Title: Why do we all play poker? Post by: Pockket on November 26, 2012, 01:31:26 PM Hey guys and girls,
I'm having to do this object of desire thing for uni so naturally I've chosen poker. I'm looking for why you think people gamble and the appeal of it and in particular why poker is such an addictive game. Any feedback from people would be much appreciative as even though I have my own ideas, I'll get extra points if I can get a thread going on. Thanks Title: Re: Why do we all play poker? Post by: Foxy-86 on November 26, 2012, 01:42:13 PM I ask myself the same question every day lol.... I could say, meeting new people, banter at the table, the intricacies of the game.... Nah, who am I trying to kid...it's the thrill of binking a big one!
Gl with the thread Title: Re: Why do we all play poker? Post by: kinboshi on November 26, 2012, 05:39:47 PM Have you got a questionnaire for people to complete - you might be able to get more meaningful feedback that way?
Don't know about others, but I play poker because it's a good challenge, and it's a hobby that I can play and make money at (which can't be bad). If I was constantly losing (rather than just some of the time), then I'd be giving up and finding something else to do with my poker time. Title: Re: Why do we all play poker? Post by: DaveShoelace on November 26, 2012, 05:49:19 PM I was always dog shit at sports at school, so when poker came along and it allowed me to 'beat' other people in a genuine form of competition, that was the appeal. Although poker is not a sport, it kinda felt like one, at least to someone who is terrible at sport.

Title: Re: Why do we all play poker? Post by: Skgv on November 26, 2012, 05:54:33 PM Thought it would be an easier way to support my family than running my own buisness trusting others to do there jobs an care about it like I'd care about it. As when you are the boss no one cares more than you an having to rely on others can be let down so me finding poker helped me find a form of making money where I needed no one but myself to trust.

Good point I was the same ,the idea of sitting on my arse "competing"is great ,or just sitting there in my case Title: Re: Why do we all play poker? Post by: rfgqqabc on November 26, 2012, 06:13:38 PM The only way i could own souls like in poker in another world would be to become the grim reapers apprentice.
Competition basically. Title: Re: Why do we all play poker? Post by: BorntoBubble on November 27, 2012, 08:29:14 PM Poker - I play for enjoyment, the chance of a bink, and the social side of the game have met many really top people in my life through poker and that is a good thing for me. Also brought me closer to my dad as we both shared an interest in the game and can happily trip down to the casino together we finished 4th and 6th in Super 50 this weekend and this brought me some of my happiest moments in poker had a great night!
What also interests me is why do other people gamble. Some of the richest, cleverest people in the world still love a gamble and i mean a proper gamble. I wonder why. I imagine its the buzz and tbh its probably better then drugs smoking and alcohol for you! but not much! Title: Re: Why do we all play poker? That's pretty much why I play poker Title: Re: Why do we all play poker? Post by: MintTrav on November 27, 2012, 11:53:45 PM I play to meet girls.

Post by: Gemini Kings on December 07, 2012, 07:03:03 AM Poker is unique in that anyone can be successful in the short and medium term regardless of their level of skill. It's a game where you can hit the ground running then learn as you go.
You can learn the rules sit down and play for real money immediately and with luck on your side you can win. As a beginner : You could not walk onto a tennis court with a top professional and win. You could not enter a championship golf tournament and win. You could not enter the snooker world championships and win etc etc. But you can enter a poker tournament and beat some of the best poker players in the world with a little luck on your side and I believe that is a major reason why it is so popular. In poker Lady Luck is a great leveller. If its on your side you can clean up. If it's not then can will lose regardless of how well you play. Therefore although poker is a game of skill it also involves a large amount of luck which means there is a large element of gambling in poker. That said when I play I don't consider it purely gambling. Because using the correct decision making and playing as near to optimal as you can in any given hand should result in success over the medium to long term if not in short term. True gambling such as roulette or blackjack is the opposite in that the statistical advantage though small is with the house. Therefore the vast majority will lose in the long term regardless of how they play ( unless they can card count in blackjack). Why is it addictive? The thrill of winning is addictive. Even losing players will win some pots and experience that thrill. Poker is competitive. It involves pitting your wits against your opponents. It involves risk taking which comes natural to the male gender which may explain why there are more male poker players than female playing. These are just a few of my thoughts on the game. Good luck with your project |
