Title: Ryder Cup!

I'm surprised to wake up and not find a thread on this. So looking forward to it, I've had a few cheeky bets for interest.

Mac and Mac
Donald Garcia
Dufner Johnson
Woods stricker

Done the 4 fold and a couple of doubles. Really like Donald and Sergio, never lost a foursomes game and playing against an out of sorts mickleson and Bradley. Had a lump at evens.

Anyone else playing this morning?

I had a bet on Stricker to be overall top scorer at 17-1. I think this is value!

I've just had a somewhat speculative lucky 15 on all the morning games to be halved @ 6/1.

I agree that Donald/Garcia look to be the standout bet @ evs, but I've not played as I feel that the lack of any rough worth speaking about is a bit of a leveller.

I'm on the EW Double Tiger and Donald Top Points Europe and USA - felt the EW bit is a little dirty as many will play less games and I think they play 4/5

Wish I had thought of this.  Both seem very strong to me although I don't really understand why Woods is so much shorter than Stricker given they may play together for three or four matches surely their points are strongly correlated.

Not sure exactly what you mean by this but Poulter is one of the hardest working pros in golf.  He worked his way up from an assistant pro and deserves everything he has got imo.

Depends on the tournament US Open is set up to be a lot harder than USPGA or Tour Championship.  Love asked for all the rough to be cut for this week to suit the US team so its pretty much been neutered

He's been better than Lawrie at least.

Kaymer should have done a Sandy Lyle and stood down from the team

Think Martin Laird would have been a decent choice (although he can only play on a one way course.. not sure if this is his way)

It's a good question, big blow for the Woods/Donald E/W double backers the way things have worked out (it looked a great bet). Garcia has a foursomes shocker then Donald sits out the afternoon. Woods has a complete nightmare foursomes then Stricker plays the worst driving round of his life in the fourballs, then Tiger sits out and then Donald gets handicapped with Westwood (obviously there are good things about this partnership as a foursome). Backers of this bet could barely run worse, the win part is basically down before a ball has been struck on the second day. That seeemed an impossibility yesterday morning.

That's why leaving Poulter and Donald - Europe's best two putters - out yesterday was a bit silly.

I don't think Europe would have got anything out of the top 2 games whoever played yesterday though.

So 5-3 was about as good as we could hope for.

Just need a couple of the yanks to cool off overnight.

Pending some of our players getting hot and turning this around, the course is really no test for these US rookies. Which I suppose is the plan by DL3!

Personally i think we were never going to win this Ryder Cup with the type of course and the way it is set up.  Its a bombing a putting contest, which in general the americans will be better in.  He has to leave Westwood out as he cant putt and also same applies to Garcia.  Donald and Poulter have to play as does 3G..  Either way we cant win

Fair point.  His game just looks way off at the minute.  We all know he can't putt but his iron play is usually so strong that he gets plenty of chances but he wasn't threatening the pin at all yesterday.  We are carrying too many players whereas only Stricker and Tiger look "off" for the Americans.

Agree with regards to the course set up.

Yes, yesterday was horrible. I can see us winning this next session; not quite sure what logic I am following by put 3-1

I'm not a golf buff by any stretch of the imagination.  There is no doubting the americans have been class, but Europe are making them look far better than they are imo.

we just look like were really lacking that buzz that weve had over the last 15 years, i dont even think weve had it the last 2 ryder cups, think as players begin to play multiple ryder cups, they maybe become scared to look too excited on camera, whereas when your a rookie, you pretty much have nothing to lose so you dont mind showing that bit of enthusiasm. and with some of our players, i just think they play better when theyre pumped!!

I went for the halved matches in foursomes as I felt that they were far more likely in that format.

I don't have any statistical evidence to back up my gut feeling but if anyone actually does have some stats to hand that will either prove or disprove my theorem I would appreciate the input.

It goes without saying Simpson is the more talented player player, he seems close to the top of his game (carrying Bubba on the whole). He hits it so much further than Poults (who is overbet by the patriotic types), is really well suited by the course and putts so well he might just blow him away before Poulter gets a chance to show his heart and determination. I made it basically an even game (given how Poulter raises his game in the RC), 6/4 looks big.

I did prices for the firm i am working for last night.  I thought about 4/5 was a fair price for Poulter dnb so yeah probably a touch of value.  On another note we were up with prices.  No other firm had anything for at least 90 minutes yet we didn't take a single bet until other firms came up and then the arbers came out to play.

It would be naïve to suggest that this were unique to the Yanks. I'm sure the odd, lubricated gentleman in blue would make similarly unpleasant gestures in the home Ryder Cups.

I've always been one who doesn't like cheering/celebrating when a villain misses or messes up, particularly in individual sports. It's different IMO in football when a player rounds the keeper and puts it wide against your team and the player often turns round to his teammates and moves on. When Poulter chipped straight into the bunker yesterday, the reaction of the crowd was appalling. It was a man on his own, ten feet from 100 people celebrating, jeering and mocking his moment of weakness.

I don't think I'll ever get used to that, really.

Sky Sports News man did a report today, saying that he has spoken to "people inside the locker room and people close to the locker room" and that they are pretty unhappy about the comments (then listing the examples above).

There is always an idiot, I suppose.

I could say something horrifically stereotypical like "Those Americans have never grasped good banter" and mention the WSOP but I'm not that kind of person :)

Must admit I dont have a problem with it either.  The Ryder Cup is so good because of all the extra needle and because it is so different from a normal golf event yet the traditionalists bemoan the fact it isn't like a normal golf event.  I can accept Tikays view he doesn't like the event for that reason but anything else is hypocrisy imo.

I love the banter and I do take your point. There is probably a subtle difference between cheering for your own side when they get an unexpected opportunity and cheering the failure of the opposition.

Cant believe they werent all atthe course in advance together today.  I have felt in this ryder cup more than any that the management of the team and the captaincy has been poor.  When monty and torrance ran the show you felt they had it all planned and did a great job of getting them all tigether and managing the team.  Rory so far out of line being late, really dont get it.

If you go past the fans (who weren't actually that boorish in this one) the standout thing for me is the amount of real respect the players have for their opponents and the genuine warmth between the players on the Europe team.

I've never been so happy after doing my money on an event.

Was on 3G in his single and dabbled on the overall tie which were both losers today although I was a small winner after the first two days, but totally enjoyed every minute of the three days.

I now have a serious beard to shave off.

I actually love the cheering when someone fucks up, it's a team event. When someone misses a penalty you cheer. This is not a normal event it's only a big event becuase the fans love it so much. If you take away the team aspect then the fans won't enjoy it as much and the event would diminish.

I love the banter and I do take your point. There is probably a subtle difference between cheering for your own side when they get an unexpected opportunity and cheering the failure of the opposition.

Hope you get to see the greatest comeback since Lazarus today, to quote the great Sid Waddell.

Unbelievable end to an unbelievable sporting year (I believe that is it ?).

So many heroes for Europe today, the biggest for me was Justin Rose, what a performance from 16 thru to 18, that was when I started to think we could win it and I'd imagine that was when a few of the USA team got worried.

Watched everyone come through 5 until gmac, then moved to 15 where we railed every match until Kaymers, at that point we moved to 18, simply incredible atmosphere at 18. Wouldn't trade the experience for anything and even laid USA at 1.14 on the train to Medinah this morning :)

Ok, we won and everything, but does anyone else think that Love was still the better captain?

He made the big call to drop Woods on Sat morning, Olazabal didn't drop the equally poor Westwood, who let Colsaerts take on Stricker/Woods on his own on Friday afternoon, then got ripped apart on Sat morning (albeit Bradley/Mickleson played amazing in that match). Europe only came good on the Sunday, which is the day the captain has least influence, as everyone plays (especially when 4 points down - not much else to do other than frontload your team with the big guns and hope it creates momentum (Monty's favourite word))

The thing which seems to have essentially been Olazabal's advantage was simply that he was Spanish and so closely associated with Seve, so it was the constant reminder of Seve that he gave the players that would have been the inspiration to the performance.

I didn't pay a huge amount of attention to the post-match interviews but I would imagine that the European players mentioned Seve more than they did Olazabal.

It's most probs the only event I could not watch towards the end. I was so nervous my wife was texting me from upstairs to watch it :)

One thing I noticed was how well Europe won in terms of not over celebrating, rubbing the yanks faces in it. So much respect shown for each other and the teams.

I want the gonads of Poulter, man I freeze when an old man and his dog see me tee off let alone 10000's.

Loves decision to "rest" Bradley and Mickelson to save them for the singles after they were 3 and 0 on Saturday afternoon was a shocker imo. Results orientated obviously but he rests them, plays Woods and Stricker- they lose, Europe get back in and both Mickleson and Bradley lose their singles. No idea how the media isnt all over this decision

Olazabal made the worse decision, I would suggest, leaving out Poulter on the first afternoon, a decision made before the Friday morning

The idea Woods conceded that putt to Molinari was a great act of sportsmanship is ridiculous beyond words.

If Molinari needed that putt to make it 14-14 it's infinity to one Tiger would have given it to him.

14-14 was the same as 14.5-13.5 to the Americans, they don't win the cup with either score. I think Tiger just wanted to get off the course asap.

Why isn't the cup shared if it's 14-14?

(The same thing applies when Jack Nicklaus gave Tony Jacklin that putt.. again it made no difference to who lifted the cup)

Best performance was Rose beating mickleson i thought, unreal last 3 holes he played.

The highlight of the day for me was when Rose sank that huge putt (17?) and Mickleson just turns away shaking his head in amazement.

The Mickelson v Rose game was amazing throughout.

Both played absolutely stunning golf.

Ah fair enough. Some odd folk about. I'd suggested Woods missed to take the heat off Stricker. In jest, naturally.

Apparently the American team didn't join the Europeans for a beverage. First time I've heard of that happening. Doubt it's the first time it's happened of course.

Ryder cup app is pretty cool this time around. Live radio from practice rounds all day today and cool guests. Loads of video clips too.
