My stepdad has brought me up since I was 4 years old fed and clothed me took me on holidays and been there for me for the past 34 years !!

As some of you know my dad has cancer of the oesophagus

He has an operation tomorrow morning ......it's a 7 hour operation that has to move his stomach!
3 days in intensive care 2 weeks in hospital and 3-6 months to recover !!

It's why I've not posted much lately we have a lot on our plate ....

If I ever needed some run good it's now........

Thought it would be, it's got a good reputation for its stomach and oesophagus treatment (according to a doctor friend of mine anyway).  So he's in the best hands possible.

The operation was cancelled this morning due to lack of intensive care bed !!
Got to wait again now !!!

How bloody frustrating. Feel for you mate.

Dad Spent the night in hospital all ready for today family all prepared I took 2 days off to help my mum be there etc
And last minute cancelled

wouldn't mind as much ...but its a big op

They have to remove two ribs ,collapse a lung ,remove the cancer then  move his stomach up! 7 hours and long recovery! takes a load for us all to prepare mentally !
they woke him in the night to put drips in etc ....then send him home again!

re scheduled for Friday!

Jeeeezzz this is horrible just rang hospital he's still in theatre !!

Hospital just rang .......

It took 2.5 hours to collapse his lung at the beginning of the operation so it took 9.5 hours !!
However after that it went like a dream!!

Relief !!

I Went to see him last night ...they where keeping him asleep and breathing for him to give his body a rest but he looked fine apart from the obvious tubes and pipes everywhere.

 I feel it helps to talk about it and write it down here!

Had the best nights sleep last night for quite some time !!

Went to the hospital yesterday afternoon and he was awake (still in intensive care)

He is doing extremely well .....he's laughing and joking around with the nurses asking for a young nurse !
And when can he have a bed bath !

Obviously there is a long way to go and it's early days .....but everything is looking good and positive

What great news this is, thanks Lee, & fingers crossed for a continuing speedy recovery for your Dad.

Been this afternoon ....laughing my head off at him last night he had a nurse called paul !!
That's teach him !

He's doing really well

Ha ha didn't meet paul .....
They are all brilliant though 16 beds One nurse per bed plus at least 5 others milling around

Not good today!!

Still in intensive care

He's in a lot  of pain and his heartbeat is  fluctuating

Nothing that's unexpected though

That's a bugger. Hope he picks up tomorrow.

Fingers crossed it's a small hiccup and things improve quickly.

Hope it goes well.  He's in the best hands.

Bad day!
My dad was in loads of pain yesterday ....caused by what we now know to be a drain tube that came out which caused his lung to collapse
He is stable again now but very confused and tired with the morphine pain relief ):

At least another 2 days in intensive care.

Bad day yesterday loads of pain, irregular and fast heart rate and infection  :(

Today he is loads and loads better things are  looking up....still in intensive care but hopefully not for much longer. :)

Been following religiously mate. Tough times but times like this really do make you realise how much more important family is to almost everything else in life.

He had a blood transfusion yesterday as some count was low ...but doing really well
Wednesday he is having a drink for the first time since the operation ....which he is looking forward to!

He had a drink today for a scan !

The stent has moved slightly ....not sure until tomorrow what they are going to do but we assume fit another one.

Another setback

Generally he is doing really well walking about etc
Going to be fed through the tube for some time I think !

The stent they put in has not gone to plan it's got to be moved next Thursday .......however shock to us all they have sent him home until then!!

He still got to be fed and watered via the tube but he's home !
Mums gotta change it etc

No doubt good to have him home, hope things run smoothly until then and when they move it next week m8.

Dad had the stent moved back up and it all went well,He also had his first drink on Friday

He is doing really well

Just saw this thread.  So glad to hear all is going well now.  :)

My dad has been drinking for about a week now ...with no issues !
He is also now eating very small amounts of soft foods with the food drip still connected at night

It's good that he is home things are progressing slowly but surely

Update

My dad is being fed by tube for ten hours a day now (was 18)

He is a driving instructor .... He done 2 lessons during last week and 3 on Saturday ....the 3 was too much he was exhausted
But it's really helped him mentally !

Really pleased everything is going ok.
Spent a day yesterday, playing for stacks and sharing stories. You played very well. But to be honest, always gives you a boast taking 20k from someone first hand! Haha.
Like a mentioned, I have never read much of The Lounge section, but after your story had to get involved.

Was a pleasure meeting you properly Lee, other than just a hello here and there.
Such a nice guy. I glad everything is on the mend now mate, time for you yourself to chill.

My Dad wanted me to thank you all for your concerns and best wishes ...he was quite touched by the thread and was quite thrilled to realise he's on that tinternet thingy !!

He get tired easier than he did  and when he eats he doesn't know when he's full ...but apart from that he's back to normal !

Happy days, to be fair I don't think many of us know when we're full :D

One year ago tomorrow my dad went into theatre we had a rough time of it but all is well 😃

A text conversation a min ago and I asked if he thought he would still be here .... His reply !

Yep never give up if ur given a chance no matter how small  grab it with both hands and don't let it go 😇
