Title: 6-max PLO8 micro stakes cash hand
Post by: Evilpengwinz on December 26, 2012, 11:25:28 PM
Would like some feedback on this PLO8 hand, please. I'm a PLO8 fish but looking to improve, so if I've played this terribly let me know.

I usually play on Sky Poker, it's quite rare for a PLO8 cash game to run on there but somebody managed to get a 5p/10p game started so I joined in.

Reads on villians:

Villain 1 has only just joined the table, have never played him before. Table limits are 30bb minimum, 100bb maximum. The "default" amount to sit with is 80bb. Villain 1 sat down with 80bb, so I'm immediately expecting this player is quite fishy for that reason.
Villain 2 is one of the weaker PLO8 regs on the site - Have seen him calling only hoping to win half of the pot and getting quartered in the past in SnG's.

Stack sizes at start of hand:
Hero: £11.01
Villain 1: £9.40
Villain 2: £9.04

UTG folds. Villain 1 limps from the hijack. I raise to 40p with Aspades 4s Qc 7c
Button and SB fold, Villain 2 calls from BB, and so does villain 1. Pot is £1.25

Flop: Ts 8s 6c

Flop gives me nut flush draw, backdoor flush draw, and a fairly weak low draw, as well as some other backdoor and non-nut draws. Both villains check, I bet £1, and both villains call. Pot is £4.25

Turn: Ahrt

Turn gives me a pair and a rubbish low (8s 7c 6c 4s Ahrt). Both villains check, and I check, hoping to see a spade or get to showdown for free and my pair of Aces or awful low hand might be good enough for half of the pot. At this point, I don't plan to put any more money in the pot unless I hit a spade on the river.

River: 6s

I get the spade that I was looking for, except it's paired the board. Sigh. Villain 2 bets pot (£4.25), and Villain 1 calls. What should I do here?

I called, which I think in hindsight is worst of the 3 options, as I think I should either be folding if I think I'm behind to a FH (Not even thinking about the low pot as even though I have a low hand it'll take a miracle for me to win that half of the pot), or raising for value because both villains only have around £3.50-£4 left so don't think they'd ever call £4.25 then fold for the rest of their stacks.

As I said in opening paragraph, I'm a PLO8 fish, so all feedback welcome :)

Cheers,
Andy.

I think you play this hand profitably over a weak players limp.

Nit-picking but pot the flop 3way, you bet this flop light so infrequently and £1 is the same as £1.25 it isnt as if anyone actually expects you fold when you bet £1 and get it in when you bet £1.25 so you may as well just get as much money as poss in.

River is a fold, very clearly a fold imo.

Turn is actually most interesting for me, it's my weakest game plo8 but i think we have a LOT of FE and weak opponents, problem is though our low cant really improve notably so we can get it in pretty badly. Still in game i'd have been very tempted to just mash the pot button but we might be a £ or so too deep for this not to be spew

fold pre

Why?

I think its gona be pretty hard to win at showdown (to scoop atleast) our hand flops pretty bad on both sides. We basically flop as good as we can with our hand and its still not that good. It might be ok at 10nl but I think playing hands like this is a losing play.

Im no PLO8 player, and when I do play I am a meganit so maybe its just my nitty side shining through.

I wouldn't dream of folding in a tournament when we are shallow and blinds mean more. I imagine we can iso pre here.

We can smash the pot here heads up for sure and I wouldn't say I'd never do it 3ways ott, I'd definitely want a better idea of how people play for this to be true. After all its hard to have a good A2x hand, when X is a low and OP has As

Pre I think is close. However, we don't learn by folding! I'll get a calc out at some point in next few days for a better answer. We flop better than 50% equity ~59% of the time, plus we have the betting lead and position. This fails to factor in the likelihood we get peeled by a third person, but we still have position. This is vs top 30% of hands, this could easily be too loose/tight, but wont be terrible. Even vs top 20% its just about fine purely equity wise.

River is a fold esp when potted. If it went 3$ and a call I may find a way to convince myself but i doubt thats too true in any bigger games.

P.S if we are losing with this hand on the button in any PLO8 game when someone limps we need to be quitting the game (the one we are in).

Easy fold for me on the river but I probably pot the turn after all that weakness.

Happy with the raise pre.

Morning Tom,

You walked right into Celtic's uncharacteristically cunning trap......

His subtle point was "fold pre" is not exactly "analysis", the OP needs to know "why"?

Which you then beautifully explained. ;)

Morning Andy,

You've set that Post out beautifully, thanks.

The river, for me, is very much a fold, at the very best we are getting half, & only if we are lucky.

Really, I think this boils down to hand-selection pre-flop, & the flop.

We want scoops, not half pots, & we get ourselves in so much trouble, so many times, chasing half the pot with marginal hands.

I don't have a great view on the hand as played, but I think you'd up your win-rate at PLO8 by being MUCH more selective pre-flop, & not chasing when you half-hit iffy flops.

Patience, position & hand selection are key in this particular dynamic, & you can win a good few bob by using those criteria.

I also think you MUST remember that PLO8 plays out MUCH differently to Texas, so leave those bluffs at home, they rarely work in 8 or better.

My default is to ideally look for HIGH hands first. In PLO8, anyone & everyone with A-2 thinks they have the nut starting hand. They don't - they usually only have a chance of half the pot.

Hope you are well, & Xmas was good.

I'd usually over-limp this hand. I very rarely over-limp at NLHE, but it is much more reasonable at PLO8.

Thanks for the feedback everyone - Got lucky and binked half the pot on this occasion but won't be calling for half the pot next time.

Morning Andy,

You've set that Post out beautifully, thanks.

Hope you are well, & Xmas was good.

Thanks - Reading the sticky ftw :)

I got invited to somebody's house, only to find out a couple of hours later that their entire household had tonsillitis. I know Xmas is the time for giving and all that, but would rather they'd kept that to themselves, lol. Got over it fairly quickly though, and apart from that, Xmas was good. Also had a decent cash in Thursday's main event on Sky, final table bubble of UKOPS 1 for about £1.2k including bounties. Overall, not a bad week :)
