Title: Ooooo Tricky
Post by: ACE2M on February 27, 2013, 10:05:13 PM
Tricky ponderers

Would you rather a £15 million government bomb diffusing robot cut the wire on a bomb that might not be the right wire or would you prefer a convicted murderer who has been given a whole life term do it?

Who's paying for the robot?

Where is the bomb?

Who did the murderer kill?

Come on, man: details matter.

So our government?

The bomb is where? What sort of devastation would it cause?

Are we really keen for the bomb not to go off? School? School for bunnies? School for duck-sized horses?

our government

the wire has to be cut whatever the location makes no difference, one is not more likely than the other to succeed

If the bomb is at the bottom of the sea, I don't care whether it goes off or not. If it's in a public area and there's a higher risk of damage to life and property, different story.

My basic position is to value human life, tho.

Does the murderer have any bomb defusing experience or was he just passing between jobs and said 'Don't worry pal, I saw how to do this on Leathal Weapon?'

Save the money, let the murderer rot away, pass me the scissors.

I've always wanted to make a hero call

I don't believe the robot costs £15 million. The only way you can get to a figure like this is to include all the development costs of the years that people spent getting to this point. A lot of the cost apportionments will be pretty arbitrary but, even if we accept your figure, they are sunk costs. The relevant cost now is the replacement cost which, at this stage, amounts to little more than the cost of the bits that it is made from.
