Title: Laying Your Own Team and Buying Your Happiness
Post by: Matt.NFFC. on April 13, 2013, 09:25:52 AM
As the thread title says, do many of you guys lay your favourite football team to effectively "buy" some kind of satisfaction if your team fails to get the result you want?

I have been thinking about this recently, as I would be gutted if my team didn't get promotion this year, so how much would I be prepared to fork out for some kind of secondary satisfaction/compensation.

My team are currently 4.7 to Lay for promotion, and if this was your team, would you risk £1000 to win £270 if your team failed to go all the way?

You lose a grand but you get the joy of promotion to the "big" league, and your compensation for the pain of failing is £270 in your back pocket.

Have you effectively bought satisfaction? (in a betting sense only guys please!)

I do lay my own team (just as well) on a case by case basis if i think its correct at  the prices

nothing to do with my emotional state at all, merely a betting view.

So no I am not trying to "buy happiness"

It gives me no pleasure to see my team lose even if I have bet on the other outcome, because I am not betting amounts that hurt, as £1000 for example would

I quite often back sp*rs for similar reasons.

But what if it was for the big prize though?

Game by game can be swallowed.......but what about the heartache on missing out on the prize that you so want for your team, and the huge disappointment that goes with it?

That hefty Lay bet may just alter the mindset, to be able to "cope" with the failure of your team.

Basically what Tighty said, but I did have one exception: in the Champions League final, I backed Chelsea to win on pens.

As a spurs fan, this was a consolation for not getting into the CL for the following year.

Still would rather have lost!

Don't really believe in that tbh, it wouldn't alter my disappointment at all. Best to be in a state of perennial disappointment as a football fan of anyone except Man U!

Live by the sword, die by the sword. Financial transactions/betting completely separate to happiness I hope, in the long term anyway.

You need to be ruthless to win money and treat it as a business so distance yourself  between the two

Supporting your team is one thing but this should never cloud your judgement when making "investments" through betting

Not even as a one-off?

I regularly Lay my own team over the season as we bet to win money obv, but for that big prize?

I think I'd buy that satisfaction for that big prize, and take the hit financially.......it'd be worth loads next season in enjoyment!

You do realise that that the bet doesn't actually have an impact on whether or not they stay up?  Why do it for a grand?  Seems like a lot of money to lose, why not say I'll watch every game in a silly hat or something. Seems strange to lose a lot of money trying to buy something that's not for sale.

Then I think your question is rhetorical   :)

The £1000 figure was just a figure I plucked out.......no way could I afford to lose that amount.

I guess you guys are ruthless bettors, which is what it's all about.

I would have thought there would be a bit of mileage for passionate football fans to have a few quid in their back pocket to help them deal with the emotional heartache of their team not making it and winning that final for example.

I'd be like "aaarrrggghhh we're fecking useless, but at least I can treat myself to a new.....(insert luxury item here) now"

When we play palarse or west ham or teams all my mates support I lump on the opposing team every single time.

I used to bet against Wimbledon and made a bit out of it but it just felt too 'wrong' and I had to stop. Rationally I know that betting either for or against my team makes no difference but the football supporter part of my brain overrides the betting part and I can't do it any more.

Tottenham supporting friend of mine regularly bets against Spurs as a financial hedge if they lose.

Was costing him chunks until recently.
