Title: You're the tournament director
Post by: nirvana on October 27, 2012, 01:28:19 PM
Interesting spot came up at a local comp tonight and I'd be interested in some views really as it affected my game and I eventually went out 6th when I think I might have done better.

We're on the money bubble, 6 handed and it folds to me on the button with blinds at 3000-6000, R/A 500. The SB is widely regarded as the best player in the card room, talks a lot, has already had a couple of warnings during the tourn (think he called someone a 'cock' early in proceedings and it nearly kicked off !). His also appears to be well in with the cardroom staff. BB is a solid girl player, charming and pretty deece. Anyway, I make a standard 5 x raise with AKh and both blinds pass. Yessssss ! I give it a little chirp.

Anyway, all this is standard but it's what happened next. I turned to get some applause from my rail at my play and as I turned back the SB was turning over my cards which were over the muck line. Never mind he can definitely outplay me, now his gathered extra info by seeing what I'm raising with !!!!!!!

TBF, I was fuming so much I actually started crying a bit and called over the TD to get some input. By now, it was quite difficult for me to speak and I was hyper ventilating a bit so I let the dealer explain what had happened. The story goes down and some players from the big DC game came over to see what the commotion was. I heard them saying things like 'so that's allowed here now ?', 'fkn wanker', 'seen him do this before' so I fully expected to see the TD put her sandal down and mete out a stiff one.

Instead, she says to the guy in a kind of 'haha, it's just banter' way. 'Stop it now', she sayed it one of those fake stern voices which everyone knows is just not taking it as seriously as I did and so many others in the room. The player, who could win this easily without resorting to such antics, just sayed he was 'sorry' in a goofy kind of way.

Anyway, my simple question is - if another, let's call him, 'player' , flips over your cards - what should the penalty be ? I thought a ban for a level, or an orbit at least. I feel if he had been out of the way, as he should have been, I could have made it to top 5 and done a deal... this is a lot better than 6th

TIA for any input

The most heinous of crimes in local comp. But if event has live stream he just speeding up the process.

Seriously though Glenn, I think DTD have a decent ruling in these instances.  I've been 'said' player in the past and I've received a 'round penalty' - because I'm familiar with the staff and they know me by name, and they know I know that they know that I know... and so on - the rules!

I tried to claim 'an accident' and the TD at the time paid me a compliment by saying "don't be ridiculous, we both know you'd never make that mistake."

So I reckon a minimum 1 orbit penalty, 1 level is too much.  However it would be with a view to disqualification if a second problem occurred.  Which in this case, could possibly be argued for since he's already been 'warned' and chastised (spelling?) earlier in the night.

Minimum for me since I'm not afraid to shout my mouth off would be to have insisted the tournament immediately stop and that the cardroom manager deal with it in an appropriate manner, if I was not satisfied I would insist on seeing the actual written rules for the game in play and then call out the Casino manager to discuss said rules.

I don't care if its a £100k comp or £10 fo - rules is rules.

But I'm probably in the minority here.. been told I'm 'scummy' due to my rules strictness in the past.

WTF why are you 5 x'ing, howdeep were you?

Also why are you crying how big a comp was it? sounds like a small one, although he is clearly out of line surely its not big enough to actually care? if it is then maybe you shouldnt play it....

This really is not the point.

He's not allowed to be a **** on a B road in a car just because its not the M1.    (little drastic obv but I've been reading Honeybadger's posts a lot recently :P)

This is clearly a 'reg problem' that needs to be stamped out at this location.  It's unfortunately too common all over for the regs to get the ability to get away with anything they want.  I know that I've been this person to get away with all sorts in the past, and tbh its not fair.

Minimum of 1 or 2 round penalty for a first offence.

Disqualification for a 2nd offence.

honestly... the dealer is not doing their job properly, and the player should know, especially with being chummy that this is way OOL,

just have to get a peek at his next time! ;)

I cant believe that anyone would do this in the biggest comp of the week, at least no1 from this forum would do something like that.

Name and shame them Glen imo. TD should of comped you a glass of red to calm you down.

Disqualification for a 2nd offence.

Agree with this, but still think it depends on how big a comp it is?

I do agree its very douchey and he should be punished but i still think its relevant what the buy in is? etc if its a £30 comp then altho they should still be punished, tis not the end of the world :)

completely disagree with above the rules are the same whatever the buyin, the hand rankings dont change so why should rules, people will never learn about moving up to better games if they think they can just do what they want.
1 local casino i play they are murder for it (breaking rules not picking up dead cards) inbreds imo

If it's best player in cardroom, then it's obviously Celtic, so just punch him & get on with it.

Is there a card room small enough for this to be true?

Some good points here, but I think the 5 x is spot on with AK cause it's pretty much only Ace high so we don't want to get a call from 78 and that.

Anyway, this is not hand analysis really, it's all about the penalty. What is reasonable ?

Jim, sorry, I can't name and shame. I'm fumming, but I'm bigger than that

Lol at Dewi, btw..if it was Celtic, I could forgive his chubby little face

Up in Manchester there is a guy called Abid who used to do this all the time. The more his opponent kicked up a fuss the funnier the situation got. I even saw him do it in the irish winter festival a couple of years ago. Very first hand of the tourney lol.
.

Of course it's wrong but you should have spat your dummy out good and proper and got him a penalty :)

Warning and a stern telling off, next time he does it is a 3 hand penalty

Dealer should bring on the hand as soon as it is passed over the line to avoid this hapenning anyway

Typical girlie rubbish by the great big Jessie jam tart from Tring.

Lol luther, when you are in a boulangerie, do not finger the pastries - little lesson my parents instilled in me

Surprised more people aren't fulminating against the card flipping douchebag tbh

There's only one solution to ensuring people don't do this. It's an old school method involving a couple of big burly men and a hammer.

Nice whooshing of everyone and their dog, though.

5x deffo isn't standard.

Usually 3x with my marginal hands like JJ, QQ and 5x with the top of my range. Reasonable, no ?

Played locally tonight player 3x utg with AA bb calls with 73. 73j flop they get it in (80bbs)
and BB and several others then berate him for his 3x open. Fun times.

AA guy flips them over proud as punch on the flop im like "they are no good".

Raise same with JJ,QQ,KK,AA, AK, AQ watev... 5 is way too big always, 3.5 x at most i would say and thats when your deep. Early on its not too bad but after first few levels its a leak to be  4-5 x unless its very special occasions lol. Usually 3 x is too big but ok if standard and deep enough
