Title: QUIZ - Absolute Blonderdash! - REVEAL MONDAY 8PM
Post by: edgascoigne on January 15, 2013, 08:54:37 AM
Right then....following on from Alex's "If this is the answer, what is the question" quiz of a week or two ago, it looks like it's time for me to pick up the baton and set a quiz myself.

In keeping with the theme of innovation we are going for something slightly different again here. The quiz is...

                                   'Absolute Blonderdash!'

Everybody loves a good cry of "farce" through the reveal of the Blonde quiz....well, now you will have no reason to. You are both respondent and judge!! Here's how it works...

Below are two words, a date, a person/character and a film title. Your job is to proffer as believable a definition as possible for each item...without resorting to cheating/Google of course. You score a point each time one of your answers is 'chosen'. You can also score a point if you select the correct answer from the line-up.

For example.... if the word was "abligurition"....you might enter the definition: "A pressure sore that grows on the glutus maximus". Now, "abligurition" is actually an observation of lavish spending on food and drink, but that's almost irrelevant*....as you score points for the number of entrants that select your answer as their guess as to which definition is 'correct'! Beware...sometimes the definitions are sensible...other times ridiculous!

*It's unlikely (though possible) that you will know the true definition of these items. If you do, good for you, well done, give yourself a pat on the back etc. Keep it to yourself, submit a novel and incorrect definition, and pick up the bonus point for choosing the correct answer from the line up. If you submit an answer too close to the true definition I will give you a nudge to change it by PM ;)

Timeline

15th Jan - Quiz opens for submission of definitions.
22nd Jan - Submission of definitions closes, definitions posted in the thread. Quiz reopens for submission of entrants' guesses.
27th Jan 10pm - Submission of guesses closes.
28th Jan - REVEAL

Right then....enough waffle. Time for the quiz!! Send me your 'answers' by PM with the subject line "Blonderdash". For your submission to be valid, you commit to selecting from the proposed answers of the other entrants between 22nd-28th Jan, otherwise your submission will be null and void.  ;izimbra; In the event of a tiebreak whoever submits their guesses first will be deemed the victor.

1. Palooka

2. 24th March 1951

3. Sylvan Goldman

4. Jamon Jamon (Offer one-two sentences that read like the 'teaser' as to the film's contents from the back of the DVD-box).

5. Karoshi

Good luck!!

I know two, and could make a good guess for a third. But two I have no idea about.

Doesn't really matter though,as it's about creating definitions that people will go for.

Bit harsh on Tighty.

My grandad used to say he was gonna take me to palookaville. So can't wait to find out what that actually means.

Are people allowed to enter phase 2 only?

I'd happily take a guess at the correct definitions and can honestly say that I genuinely don't know the true answer to any of them.

I understand I won't be able to win but my participation may improve the overall competition for those involved in phases 1 and 2.

Can those not wanting to play stage 1 nominate a ghost writer?

Yeah ok, why not. Though obviously the more the merrier for both phases.

:)

It's my fault waffling too much.

1. Write fake definitions for the 5 items and PM to me before the 22nd.
2. Pick which definition you believe to be correct from the list of submitted answers when I post them itt.

I've read the op about 10 times. Makes more sense than a kinboshi hand history, but I still don't get it.glglglgl all.

The basic idea of balderdash is that you have to work out what the definition of a word is. Now the other team has to try and put you off the scent by making up some other possible definitions that sound like they could fit.

Say the word were "Gorilla"

The definition you'd be looking for would be "Giant ape with the latin name gorilla gorilla"

But the opposition might have thrown in a few curve balls:
- A defensive position in the game Kabaddi, similar to a sweeper
- An energetic dance from the South Pacific
- A Mexican style of cooking, similar to a barbeque

Here's where blonderdash comes in.

Your job is in two parts:
1. You need to make up a plausible (ideally wrong) answer for each of the things Ed has given - so what could have but didn't happen on 24 March 1951? - and send one for each to Ed.
2. All the wrong answers and the correct one will be presented together and your job is to identify the correct definition. You will score a point every time someone picks your curve ball wrong answer.

The idea is to come up with a really plausible wrong answer so everyone picks it and then yourself to pick the right answer so you don't give anyone else any points.

Does that help?

If you happen to know the correct answer....don't tell me now. Instead, keep it schtum, submit a made up definition, and snipe off the bonus point for picking the right definition when the time comes.

Right I have just had a phone call from my thick mate. He said this is a bit confusing for some people and I obv put him straight but I thought you might like to make it clearer for everyone else.

My mate thinks that he knows one of the answers. Lets say he knows what a Gorilla is. Why should he put a made up answer instead of the correct one. Lets assume as Tighty knows everything he answers the correct definition, all the super brains go for tighty's definition to as well as Kinboshi who googled it then he gets mega points? My mate is left with egg on his face because he answered " the part of the cooker you use for making cheese on toast" and no one went with his answer.

Cheers for clearing this up for him.

Because anyone who submits a 'correct' answer gets a gentle reminder by PM from me regards the rules/guidelines of the quiz ;) They are then prompted to submit a 'made up' definition.

oh right I think he gets it.

Edit: just had a light bulb moment. Was thinking how are we gonna be able to answer the correct answer if we all submit red herrings.... You are gonna post the correct answer too are n't you. All the responses will posted but not who actually posted em right.

I expect your thick mate thinks that people google just because they actually have some trivial knowledge.  Does everyone who beats 'him' at poker just get lucky and actually aren't better poker players?
:)  you and Tighty are both showing the sort of dominance in quizes that Lance Armstrong once showed in cycling.

Quizzes.

;)
fml. Any one can use spell checker :)

Anyone.
could if I wanted lol

Could if I wanted, lol

He/She who submits their selections first in the next part will be the benefactor in the event of a tie-break.

[X] know one answer for sure.
[X] thought, hmm this one sounds about right, but can't possibly be as it was my answer and you would have rejected
[X] thought as Kinboshi is Japanese, it would be easy and pick the answer relating to Japan.

Looks like as I only know 1 answer tighty starts with a 5-1 lead. Probably enough :)

Given that it gives you no competitive advantage, my answer has to be "yes".

I would however compare it to finding out the Wrestlemania results from the others at school when you've got the VHS to watch on your return home. Fantastically tempting and rather difficult to avoid, but ultimately considerably less fulfilling.

Answers in, can I Google now?

Given that it gives you no competitive advantage, my answer has to be "yes".

I would however compare it to finding out the Wrestlemania results from the others at school when you've got the VHS to watch on your return home. Fantastically tempting and rather difficult to avoid, but ultimately considerably less fulfilling.

Have to agree with this, where's the fun in knowing before the 'reveal'?

It's very interesting watching the answers coming in and seeing who's picking what.

By the early polls the reveal should be pretty fun with but a length across the principal protagonists (and a few tailed off, granted!)

Am I allowed to select my own answers?

I was pondering this as in the live balderdash game you can select your own answers to try and encourage others to pick yours too. In this version though I don't see how this would benefit you.

Ultimately, I suppose you can but surely you wont get any points for that?

Am I allowed to select my own answers?
Right then.....here they are!!

Please submit the answer which you believe to be correct (obv not your own!) to me by PM by 10pm on 28th January. You will score one point each time one of your answers is selected, and a bonus point each time you select the true answer of a question. In the event of a tiebreak, he who submits this part earliest will be deemed the winner....so crack on!!

;)

Couldn't care less about the reveal.

Might start a thread, on the diary board, called "Tal does, therefore he is..."

couldn't resist......

I thought it's a point for every time your answer is picked. So picking my own guarantees a point? Or have I completely mis-understood lol.

Not that it matters. We ain't allowed!

I've had 12/15 responses so far...no-one has got them all right, and we've only had one duck. However....the real potential for point scoring comes in having your definitions chosen!!

Once I have remaining submissions in we can go for an early reveal if people so choose? Otherwise happy to give it until next Tuesday evening...

15 - The number of players in a Rugby Union team and also the number of people who entered this quiz.

64 - The % of answers that you Blondes gave to false definitions.

1094 - The estimated number of 'Blonde-minutes' wasted on this thread.

Question Number One.....

You were asked to proffer definitions for the word..."Palooka".

I'm afraid to say.....those who wrote the below were not exactly the first selected for the lunchtime kickaround (they weren't selected at all):

TightEnd - A game of "hoopla" played by Indian Children

kinboshi - Old American slang for being inebriated.

Geo the Sarge - Palooka is a cruiser class warship within the Ugandan Navy, named after Ugandas first Admiral of the fleet Obafeme Palooka

millidonk - A palooka is a wooden utensil used to carve wood in southern Asia

Cf - A variant of padooki with only 2 betting rounds.

BobAlike - The marking on a Mexican sombrero.

Vblue - Artistic representation of a historical period, the autheticity of which has been distorted since creating an incorrect notion of the reality.

ruud - A card game which originated in Korea in the 1950's. Best described as a cross between 5 card draw and Uno

Silo Graham - A hat worn to keep the head warm in the mountains in Chile

For the following, with those who erroneously selected your answers named and shamed in bold italics:

Tal - A woodwind musical instrument, similar to an ocarina. TightEnd, Waz1892, cambridgealex

smashedagain - Term used to describe someone of Polish decent. From Polak. david3103

david3103 - A palooka, or pallouqa is the name given to russian 'matryoshka' dolls (often referred to as Baboushka dolls since they prepresent an old woman or grandmother). Palooka dolls are not made in the traditional style and represent a cat, or pallou as the Russians refer to them. Cf, Ruud

cambridgealex - Swahili for "president". Silo Graham

MintTrav - An Argentinian dance, known for it's complicated footwork and unusual in that it is one of the few dances in the world in which the woman leads. smashedagain, bobAlike

Waz1892 - A sport played mainly in asian countries, reportedly played by over 200million people every day.  A growing call for it to be part of the 2018 or 2022 Olympics games due to its popularity in the Far East. MintTrav

That's probably what it was, cos I did this as soon as I got into the hotel from the hospital, and just about 5 hours after the bang. I still think yours is the right answer though.

Question 4 asked you to come up with a plausible summary for the plot of "Jamon, Jamon", a genuinely brilliant and culturally fascinating film by Pedro Almodovar featuring his classic combo of Cruz and Bardem.

ruud   A fusion of Jamaican and Bollywood influences brings us the romantic love story of an Indian Princess and a Rasta Romeo.

Silo Graham   Cape Town is the latest city where a string of murders has taken place in one of the townships.  Normally there wouldn't be such publicity surrounding the deaths but there's a dark secret linking these bodies and of bodies discovered in Johannesburg, Durban and Bloemfontein.

Waz1892   A spanish film, despite its "meat" title follows the story of the Bull fighting in the Spanish towns and cities.  Following the story from its orgins to todays moral dilemmas Spain and its people found themselves asking

Here we go then....it's going to take a Herculean effort from smashedagain/VBlue to overhaul front-running Tal...

In Question 5 you were asked to define the word 'karoshi'.

Top marks for effort, but zero marks for being selected go to....

TightEnd   A Japanese word meaning "overworked" as compared to Japanese word Kinboshi meaning "overwrought about religion, homeopathy and speed cameras"

Tal   Final evolution of Pokèmon Lickitung, becoming a large lizard with the ability to attack by firing water from its mouth.

kinboshi   Japanese name for the 'blowfish', a poisonous fish that must be prepared by highly-skilled chefs otherwise the poison can kill diners.

Geo the Sarge   Is the name given to the art of Origami, only using aluminium to create masterful creations by folding the lightweight metal

smashedagain   Japanese indoor footwear expected to be worn by visitors and guests.

millidonk   Island off the coast of Japan which suffered a devastating earthquake in 1970s

Cf   Earlier version of the katana

BobAlike   Algerian wheat based savoury dish.

cambridgealex   The 12th and final course in the traditional Japanese menu "Sabashi"

ruud   A Chinese term for complete peace found through meditation.

Silo Graham   An ancient Japanese duel performed with swords

The sight chez Smashedagain blows up having tracked the leader throughout!

Just fml. That's all. Gonna read now, its not like I am not on here 24/7 and I just missed my 2nd reveal running.

Farce. I knew the definition of palooka and gave the definition as my answer with ref to Butch from Pulp Fiction

Ed you took my answer as wrong and can tell the difference between l and i. I sent an l as you have it set out in the op and not L

Love that David has picked my first two herrings tho. He is clearly far more intelligent than the blonde community realise.

Omg Tal you cheating bar steward. The film answer foxed me... Putting adate (1992) before you answer.... My first thought was Ed you plonka, you've copy n pasted that straight from somewhere lol.

Arrrrr. I see your problem now Ed. question 1 I wanted i and iPhone capitalised it to I and question 4 I wanted L and sent it in lower case. Its only 1 point so no harm done

Awesome quiz and just as I expected loads of people out there believe my bollocks

Wow - great fun.  Reveal was superb.  Can't believe I made 2nd as I only knew for sure one of the five answers Palooka.

It was the Jamon Jamon description - which is very close to a real-life family story that got me 4 points.  My father and his 3 brothers did grow up on a farm in Spain in the 1930s and their father was temporarily imprisoned for harbouring some people on his land, but was released when the local bishop demanded so at the police station!

Well done Tal.
