Title: Best River Line?
Post by: Eso Kral on October 19, 2012, 11:59:28 AM
Chip Leader Comp

We have been the most active player on our table but in the few levels so far have only had AA/KK/AK utg so hopefully have some vagrancy vig UTG vs this villain who is a BRS or Poker Encore online mtt player.

We start the hand with 240k and the villain comfortably covers

Blinds 6/1200/200

I open UTG with  9s Js to 2400 and get flatted by Villain in H/J with the BB coming along as well and we see the flop of

 4h 9d Qs  (pot 9400)

BB Chks, I lead for 4200 and get flatted by Villain with the BB folding

Turn  9h  (17800)
My thought process on the turn was that I now had a much stronger hand than I should have in this spot and against said villain if I check he is likely to see this as weakness and think he bets the turn a very high % of the time so checked and he bet 6200 which I CR to 14300 which was prbs a bit small in hindsight (thoughts on sizing and line?)

River  Th  (46400)

Obv not a great card and was stuck for best line so WWYD and Why on this river please?

FWIW I bet 18k otr

Not a huge fan of c/r on turn could fold out a lot of hands we could get paid otr with, but if took this line probs make it a bit more (16.8k), prefer bet, bet, bet until we meet major resistance. As played i'm looking at 33,300 on river. He's not finding a fold with QK if he jams i fold.

def def def bet turn. If not u have to ch/call and likely keeps pot smaller. If he checks back turn or river then u lose a lot of value vs if you bet bet and he is in calldown mode.

Ch/raise turn too strong.

bet/bet/bet gona have hard time putting you on a 9 and people dont like folding top pair, also charge JT, flushdraws. bet a little bigger as played on the river, if hes a good hand reader he can definitely turn Qx into a bluff as you don't have many boats/flushes with this line/bet sizings imo. Vs a recdonkfish this sizing looks good.

dont like turn play given a) 3way vs your utg range hes not gna float that wide and b) u said u expected him to bluff a fair amount when we check so why not keeping his bluffing freq? i c/c turn and would prolly c/c this river unless he makes it obv sizing/live read that we have better.

as played, think his b/c'ing range is r polarized ott. so not much value from KQ, QJ. think he would fold AQ more often than call it in this spot. cant believe im abt to say that but i c/f. dont see what he could turn into a bluff. dont think he would value bet worse except for 98s, 79s thts about 2 combos.

I like the turn c/r. Bet/bet/bet is fine too and obv really standard but this line will win you a bigger pot IMO. He will still call turn with all his Qx hands when you c/r. Would bet bigger on the river though as a small bet on the river could look weak and give him a chance to turn something into a bluff and make us fold. If u bet big you polarise your range to nuts/air and most likely outcome will be he calls you with a Queen.

this.

Not sure what you're thinking Ott Rich.  You've got a strong hand and you suddenly put in a Cr?? Why?

Bet/ bet/ bet is the only line possible imo.  Anything else is spew and fps.  You can get hero'd a lot and it stops him checking back the turn as a lot of players will here.  He can't have tp very often and isn't likely betting 2ndp or worse.  Probably only betting his floats, and they obv aren't calling a Cr.

As a former victim of this myself 'we' think its sneaky at the time.  But it isn't.

People Cr turn bluff less than 2% in my experience.

My new thing when im working out how to play a hand is to say to myself -
"what would I do with AA's?"

Then proceed like that.  Its helping me anyways.

So much of this depends on the dynamic between hero and villain.

I'd have recommended bet/bet/bet if you have been active and let a Q station you.

As played I check call the river.  Pretty sure he bets a Q for value and it also gives him enough rope to have a stab without.

Thx for feedback and it seems bet, bet, bet is best here with just Simon and myself on this line, I was b/f this river 100% but the villain flatted the 18k otr with  Ahrt Qh to scoop

Didn't know the outcome of this hand when I done my post but seems I made a good read ;-)
I still think your line is good Rich, could go a bit bigger with both turn raise and river bet. I'm not sure how ppl can say bet, bet, bet is only option here. Don't get me wrong me wrong I would take this line too when the stacks are shallow enough to bet, bet, shove. Also I would do the same vs someone I perceive to be very good but when you are this deep I think it's a good spot to c/r and win a big pot rather than a smallish one with B,B,B line.
Most live players are heroes who don't like to fold top pair, like this hand for example. Ok he won't always have AQ here but the other hands he has are 10J, KJ, PP's (although less likely to call with these when u have opened UTG and c bet into 2 players) and random floats. All of these hands bet the turn when checked to, so even if he doesn't have a hand that can't call a c/r u get value from all his floats.
FWIW I think you played the hand well vs this villain and won yourself a much bigger pot than you would have if you simpy bet, bet, bet.

Cheers Simon but he had AQhh and we lost the pot  :(   thx for the vote of confidence though  ;)

Take back everything I said and fold flop :-) lol.
No that's fine same applies, he's still calling river on no heart, so you've played hand well just got a bad river.
