Title: WTF is that?
Post by: kinboshi on December 09, 2012, 08:35:26 PM
Thought I'd turn to the blonde hive-mind for some help about this...thing:

Anyone have a clue what that is?  It was in a lot of stuff Lyndsey got in an auction yesterday of stuff that was previously in a doll museum.  I think it was in with some coronation and other royal family related stuff, but it just looks like some freaky doll thing.  It has some pins with it that suggest it was worn as a badge/brooch. Any ideas?

:dontask:

Looks like some kind of voodoo smurf.

Whatever it is I'd be leaving it outside.

Some might say it's an initialism.

It's a voodoo doll Kin.

We thought that to start with, so you reckon the red, white and blue is a coincidence or would it be for anti-royalist voodooist?

I'll post some pics of some of the other stuff that was in the lots.  Lyndsey hadn't realised quite how much stuff she was getting, as the photos on the website for the lots only showed some of the items - and when she went to pick it up, they asked her where her van was! :D

Stuff like tins, pots, and bottles.  Some of the stuff is nearly as old as tikay.

I expect the red, white and blue is more likely to be American Dutch than British - what material is it made from?

It could be related to the US I guess, maybe it being amongst the coronation stuff is a red (white and blue) herring.

I believe it is a Haitian Voodoo Doll from the days of President "Papa Doc" Chevalier when such items were sold as tourist paraphenalia, with a nod towards the anti-imperialist agenda espoused by Papa Doc notably the United States under Nixon

Sw similar when I travelled in the region in the late 80s

So maybe some unholy offspring from a brief encounter between a voodoo doll and a Britannia doll?  :D

Quite a few tins and boxes in the collection, including a 'nosegay' tin (tobacco apparently)??

Looks like it's not worth a fortune, although the collection might make a few quid.

More pics?

There's loads of stuff, and will get some photos (might be advisable for Lyndsey to take them :D) of the interesting stuff.  A lot of it isn't for resale, they're just vintage items that Lyndsey uses in photo shoots - but because there's so much stuff, I think we'll try and sell some and get some of the cost back at least.

I'll see if there's a photo of the potions and pills from yesteryear - they're fascinating...

There's loads more too.  I'll take a photo of a small bottle of 'poison' that's in the collection.  Looks like something out of a Sherlock Holmes story.

Is Lyndsey interested in antiques in general?

How did she hear of this lot in the first place?

Only for props for he photo shoots, as well as a general interest in cool vintage stuff for the house.

One of her clients lives near the museum (in Newark, I think) and she told Lyndsey about it.  It's the first time we'd done anything like this, but was great fun and will be doing it again.  Lyndsey's mum lives in France and buys all sorts of stuff over there, such as copper pans for a tenner that she then sells online to people in the UK and America for hundreds of pounds. With a lot of the stuff it depends where you sell it.  Put it on ebay, and you tend to get little for it, but put it on Etsy or other similar sites and people seem willing to pay a premium for it.

I'm told the copper pots are likely old pub measures from the days when customers brought in their own drinking vessels and the pub would measure their drink and then pour it into their tankard. I've also been told to put the guy who identified them in touch with you if you do want to sell them. Pub antiques could fetch a  decent sum - there's always a boozer looking for the antique pub stuff - usually to make a freshly renovated boozer look old.

Lyndsey loves those copper measuring jugs - so they're not for sale.  Got loads of other copper stuff though, and some of that will be sold on.  Will post pics soon.

I don't blame her - they're great looking. All pic appreciated - I enjoy looking through stuff like this. Miss Tonji's picture detective threads - had some real fun with them.

I only found out the other day that you can still get laudanum on prescription - but from the sounds of it other forms of opiate are definitely preferable

Oh happy memories Rod.

Yeah Kin, get some more of these up. The ceramic jars go for £15-20. For the Keiller and Sons jars. Would help to put up some items with any dates/markings. It's great searching the net to find relevant info.

The old medicine bottles and pharmacy tins etc, there are many small museums around the country that will happily purchase stuff like that.

Some of the old coloured bottles can fetch a decent price, especially with the more hazardous labels.

I'm hooked on all the antique programmes on TV and love trying to guess the values.

As Rod suggest, makings of an immense thread "Kinboshi's Antiques Marathon" anyone?

Geo

Lots of ceramic jars - will post up some pics when we can wade through the boxes of stuff.  Doubt there's anything too valuable in them, but probably the odd thing here or there that'll sell for £20-30 and help us get some of the money back as a bonus.

Lyndsey's selling some of the tins from the boxes full she got in the auction tonight via Facebook. http://www.sorbetdesign.co.uk/2012/12/vintage-props-for-sale/

Nothing valuable, just some old tins. Doubt anyone's interested, but thought I'd post it up nevertheless.

A mile from my house and just off the A1 is the antique doll museum at Cromwell. Someone in there might help you ID the ugly little troll...  Once she says "its Jason Herbert" show her your doll too

None left unfortunately.  Someone running around with very pure blood, joints feeling great and beautiful breath.
