Title: Do you call here?
Post by: WellChief on January 21, 2006, 03:27:20 AM
This is in the last 4 of the 12K gtd on Tribeca.  My toughest decision of the whole tournament, because of the aggressiveness of my opponent.   I thought he was a good player although he got a lot of abuse from some people for being overly aggressive and lucky.  He had been known to limp with monsters like KK, AA, AK, so my hand range for him was massive.  I had him on KK-AA, or even AQ, to a missed flush draw, or a set.  I got myself into this mess by betting weak to disguise my hand.

So.. would you call or fold?

I would probaly have called, if he hit a set on the river then fair enough.

call, he thinks you are weak

I think you are way ahead, he could have a missed draw, an overpair, one pair maybe top pair

If he has a set, you have to pay him

I'll post whether I called or folded tomorrow morning once I get a few more replies.  Cards will be revealed.

His range is pretty small if u ask me.

He either has a monster or nothing imo.

presumably the re-raise is a lot smaller if he has a monster?

or does knowledge of the player suggest otherwise Mr Chief?

Surely the re-raise is less if he has a made hand other than a monster?

No way he pushes here with Top pair.

With a monster he may overbet to hope for call. But cant see him doing this with 1 pair, even if it was AA or KK.

He was very aggressive but had avoided playing pots against me up until this point.  Here's the rest of the hand:

[Jan 21 03:08:03] : Domitian called 297,600
[Jan 21 03:08:03] : Showdown!
[Jan 21 03:08:03] : Seat 1 : Domitian has 5d 7h
[Jan 21 03:08:05] : Seat 3 : the smiler has 5s 5h
[Jan 21 03:08:05] : the smiler has 3 of a Kind: 5s
[Jan 21 03:08:05] : the smiler wins 685,200 with 3 of a Kind: 5s

I'd have liked a bit longer to make the decision to be honest.  I didn't mention that two hands before I had doubled through against him with KK when he reraised me all in preflop with an underpair.  Afterwards I was kicking myself at the call but the more I look at it I'm happy with it.  He made a great bet at the end and it paid off for him.

And... I went out 4th three hands later when I got KK all in preflop against AQ and K10.  A pitiful performance considering the chip position I was in before the above hand :D
