Title: Special Bets Post by: Dubai on September 27, 2012, 11:59:47 AM Youve all seen them advertised- like last night lad comes on for Man Utd and Hills have laid his Dad £100@100s he plays first team game for Man U when the player was 9 years old. They always claim to do some research, obviously a footballing family is far more likely to succeed in the bet etc, plus he was probably on the books somewhere anyway. So anyways it got me thinking..
Whats the hardest type of these bets to win? Betting a newborn to win a golf major has got to be one of them? Realistic price? Title: Re: Special Bets Post by: AndrewT on September 27, 2012, 12:04:41 PM Something that the bookie will factor into this (and why it may be a good bet for you) is that they know if it cops, they'll be able to get more than the value of the bet in the value of equivalent advertising that running the win as a news story will get them in the papers.
So when Crab Junior beats Tiger Woods Junior in a playoff in the 2034 Masters they'll make sure it gets plenty of coverage in the press with the 98 year old Graham Sharpe getting his mug in the papers again. Title: Re: Special Bets Post by: Acidmouse on September 27, 2012, 12:06:17 PM My wife has a bet on my eldest daughter 3 will play for England at footy before 21. 50/1 only £10 at Hills, they didn't do any research and seemed happy to take my wonga. Wife played at international level so I am happy with the odds, esp for womens..
Title: Re: Special Bets Post by: Dubai on September 27, 2012, 12:06:37 PM Yeah of course. But most of these bets are normally a max 10k payout. Was thinking realistic price of winning a major must be 100,000-1+ with no golf pedigree in family. So would take 10,000-1. Even £100 pays £1m. Good publicity allround.
What about price to play in a Ryder Cup? Obviously was easier than winning a major and topical at moment as its on Title: Re: Special Bets Post by: Dubai on September 27, 2012, 12:07:44 PM My wife has a bet on my eldest daughter 3 will play for England at footy before 21. 50/1 only £10 at Hills, they didn't do any research and seemed happy to take my wonga. Title: Re: Special Bets Post by: Acidmouse on September 27, 2012, 12:10:58 PM I went into a Hills in Harr0gate last year...while the wife scoffed in Betty's.

With the clause, they should have worn masks when they took the bet. The pool of dedicated good women players is tiny It helps my wife used to play with the current England/GB manager and knows here and many of the current top coaches for the top teams. 50/1 is tight but its only for fun. If I have asked for more and upped the bet I am sure they would have checked some of our backgrounds and reduced it to 20/1. What you say above is quite possibly true but something like 5000-1 would seem to be a fairer price. She must be more than 100-1 to be interested in football when she grows up, multiply that by any number that you like to then go on and be good. Nothing wrong with the bet though, it´s a nice bit of fun, gl. Title: Re: Special Bets Post by: smashedagain on September 27, 2012, 05:08:47 PM Sinem Melin played at a decent level.

I understand this, but there are approx 50 million people in this country, and in the 4 year period your nipper will have to play for England probably 5 million women eligible. To put it in perspective, which do you think is more likely, your girl to play for England before she's 21 or QPR to beat West Ham 4-0 on Monday night? Because they are the same price. Pedigree genes and likely to have a good level of interest. Good point though. And each is almost twice as likely as Spurs winning the premier league this season. I'll say it before Karabiner/Tikay reads this thread Title: Re: Special Bets Post by: Ironside on September 27, 2012, 07:04:19 PM £10k thats like a months wage for the boy at present if he makes many more apearances it will likely be a weeks wage next season
Title: Re: Special Bets Post by: Dubai on September 27, 2012, 07:06:18 PM What price betting a 7 month boy unable to walk, crawl or show any signs of sporting ability etc, with no sporting background in family- to win a major in golf? Or to play in Ryder cup?
Title: Re: Special Bets Post by: Junior Senior on September 27, 2012, 07:43:40 PM What price betting a 7 month boy unable to walk, crawl or show any signs of sporting ability etc, with no sporting background in family- to win a major in golf? Or to play in Ryder cup? I would want 100,000/1 at least Title: Re: Special Bets Post by: Dubai on September 27, 2012, 07:44:17 PM Yeah i assume its 100,000-1 shot. But will take 10,000-1 for fun
Title: Re: Special Bets Post by: Junior Senior on September 27, 2012, 07:59:36 PM So youre gonna devote serious time to making this happen? Ie coaching and pushing the child at golf. Personally i think you are better off choosing a different achievement in a different sport. Making the ryder cup team for most young men who take up golf seriously just doesnt happen. I played golf at a very good level for 18 years and was nowhere near. I knew 1000s of lads all across the country who were in my age range and only the 2 absolute best have made it and they were literally bred to do it with nothing else in their lives from the age of 12....but they also had incredible natural talent and good fortune to be picked for scholarships and elite programmes from the age of 14-18
100,000/1 is probably not even close. Why not play badminton for GB in 2036 olympics, reckon you would get same price and that IMO would be more achievable Title: Re: Special Bets Post by: Dubai on September 27, 2012, 08:00:16 PM I was just going to bribe a Ryder Cup captain to select him as a wildcard even if he doesnt play golf
Title: Re: Special Bets Post by: Rubbish2407 on September 27, 2012, 08:29:42 PM Ian Poulter wasn't particularly gifted and had his first assistant pro job when he had a six handicap! He was financially backed which allowed him to turn Pro when he was 20 and he didn't get an European tour card until he was 23.
If your kid wants it and you've got the money then Golf or Tennis is your best bet. Any team sport and I guess the other kids will resent him if he's picked because his Dad is funding the squad. Title: Re: Special Bets Post by: Rubbish2407 on September 27, 2012, 08:32:09 PM And I've never seen a tour pro shank as many times as Poulter.
Title: Re: Special Bets Post by: Simon Galloway on September 27, 2012, 08:32:28 PM Souness signed Ali Dia ... prolly to land a similar coup.
