Title: What factors should affect where I play live? This weekend a prime example.
Post by: dtm75 on January 18, 2013, 02:24:28 PM
Afternoon.

I'm a moderate player, had a few MTT successes online and have been playing a fair bit live (as an effort to combat depression and staying in too much) over the last 6-9 months at Gala Leeds and played 3 (2 x incredible 100) times at DTD.  I have cashed in 2/3 at DTD in the 1 x Incredible £100 and a min cash in the 150k Deepy a few weeks back.  Have probably cashed in 20-30% of the games at Gala.

This isn't a thickly veiled brag post, honest, I appreciate that I won't cash in anything like that many tournaments over a bigger sample set, but the question is what should affect where I play?  Should I play locally, fairly small-ball poker, where I think I am in the top 25% of the field, and be content with a few minor scores and it's a good craic, or should I hop in the motor and play a lot more at DTD where I'm probably a fish, but an unknown fish with all the benefits and disadvantages that come with that and I'll probably have a chance of improving?

It currently comes down to a combination of the following:

Gala Leeds Positive
-------------------------
- I know most players and their games
- Good fun
- It's local
- A well run room
- Small-Med sized fields 50-80
- Poker league
- Well within my bankroll

Gala Leeds Negative
-------------------------
- I know most players and their games, tend to play too many marginals and try and get too clever as I (think I) can assign such an accurate range on the majority of the field
- Some of the more observant players are accustomed to my play (tells?), even when I try and mix things up
- Choice of game, Mon/Fri and Sun are worth paying in terms of guarantees and structure IMHO, other nights are not to my tastes

DTD Positive
-----------------
- Better standard of player (can hope to improve)
- Excellent club
- well run
- Big(ger) guarantees

DTD Negative
-------------------
- Better standard of player? Am unsure of this as yet, but during the New Year deep stack (appreciate this is a possible exceptional field due to monies available)
- No free coffee ;) , drink gallons of the stuff
- 90mile drive through Bradford centre, M62, M1 - too much on a school night?
- Borderline within my bankroll

This Saturday, Incredible 100, £30k guaranteed at DTD. In Leeds, £100+£50 (+2k added) with 150 expected runners [2-day].

Not sure what represents more value, based upon the above.

Would welcome any thoughts/advice.

Dan

I'd normally say DTD - of course - but whats the weather going to be like to do 90 miles tomorrow? and back?

This weekend, a home fixture makes the most sense.

It's a shame the service has dropped 1000% lately. Was playing the MPP yesterday and people BUYING drinks/food couldn't get a valet never mind people on the cash games.

Lol!

I can appologise and go back! Problem is I've no idea what I'm apologising for !

George Weinberg made a very convincing case for it whilst in st kitts and I've been considering it since.

Something to do with my nose and my face and my bank balance if I remember rightly!
