Title: Getting into Live Tournaments in 2013 - Advice on What to Play
Post by: VBlue on November 19, 2012, 11:14:15 AM
I play online MTTs and a little cash, but have some reasoning to try and get more into the UK live scene next year:

  • it can be a lot of fun
  • the opportunity of a big score
  • I want to keep pushing myself and trying myself against better competition and this is an opportunity to see how I measure up in these games
  • I don't have a huge social life as I am busy being a Dad and playing online poker so it keeps things varied for me

there are a few things that I could consider disadvantages:

  • online MTTs are a lot more convenient to play and I enjoy online poker immensely
  • live poker  can be expensive - I live an hour from my nearest casino in Blackpool, so don't have a local

I wonder if it is worth the bother, but I know the cash games can be very beatable, so that adds another opportunity to make a trip profitable.

I have played small-stakes pub poker and local live tourneys up to 100 runners and am a winning player in both.  I know I can beat a standard £50 local casino game too.  I am currently working on both my poker game through an online coaching course and my mental game through some other means and am bearing fruits from both.

I don't have a very big bankroll at the moment, so I am looking for satellite opportunities for most events over £100/£200 including travel pacages for any larger UK tour events.

I am thinking Genting/APAT/GUKPT/UKIPT events.  I believe that some of the casinos run smaller events - Summer Series and that kind of thing.

Can anyone point me in the direction of schedules or recommend any events for a Northerner to look for in 2013?

What do you all think of live v online?  Which do you prefer and why?  What gets you of your ass and out the door to play live?

And hi to blondepoker.  I hadn't realised this was my first post.  I thought it was likely I had posted before, but seems not.

Il ive other end of the country so couldnt tell you what there is up there, but im sure many on here will.

If you play (and are good at) online MTTs then play sats for live events.

All those tours you mentioned, plus the bigger tourneys at DTD, can be qualified for online.

However, live poker does entail having to spend time in close proximity to live poker players - this is the big advantage of online.

Don't think most 2013 schedules are up tbh.

DtD monthly deepstack would be my recomendation (depends where you live tho') as they have online supersats for each one with daily feeders.

THM Database will give you all UK festivals/major events monthly

The filters will help you narrow it down by month and country, and all major proviuders give their schedules to Joe and the team

eg

Thanks to all and too Tighty especially for pointing me at THM page for listed events.

I'll look out again at the start of 2013 and make a plan.  Will also refer to local casino websites.

I've never played sats before really, so will have to get into some strategy for them.

Would like to try DtD sometime - I live in Kendal, Cumbria.

My online MTT game is decent at the $5/$10 levels I play at and is improving.

Hey Blue

Welcome to the forum

Personally i flutter between the 2, up to early last year i hadn't played live at all! But since have been more regular live to online, but my local cardroom is only 25 mins top so it is more convinient and social.

I would say get out there a bit more and if your enjoying live and/or doing ok then play a bit more if possible. If your looking for a big score your more likely to get it online tbh

As others have said try to sat online for those bigger buyins, the whole experience if you get into one will be massive and can only help.

Best of luck

Is it also ok to point him at ww.ukpokercalendar.com that also contains details on major festivals and how to qualify? :)

Also my home town! Though have the privilege of being a local to DTD now. Perhaps we know of each other? Can I ask how old you are mate? I'm 27

Have realised this sounds like some creepy Internet dating, but am going to stick with it :)

ruud - ha.  I am 36 years old.  When did you leave Kendal?

jj - agreed.  I will recall a hilarious cash hand.  I picked up Aces and had only played one hand prior and won a small pot with JJ v A-rag.   It was a limped pot with about £7 in at 50p/£1 and I wanted to make the raise about 1.5x pot so counted out £7 and thought to add £5 more (very loose-passive table).

After putting the £12 to one-side and with tiredness setting in, I then counted £12 for a pot-sized bet and £8 more for the extra half and a bit (repeating the process) and made it £32 to go!  The seat to my left from the blinds made it all-in for about £57 and got 2 callers for amounts in the £30-£40 range.  I called and beat KK v 54s v KQo for a pot in the region of £120 profit.

ruud - I used to run the George & Dragon and Heron games in Kendal.  You might know me from there?
