Title: Long shot !! London marathon 2014 Post by: $muszlesz$ on April 25, 2013, 11:58:25 PM I know this might be a long shot but I want to do the London marathon next year for a charity but looking into it and its hard to get a place in the event. Don't suppose anybody here is involved in any charities and could get me a place through there charity to raise money for them ?? Thanks

Post by: craigbetts on April 26, 2013, 12:11:54 AM Not quite a long shot, most charities are allocated guarenteed places, in return you have to pledge to raise a minimum amount. The more you raise, the better the package they offer you. Something like 300 - 500 raised would get you a place easy.
My advice, pick a charity that has sentiment and see what they are offering. Search engine, easy. Title: Re: Long shot !! Post by: $muszlesz$ on April 26, 2013, 12:13:46 AM Most I've found want 1-2k befôre u get the place which would be very hard to get tbh

Title: Re: Long shot !! London marathon 2014 Post by: kinboshi on April 27, 2013, 05:53:04 AM Opens for entries on Monday, so best to try then. You've got a 1/4 chance of getting a place directly, and if not you can then approach charities and ask for a Golden Bond place where you'll have to raise a grand or more.
The places cost the charities a few hundred quid, which is why they ask you to raise so much. But it's not that hard to raise a grand or so through friends, family and work. Your company might also match the amount you raise if they're a big company. Otherwise, there are lots of other big marathons around. Nottingham, Edinburgh, Liverpool, etc., all have well supported marathons that are easier to get in to. I'm thinking about the Loch Ness marathon this autumn, but not sure about that yet. It's the UK's number 1 charity working to end domestic violence.
Want me to speak to him and see if I can get you one of their places? Title: Re: Long shot !! London marathon 2014 Post by: Delboy on April 27, 2013, 12:08:23 PM Have you tried choosing a charity that appeals to you and trying to raise the required money. list here:

By too hard to raise the money I basically mean I don't know enough people that would donate money to get to 2k.....already looked at the link the other night and most I found were in the regions of 2k. But hopefully ill be able to try the way bosh I said... Thanks guys Title: Re: Long shot !! London marathon 2014 Post by: $muszlesz$ on May 02, 2013, 01:21:17 AM Spoke to somebody who is going to have a word at my local charity....willen hospice.....hopefully they can get me a place pretty happy about this as its local charity aswell.
Title: Re: Long shot !! London marathon 2014 Post by: kinboshi on May 02, 2013, 05:48:36 AM The charity has to pay a few hundred quid for a place, so I'm sure they'll still want you to raise a minimum amount, otherwise you're actually taking money away from the charity that could have been spent on good causes.
You might also get a place through the ballot, then you won't have to get a charity place and 100% of any money raised will go to the charity. Title: Re: Long shot !! London marathon 2014 Post by: $muszlesz$ on May 02, 2013, 03:01:41 PM Tried the ballot the other night....I'm sure this charity will be minimum of 1k which I believe is more reasonable for me to be able to raise than 2k which the others were asking for

It's not particularly difficult to raise money, you just have to pester the hell out of people. It's sales, but it's far removed from selling actual products to friends or asking them to invest in something, because it's for a good cause (in theory).
If you're still planning on running, there will likely be a spot for you with Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, but you will have to raise I think a minimum of £1.5k. Title: Re: Long shot !!
