Title: Places to stay in London town for pokerz..
Post by: jgcblack on December 16, 2012, 09:35:43 AM
The title pretty much says it all..

Im looking for suggestions/ ideas for places to stay or crash over when in the big city, that doesn't involve me checking in, sleeping for a few hours and wasting the included breakfast or spare bed etc over a couple of days...

Previously I've stayed in my car (too cold), a nice hotel £90+/night, and a cheaper hotel £60ish inc breaky...

Im not sure I love the idea of hostels when its so cold atm, but I also dont want to spending the earth on a hotel room. I just want to be able to get to the Vic, Empire, Hippo, and potentially the palm without a 2 hour drive home up the M1.

Help?

If you or a family member ever served then check out the VSC just off the Edgeware Road 1 min from the vic. Very pleasant and obv run for members.

He served at tennis, according to his diary. Does that count?

What's a VSC?

I'll ignore Jason for the moment.

London needs some Tokyo style capsule hotels imo, its just too expensive in the centre when you just want a bed.

Found this place in the planning the other week when doing a random search could be good it they keep it below 50 quid a night.

Dunno if this helps but I spoke to vic staff on twitter and they said try hotels/B&Bs along 'Sussex Gardens'. There's also a new 'Tune Hotel' that's close to Paddington.

Didn't end up going but you're more than welcome to check them out.

Yeah plenty of B+B's on sussex gardens for around 50ish I often stay in those if I'm on my own dime. They are pretty basic, but if you just need a bed they are ok.

If you stay in Sussex Gardens make sure you check out the reviews first as a couple of them are pretty ropey. I would also recommend using the name your own price thing on priceline which has always served me well.  Massive +1 to Woodseys comment about the capsule hotels.  I often use the one at Gatwick and Heathrow if I need some kip after an overnight flight and they fit the bill perfectly and are fairly good value.

Stands for victory services club, for forces persons and their families. Also good for sharing they have some big rooms with 3 single beds for example. But if prev posts are correct you may not be eligible!

As said, there's lots of cheapish hotels near The Vic.
I would use :

http://www.trivago.co.uk/   .... search London....then narrow it down to Hyde Park/within a mile.

Also

http://www.laterooms.com/  .....searching The Vic postcode W2 2DT

Ok ish hotels for £45/50.......if you dont go down the hostel route.

My mate uses name your price site and he gets some right proper decent deals in 4/5 * hotels and pays less than £90 because that's what he puts as max spend when doing the search.

All sounds good, the more info the better...

It will be priceline he is referring to. I have used it a lot in the US and got some absolute bargins.

Hotwire is good as well but there is no bidding process.

With both the main disadvantage is that you don't know what exact hotel you are going to get just the star rating and area.

Well its great I have some options.. Just need some grinders who want to go to London for 2-3 days to rip up some cash games.

They generally have £1/1 and £1/2 24/7 but also have 1/3, 2/5, and bigger most of the time between 4pm- 4am.

Kinda fancy going down the empire, and having a break watching a show or two if im doing well enough and need a break...
Last time i was down that way, there were plenty of adverts for some comedy shows... Surely an hour or so of that would be an ideal relaxant.

Depends what your min standards are I guess, if you want at least a 3 star hotel then you are right. But if you don't mind basic b+b type places there are lots, I accept many will turn their noses up at those though.

Stayed here a few times, it's opposite holland park tube station and has free on site parking. Basic Single 45, if you can share with mates its cheaper in double, triple, quad rooms etc.

I'd agree with that too.

There are a few bargains around that figure on www.laterooms.com sometimes.

Think that's the one.., he says for 4* just put £55 and see what you get.

Here are some tips on using the site. We have stayed in some real nice hotels for peanuts

Jason u r mad ...

What area are u in Jon?

Try some b n b's near hammer smith or Croydon, all about 20 minutes from central... Or just do the whole 72 hour grind like they use to do back in the day 😉

I'm in MK, I've done the long grind before Dreenie but last time I fell asleep at the wheel, went into the car in front at 85mph on the M1 going north - managed to spin backwards into the fast lane and then get control and across to the hard shoulder before I died.  Not a scratch on me and that kinda run good isn't going to be tested again.

I've done Shenfield > London Liverpool > Tube to Leicester Square before. Not ideal but works well if you can plan sessions to finish after normal time. About 35 mins total journey. BB in Shenfield like £30 a night.

P.s, be aware on train late/early on regarding muggings, just a precaution.

yeah bit mad Steve. The guy who told me about those sites is proper loaded and when I told him it was £69 to London on the train for the GPS a couple of week ago he told me about the Mega bus. Its less than £5, picks you up at Tesco Scunthorpe, takes you part of the way to London and then you get on the train. All for £5 return... How does that work?

Posted on here 2or 3 years ago but it got deleted about hotels that offered rooms  say from 8am to 4pm 10 to 6 and so on .I thought at the time that would be really good for players staggering out on to Harrowby street at 6am who did not wish to check in somewhere they were only going to use for a couple of hours.
I think it was deleted as the mods thought it was advertising .Obviously they have never finished a long session and paid the day before for a room.
