Title: Greg Raymer on a hot streak
Post by: Tal on October 25, 2012, 09:28:20 AM
Just seen the Fossilman has been tearing up the Heartland Poker Tour (me neither) in the States for the last few months:

http://pokerdb.thehendonmob.com/player.php?a=r&n=7955

All three figure fields and taking three firsts for $275k combined is pretty sick.

Conclusion: the man can play? Or the man can play against non-elite fields?

He was sat two to my left at the WSOP this year.  Maybe he ran hot, but he was a lot better than I expected, and gave me a very difficult time.  I was really glad when he got busted in an AK vs AA cold deck.  Even then he seemed very close to making a very difficult fold, and I didn't think he was hollywooding at all.

Non-elite fields = live tournament ;)

I like the fella, no idea how he's adapted his game tekkers over the years - just hope he's moved on from the white socks and sandals.

wtf  you know he was a regular poster on 2+2 from the late 90s when poker was just starting to take off?  Why wouldn't he be good?

ya the whole point was when he went deep, he steam rollered the field with big stack play and heatering. he was one of the 'aggro kids' back then!

I said he was a lot better than I expected, not that I expected that he was going to be bad.  There is a big difference between the two statements.

I expected him to be decent, but not nearly as good as the very best MTT players today.  I checked his OPR and Hendon Mob on the day and there was nothing that would have lead to me believe that he was still crushing at the time.

http://www.officialpokerrankings.com/pokerstars/FossilMan/poker/statistics/9E6CAF5CCF5D4C6DB030B5AF214733E5.html?t=8&scp=558

http://pokerdb.thehendonmob.com/player.php?a=r&n=7955

There was absolutely nothing derogatory in my post, so there was absolutely no need to begin your post wtf.

I am not suprised he has won these three tournaments.

I played him in July 2012 before anyone points out all the Heartland poker tour victories in his Hendon Mob!

I said he was a lot better than I expected, not that I expected that he was going to be bad.

Maybe I should get out more, but in my experience the phrase "a lot better than expected" is very rarely used in the context of someone being expected to be good but in fact being excellent.

Maybe you should just take my word for it and move on?

I know who he is, know his history, knew he used to post on 2 plus 2, had my phone with me and the chiptick password so could check his stats.  I am not an inexperienced poker player, so didn't expect him to be rubbish.  Could you please stop insuating I am a liar and an imbecile.

Thanks

chill pill time for you

Don't see where I'm insinuating you are either of these.  imo you used language that implied you expected him to play poorly which is why I responded.

I've found out what's happened.

From the live updates:

Rayner opens to 40,000 and takes the pot. As he does so, he tells his tablemates (in a slightly Caribbean-come-London accent) "don't mess wiv da fossilman! I kill dem!!" to the confusion of those around him.

He stands up and unmasks himself to an astonished crowd.

Yep, that explains it.

Hand #97 – Greg Raymer Win For the Fourth Time
Level 26 – 60,000/120,000/10,000
November 19, 2012 @ 7:35 pm by Michael Reed
Greg Raymer raises to 240,000, Jacob Bazeley moves all-in. Raymer calls. Bazeley , Raymer has .

The board runs out   .

Bazeley is eliminated in second place winning $59,706 and once again Greg Raymer wins taking home his fourth title of the season winning $106,029.

From what I gather, its like a US version of the GUKPT. Raymer had twice the POTY points than anyone else lol. What an absolute boss

I mean not quite right. Its a very strange deal but imagine if he played $500ks worth of events. He doesn't receive an effective 1.66 markup then, if I've read it correctly. Doesn't look very profitable.

Title: Re: Greg Raymer on a hot streak
Post by: SuuPRlim on January 16, 2014, 01:32:08 PM
the mark-up is 1.66 but given that losses are made up it's not a straight 1.66 mark up - if i sell at 1.66 for a gukpt and brick, then sell for the next one at 1.66 and cash you don't get your money back from the first GUKPT etc, whereas you would here.

It's a pretty terrible deal, he wants to play $100,000 worth of poker putting up $20,000 and getting 52% of the action. MMM.

That's $20,000 more than the majority of the poker world who play $100ks worth of tournaments pull up

Title: Re: Greg Raymer on a hot streak
Post by: SuuPRlim on January 16, 2014, 03:59:48 PM
yes I agree Dave, however he said if the roll gets to 200k then he will play the 50k at the WSOP etc so if its going to be aggressive high stakes managing of the roll then it's a fairly vague and un-restricted offer which is kinda hidden behind fancy wording. You have to cut the figures down to see whats actually going on and I always think that is a bit shady...

However it's better than most of the offers on 2+2 where people who've come 4th in the $8r wnt to sell HS MTT packages at 1.28 etc

I like Greg Raymer

he specifically said this in response to someone asking him to be less vague about what he'd play lol

Quote
I would only play in tournaments and cash games that were appropriate for the bankroll at that moment. For example, if the bankroll is in the ballpark of 100K, even up to 200K or more, I would not enter the 50K Player's Championship at the WSOP this summer. But if I had already hit some big wins by that time, and the bankroll were large enough, then I would enter such an event
