i lose with it all the time as well, so i deffo give it a second or two before calling, tht made me lol actually great call.
I also notice that when there is a 1bbs stack all in he normally never gets accurate odds in the match up but will just almost always go out in the next all in, but maybe tht is just me. The OCD/superstition thing with me isn't a problem requiring any treatment from books or anyone else imo, because i always take what i do in a light hearted way and it has become a part of an enjoyable routine because if i do bink i love it and if i lose i really don't care too much i did all i can, onto the next one... If it was preventing me from playing as close to optimally as i could then i would seek to get rid.
