Title: Grinding music
Post by: rbc_mike on March 27, 2013, 01:44:00 AM
If you listen to music when grinding, what helps you focus/gets your in the zone?  Different for live/online?

No online session is complete for me without a listen to Jurrasic 5's "Quality Control" album (fwiw I rarely listen to hiphop).

Let's get a blonde playlist going :D

I heartedly recommend listening to classic video game soundtracks while grinding, I do it all the time, kind of chills me.  Things like Tekken 2, Final Fantasy soundtracks and such, plenty of playlists from them on the You Tube.  Just be careful when you search for them, you can end up wasting hours watching someone else play crap like Night Trap.

Barry White is the old favourite as music to grind to, surely?

In those other sessions I'm not the one who is crying.

This is not poker playing related, but the second I stopped listening to music in the background while I was working, my focus and productivity skyrocketed. I personally listen to music while I play because I only play for fun, but if I ever took it seriously again, especially if I was playing lots of tables, I'd advocate not listening to music.

Interesting, as I am probably the opposite.  Probably depends on the nature of the work involved, and also the music being played as well.

Yeah, I think if I could hack classical music that would be ok in the background, but generally I like my music either fast, loud, edgy or all three so probably terrible for working to.

has to all be music that doesn't have many vocals, must mostly be upbeat too.

no idea how people could sit for 10-15 hours playing multiple tables and not have music on, I would go mental.

This is really sick too, Dan Morgan linked me to it a few weeks back it's been constantly on during my grinds.

I have Spotify and a few playlists about as well as chunks of starred music. My main grind pieces atm are Metronomy/Jack Penate as well as the classic House of Pain- Jump Around and Skee-Lo - Jump Around.

YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKRchFtlkEI

Can't really feel like you'll lose an all in listening to this. I pretty much always have music when solo grinding and normally do when grinding with friends unless we have a movie on. My best grinds are normally where we put on LOTR or something and I realise in the credits I barely saw a second.

Interesting reading players choices :) lol
Had a player next to me last week and the whole table could hear his happy hardcore blurring out his beats, how on earth he was able to focus and watch play is beyond me lol

If I'm losing I like quite peaceful music, if I'm winning I like really fast tempo music with a bit of a beat. When I start shaking my shoulders and nodding my head and clicking my mouse in time to the music I am ALWAYS 100% crushing :) I picture a montage of myself powering through the jungle with a slashing vines out of my and fending lions off the beautiful scantily clad amazonian girl im carrying.

I just cant wait to bbe kind (disney), I'm so excited, I would walk 500 miles and Livin La Vida Loca are all great songs to have this montage to, I ultimately end up getting far to giddy and going all in too much and having to turn them off though.

R Kelly and Britney songs used to be popular but they got perma gg'd after some heavy losses which were ofc entirely their faults, wankers.

I'd hate to derail this thread so keep the music coming, but there is loads of research that backs up no music >> any music in terms of focus/learning.

Loads of research that shows the reverse as well:  http://www.irishexaminer.com/world/uplifting-music-can-aid-concentration-and-alertness-study-finds-225882.html for example.

I think it's too simplistic to state that music is good or bad for focus.  It depends on the individual, the music, the task in hand, etc.

hah! A WHITE van man "high on drum and bass" was driving so erratically that police pulled him over thinking he must be under the influence.

I like mixcloud.com for my grind. this podcast is on repeat at the moment. i just like how sets flow and how there's no need to change song every few minutes..

this one from one of my favourite labels. http://www.mixcloud.com/lovesickrecordings/love-sick-podcast-april-2013

genre - up beat chilled bass/dub music.??

Yeah surely it's depending on the task in hand? Does anyone here listen to the same style of music regardless of there position in a tourney?
I ended up listening to classical music when last grinding and being card dead it chilled me out abit, before I was listening to upbeat tempo and I didn't feel rushed.
Last playlist
Smiths
Kasabian
Celo green
Sam Cooke
And knocked out to mr bob Marley :)

Does anyone find a artist or song that just don't seem to bring any luck or jinx u?

The album of car advert songs. Play is up there for me too.

Discovery by Daft Punk I think is my favourite, closely followed by Late Registration by Kanye West, then you can't look much further than 'Are You Experienced' album by Jimi Hendrix for a weird mix of a top 3.

TBH though, I rarely expand my horizons with music and know I am missing out on so much, but what can you do.

I don't grind often, but I generally just have some iTunes playlists that I use for driving and fire one of those up.

Again, the dangers of driving to rap became apparent in 2006 when I accumulated 12pts in about 6 months  ;djinn;
