Title: Security help
Post by: paulhouk03 on February 18, 2013, 09:28:42 AM
Hello

Been robbed again

Need help to deter the chavs

We have a side window which any one could walk up to which is our weak point of the property. The side window is next to the road which leads to a dead end. But it has car parking spaces in. And no route of escape unless they wanna climb into another house. To escape then.

We are ment to be in a gated community but the gates never work.

What's the best way to deter the chavs?

CCTV ? Fence? Thorny bush? Bars on windows? I will try show some pics so the window in question

Need to phone the window boarders first

Security Camera or even dummy one where it can be clearly seen. Nice houses are always obv targets in poorer areas mate. All the no marks from Riddings target our estate but I have a system that covers the whole house so never been bothered

I lived in Manchester for a few years, never got broken into but got mugged a few times, horrible place. The place still leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

Get alarms/locks fitted on your windows, the louder the better.

If they go into other rooms whilst in the property have locks on your doors within the house, obv with the lock being on the other side to what an intruder would be on.

Leave the lights on, get a non handbag dog etc.

I'm interested in the whole mugging thing, or rather people's reaction to it.

Fortunately I've never been mugged myself, but I often wonder how difficult it is to do the sensible thing and hand your valuables over.

I'm sure I would, but I have this fear that I might just think "Ah fuck it, they can only kill me once."

It's interesting red, my views have changed over time. When we lived in York, I honestly wouldn't have known what a mugging was but literally in our first week of living in Manchester my mum and dad said to me if anyone ever approaches you asking for money or what have you just hand it over and don't put up a fight. I thought this was strange, but went along with it. I lived in Manchester from ages of like 9-13 and I didn't have to wait long before I put this advice to good use..

One time I was walking home carrying a couple of bags of shopping for my mum when a group of about 7 or so black lads circled me and told me to empty my pockets. I pulled out a receipt along with about 70p in change, they asked if that was my money, I said "no it's my mum's change", they said " oh man, we can't thief of yo mom's" and let me on my way, which was nice of them..

another time I was bunking off school, I was grabbed by a ginger guy and his mate, probably in their late 20s and they took my limited edition charlotte hornets hat that I was wearing, I did actually put up a bit of a protest but it didn't last long. #HateGingers

there were a couple of little incidents but one which has stayed with me til this day was when my mum sent me to the chemist to get some medicine as my sisters were ill. I came out of the chemist and a guy came upto me on his bmx and told me to give him all of my money. I said I don't have any money, he said "yes you do, I saw you pay with £20 in the chemist" he then lifted up his top and pulled out a knife. I was like ffs and just handed over the money feeling sorry for myself, he then told me to give him my walkman, my voice got a bit quivery at this point and I was like " I can't give you this, I just got it for a present " he replied "F***ing give it to me" then like an angel from heaven a learner driver pulled up alongside and he made his exit.

I saw some terrifying things when I lived in Manchester, saw a driveby, a man get mugged whilst he was carrying his daughter, they even took his trainers.

Once I turned about 16 I had a massive growth spurt and said I would never be a victim again, I decided I would rather go out swinging then let someone get the better of me, that was all going fine until a man holding a black plastic bag pulled a machete on me whilst I was in Jamaica.. I had some money in my sock which he didn't get, but he got the contents of my pockets. That was my own fault really, you are warned not to leave the resort especially not at like 3am, but I was hot and couldn't sleep..

One time a guy attempted to mug me in London, by this time I had been in the RAF for a couple of years, 6ft 3 and was at peak physical condition. I laughed in his face and told him in no uncertain terms that I would smash his face in if he didn't walk away from me right there and then. Unsurprisingly he took me up on my offer.

Now I have a child of my own, I don't think I would do anything which would put her having her father around into jeopardy nor would I ever let her live in a place where she felt remotely unsafe.

U lived in Headingly Leeds you must know the score, its one of the most burgled places in the world. Clueless students ahoy. If you dont want to be burgled get lights on side street and get a simple monitoring system with two cams, hook up to your lappy they only cost about a hundred quid. Make sure the cam is well above the side window but visible. If the place is rented ask the landlord to pay for a few more security measure.. Put a note on the side window saying you are being video'd

Fascinating stuff Milliy.

I've had a gun pointed at me on two occasions. (nothing to do with mugging) Both times I almost crapped myself. I once shot a bloke too, but he asked me to do it.

Funny you should say that, I also had a gun pulled on me! This was in Estonia and the gun holder was an Estonian policeman pointing it a pair of pissed up Englishmen who were refusing to leave a casino. Said policeman also told the whole taxi rank to not let us in their cabs so we had to walk back to the hotel which we had no idea where it was in approx 5ft of snow wearing T-shirts. I have also been stabbed by a friend as I asked him to do it. I also once asked the same friend to cut off my foot so I didn't have to go to work the next day, thankfully he wasn't as drunk as me that time! Luckily I drink about 1,000000th of what I used to. Will show you my scar when next in DTD. Cliffs on your gun stories?

Sorry to hear about the burglary..

Motion sensors and an alarm system won't do much in terms of prevention, the thieves will still have more then enough time to take your stuff before the law get there. You're probably better off getting a guard dog if you can, or just move to a safer less vulnerable area.

Now to Red-dogs comment about Muggings, I lived in New york for most of my life growing up (Long Island - which is pretty nice) first time someone tried to mug me was when I went to get KFC from union turnpike which was about a 20 minute walk from where I lived, 2 guys asked me to give them the bag, which I was not giving up being 13 and only being allowed fast food once every two months, so I took a beating but held onto the bag.  Went home told my uncle whom I lived with; he immediately took me out in his car, we found the guys who must have been no 16ish he made the kids tell them where they lived (it was this or he would call the law plus my uncle was 6'4 and built like a brick shit house) he told their parents and made me fight one of kids one on one.. I think this was probably a good way of dealing with the situation at the time because it taught the kids a lesson about consequences. Pretty sure they didn't try to Mug anyone after that

Second time I was finishing training in Sunnyside was catching the subway home when three guys demanded I give them my Jordans I refused and started fighting got stabbed twice and got a razor blade across my face (Scars still slightly visible) I probably should have handed over my bag which was just full of gym gear and my Jordans would have saved a lot of worrying and heartache for my family.

Third time I was coming back from a house party in West Ham and two black youths both on mountain bikes asked me for the time, then pulled out a gun and demanded my wallet, which without hesitation I quickly handed over as there was no way I was gonna be a hero.

So I think it's situational, sometimes you stand and fight other times you give them what they want.

But saying that if I was with any of my kids or my partner I would immediately hand over my wallet/cash.

That's an excellent insight Mr Bang, and I'm sure you're right about it all being situational.

I agree on the situational thing I ha a friend who was involved in an armed robbery the house had 4 girls in it and they came in with machetes one of the girls ha competed at national level karate and is pretty fucking tough she said to me he considered it maybe I tere was 2 or 3 guys she may have taken it on basically she got tied up to her friend and could have escaped the lad were like 16-18 and they left one of the younger ones with her while they raided the house but she stayed quite which I believe was the right call as later on they found out they had guns

Paul, simple piece of advice for you :)

Get an apartment 2-3 floors up, then see the bastards try and get through your window!

Apartments don't like having guard dogs in the place

Can't get my gfs dad to buy me an apartment either :(
