The 419 Scam was actually pretty effective, as effective as it's predecessor the French Prisoner Scam... If you want to see something interesting read about the Imperial Consolidated Fraud (Guys from Lincoln).. These guys got tried for it twice but got off Scott free... Maybe they had some great legal advice ;) or maybe they were smart enough to beat the Serious fraud squad ;joestrummer; whatever it was they got away with it...
