Title: Thailand Post by: Biddy 62 on January 06, 2013, 03:14:27 PM Visiting Thailand with the Mrs in April, staying 3 night in Bangkok then hiring a car for 10 days. Where to go what to see? Nice hotels around the £50 mark.

Title: Re: Thailand Post by: Graham C on January 06, 2013, 03:36:44 PM Can't say driving in Bangkok would be high on my places to drive, buses are cheap as chips.
Kanchanaburi is only a couple of hours out (Bridge on the River Kwai fame) and is a nice area to visit. Lots of lovely places in Thailand. Title: Re: Thailand Post by: jgcblack on January 06, 2013, 04:01:39 PM Depends what kind of traveling you're doing..? ive only backpacked Thailand and so I went trekking in the jungle or to some 'amusing' things like bungee jumping, gun ranges, snake farms etc.
I went north to 'Changmai' but that's not a drive for you, night train it! other than that, beaches? Islands? Cocktails? Go south! Title: Re: Thailand Post by: Woodsey on January 06, 2013, 04:46:46 PM What are your interests? U want beaches or cultural stuff?
Like Silo said a car in Bangkok will be anabsolute nightmare don't bother. U just wanna stay around Bangkok or mooch around more? Title: Re: Thailand Post by: Woodsey on January 06, 2013, 04:47:02 PM Title: Re: Thailand Post by: claypole on January 06, 2013, 04:50:51 PM I wouldn't get a car - hop on an air Asia flight either north or south - north for Chang Mai if its the jungles, trekking, cooling type stuff and markets - or just fly into Phuket - avoid Patong and get out to Koh Lanta, Phi Phi etc. I don't like the car option much
Title: Re: Thailand Post by: anthonyl on January 06, 2013, 04:50:59 PM Haha bangkok with a car good luck. Went to Thailand in September.
Chiang Mai is fucking AWESOME. 2 day treks, staying with locals in their homes, no electricity and all that, chiang mai 'long necks', day with tigers, whole day elephant trekking, decent night markets too. BKK is good for 2 days at most. Title: Re: Thailand Post by: Woodsey on January 06, 2013, 04:52:43 PM I wouldn't get a car - hop on an air Asia flight either north or south - north for Chang Mai if its the jungles, trekking, cooling type stuff and markets - or just fly into Phuket - avoid Patong and get out to Koh Lanta, Phi Phi etc. I don't like the car option much What's Koh Lanta like mate? Looking at that for my next trip... Looking at that for my next trip... Its nice mate. i like it. much more chilled than like Phi Phi etc. I spent 3 days there and had a nice time relaxing after drinking myself into obliv in Phi Phi. Drove around the whole island on a scootay. few ok/nice beaches wit few tourists. Small ish ok ish trek you can do near this lighthouse. Thinks its made up of 2 islands. i only went to one. think the other has more treks n stuff Title: Re: Thailand Post by: claypole on January 06, 2013, 05:29:54 PM Yes, everything Amatay says - I'd imagine its like some of the other Islands were 20 years ago. I just chilled, empty beaches, secluded bungalow on beach and relaxation time. Less tourists, very relaxing

Title: Re: Thailand Post by: Amatay on January 06, 2013, 05:47:14 PM Im thinking of doing a little trip soon.
bkk>pattaya>samet>chang>kood>maak>trat>bkk. anyone been to any of these places before, apart from BKK? Where else is good in Phuket. So far i've been too. Bangkok, Phuket, Phi Phi, Lanta, Railay, Samui, Phangan, Lipe, Udon Thani. Not explored chang mai, rai etc yet Title: Re: Thailand Post by: Woodsey on January 06, 2013, 05:50:56 PM We pick car up from Pattaya, my brother and his Thai Mrs showing us the ropes. Jomtien is probably the best place close to Patts, naklua is ok in the opposite direction, but i'd go with Jomtien, not Really sure about further a field. Never stayed overnight in Jomtien so can't recommend a hotel. Koh Samet and Koh Chang down the coast are supposed to be nice for a few days if you want to get out of Patts/Jomtien with your car, not been myself but plenty of my friends have. Title: Re: Thailand Post by: redarmi on January 06, 2013, 06:44:27 PM Koh Samet is one of my favourite places in the world. It isn't luxurious in terms of accomodation but it is fine and very cheap but it is just as i imagine the islands were before mass tourism. Lovely beach and sea and then fresh seafood at night with a couple of beers sat on the beach. Heavenly and half tempted to book a flight to Thailand now just thinking about it.

Title: Re: Thailand Post by: Graham C on January 06, 2013, 06:47:50 PM Trat as in off the coast to Cambodia, the port to Koh Chang? Spent the night there before heading off to Koh Chang in the morning, it just seemed like a coastal market town to me but then Koh Chang appears to have changed over the years, but it is/was lovely, hardly anything there, beach hut that when the tide came in it was around the hut, amazing, spent nearly 3 weeks there doing nothing. Paid peanuts to stay there then, seems to be pretty pricey now.

(http://oi47.tinypic.com/oi6sns.jpg) (http://oi49.tinypic.com/yjuc9.jpg) We got really smashed up on these one night. Quite alot of weed about in Lanta. Really lax out there :) (http://oi50.tinypic.com/34i1p4o.jpg) Lots of little quiet beaches. This one near lighthouse and small trek through a National Park (http://s8.postimage.org/vk1zlz2t0/IMG_1558.jpg) Will try and find some Lipe pics but didn't take many Title: Re: Thailand Post by: Woodsey on January 06, 2013, 09:04:44 PM Nice, I got a slideshow of my last trip, I'll see if I can upload it.

Think there were two main beaches and a few little ones :) (http://s7.postimage.org/s5020m1kq/image.jpg) Lots of funky little places to sleep, eat, drink and get canned on Lipe too. Bit same same as Lanta in a way. Awesome foam bar there though ;) CM is awesome. Day with elephants cost like £45. Included lunch, riding elephant bareback for couple hours, feeding elephant and washing them. See tigers too, like all diff ages of tigers and they say these are not drugged like the ones in bkk. Long necks was pretty interesting too, and trek. Loads of other things you can do in CM but I only had four nights there. Massive night markets, bangkoks only silver temple, loads of good restaurants and some decent bars. Bkk has a decent road of bars but pretty touristy around super bed club. Title: Re: Thailand Post by: I KNOW IT on January 07, 2013, 02:38:16 AM Pattaya is just a road of sex clubs. I found it very VERY quiet. Literally nothing to do except get massages, drink, read and eat good food. But I got bored pretty quick. Probs what I'm looking for tbh, will have had a week on the piss before that. :) Title: Re: Thailand Post by: ruud on January 09, 2013, 05:20:13 PM No one mentioned Koh Tao? The quieter bits, like Freedom Beach, are lovely. Also like the northern part of Koh Samui, Mae Nam is quite pleasant.
Will see if I can bung some pics up. I love Bangkok by the way. Chatuchak Market is an incred experience. Kanchanaburi is lovely for a day or two to see the River Kwai and just chill. Ate some incredible Massaman Curry at a little restaurant around there. However, my absolute fave is Ayuthayya. Amazing temples and so photogenic. Will have a look through the photos, see what I can find.
