I've just bent the ear of Thomas Kremser and told him that this late start was simply not acceptable.

It seems that he's taken my words on board as Day 2 has now commenced.

Yeehaaa - shuffle up and deal - keep it coming - hope you've eaten - was considering sending a food parcel as it would be cheaper than eating the food there!

I just overheard parts of an interview with Joe Hachem who was eliminated late last night.

There were no piercing questions.

Joe pretty much said that everytime he climbed uip to a playable stack, he took a knock. He just couldn't get going.

He also mentioned that he was he was very tired last night. To be honest, he did look a bit weary, but I suppose that's the price you pay when you win the World Series. The Aussie has done interview after interview after interview and must be bloomin' shattered.

Yeehaaa - shuffle up and deal - keep it coming - hope you've eaten - was considering sending a food parcel as it would be cheaper than eating the food there!

Unfotunately, Jen and I are working on empty stomachs.

It was all very rush rush this morning. Jen's clock batteries went kaput sometime during the night, so her alarm failed to show its face.

I suggested that Jen plunges in for a chappy chippy count, but I'm afraid it'll take her a lot longer than my totty chippy count.

ps. If the last remaining female in today's field makes it to the end of the day, I'll eat my hat.

Anina Gundesen -- 28,650

Did the hat taste good ?

Ram and Chessa are both going strong on the same table.

Anina Gundesen, the young lady who qualified from a $13 rebuy, is still going steady with 25k.

I just saw her take down a pot when she bet 3k on a flop of  Aspades  Th  9c

Christain Grundtvig has just trebled through with Jh Jc v Qd Qs and  Aspades Ad

His opponents were Haugerud Endsso Stian and Olavsrud Thomas respectively with the latter being all-in with his bullets.

All the chips were shoved into the middle preflop, but the flop was a rather cringe-worthy 9h Js 4d

Turn = 9d

River = Kd

Grundtvig is now a big stack. I'll try to get a chip count.

Isaksen Rainer has doubled up to over 40k.

This Scandinavian fellow has only been playing poker for 3 months and qualified from a PokerStars freeroll.

At one point, he raise folded when he moved his chips AND his cards into the middle.

According to one source he has been a bag of nerves all week and, calming himself down with the wonderful remedy of alcohol.

He's also been getting titbits of information from some of the Scandinavian press who are desperately trying to offer the newbie some advice.

From what I understand, they're trying to help him avoid situations where he'll be outplayed. Therefore, the all-in push is being widely promoted.

One journalist informed me that he told the newbie to limp in with big hands and then just reraise all-in if an opponent stuck some chips in. Probably sound advice.

I shall keep an eye on his progress.

Julian Thew News Now -

He's increased his stack by at least a big pile of purple chips (500s) in the first half hour - so it looks like he's sat behind a Marcel Luske type tower of the things.  I put him on around 36,000 which is more comfortable than his starting 24k.

There is a kind of calm destructive frenzy taking place as the little stacks make a bid to double through.  The blinds are 800 - 1,600 with a 150 ante, so those 20kish guys are feeling the pressure.

Chessa just took a knock.

With 17k already in the pot, Janos Spada moved all-in on a board of 4h 3h Qc Ks 5s.

Chessa dwell for a quite a while. He even tried asking the Scandinavian a few questions in order to extract some information, but Spada wisely remained silent.

Chessa growled with frustration before folding.

There are 65 players remaining.

Blinds are 800 and 1600 with a 150 ante.

The average stack is 44k.

The best news of the day is that they will soon be desposing of the 25 chips, which should make chip-counts easier.

Apart from the chip leader, the happiest face in the room is probably that of rookie Isaksen Rainer who just can't stop grinning.

The Scandinavian youngster is only about 20 years old and has been playing for just 3 months.

One hand saw him limp and then call a prelfop raise.

The flop came queen high.

Rainer checked, his opponent bet 15k.

Rainer quickly moved all-in.

His frustrated opponent mucked and politely requested to see one card.

Rainer turned to a journalist who has been giving him advice and asked if he should show one or not.

The journalist said, 'Just show your weakest card'.

Rainer replied, 'I don't have a weak card'.

Hmm. Smells like aces to me.

***********************Chip Race**********************************

We're finally shedding those pesky 25s.  15 minutes for the remaining players to settle down, grab a coffee etc. etc.  It's so easy to forget to eat properly (pot calling kettle black) when the time is flying by as your players concentrate for hours at a time.

Here are some counts:

Don Protz    20k
Dario Alioto  42k
Mads Andersen  30,500
Luca Pagano  45k
Julian Thew   40k
Noah Boeken  53k
Simon Young  42k
Bad Girl           either 65k or 85k - the angle from the TV table makes it unclear (anyway she's doing fine and looks pretty happy)

After a couple of raise-fold chip losses, Julian made it all back (and a tad more) with pocket nines on the small blind.  There had been an under-the-gun limper, and a button call, so he just flat called and saw a  7c 8d Ts flop.  He thought that might be a good time to check-raise, did just that when the button bet, and picked up an extra 10k without having to show his hand...

Here's a pic of Mads Andersen.  You can't quite see it but he's wearing a very odd jumper with a kind of Mickey Mouse with a huge head.  We may be a bit thin on photos for a little while until we can sort out the camera or borrow someone else's but this will be done if at all possible.

Yep, that's Ram, sitting on a healthy stack.

Simon Young (Blondeite Suffolkpunch) is OUT.

Eliminated on the feature table by Noah Boeken.

Unforuntatley, I was unable to see the hole cards, but the board was 5d Th 5h 6c.

Boeken moved in for 22k and was called by Young.

The 7s river was no help.

Just spoke to Simon, he's absolutely gutted. He enjoyed being on the final table, but is feeling quite low after his sudden exit.

He elaborated on the hand for me.

There was a preflop raise from mateyboy which Simon flat called with A-T suited. Noah Boeken also called from the small blind.

The flop came 5d Th 5h.

Noah bet 7k. The original raiser folded and Simon called.

The turn was the 6c.

Noah moved all-in for 22k. After a biref dwell, Simon called for all his chips.

Noah turned over 5c 2c for trips. No ten came and Simon was a gonna.

When I spoke to him, he mentioned that he was convinced that Noah wouldn't call preflop with a 5, and expected a preflop reraise with AA, KK, QQ, or JJ. The most logical hand was something like pocket nines or eights.

Anyhow, it wasn't meant to be and Simon is left to make the long walk off the stage and out of the cardroom.

In a bizarre moment that makes me feel like I'm dreaming, a brass band has marched into the hotel and are now standing on the stairs along the bannister.

The good news? They're all young Danish stunners in short white skirts.

The bad news? The batteries in the camera have run out.

I can see it all though. It's a visual treat!

This is quite the most surreal thing that has ever happened on an update.  The band is spread all down the stairs, cymbals are crashing, young ladies in little skirts looking very serious are playing trumpets and things and a succession of ladies and gents in evening dress is walking up the stairs between the rows of bandmembers.  I will get a picture from somewhere...

Rainer had AJ, and Scanieboy held AQ on a board of A77Q2

Julian tells me that this Marc fellow just can't miss today - here's a hand in which he knocked out a little stack which is a tad unusual:

Marc raises,  and the short stack decides (a bit strangely) to just call for about half his stack.  But he pushed the rest in on the  2s 6s Jh flop.  It turned out he had  Kh Qc.  Marc called him with  4s 5s...
Turn:   7h
River:   8c

And he knocked out yet another player with the straight.

Other non-band related news - Anthony Chessa OUT

Feature Table News Now -

Got there at the end of a hand as Bad Girl Xuyen was stacking some chips.  Thought, "there won't be anything exciting here now I bet," then saw her raise the very next hand to 7,000.  Daniel on her immediate left moved all-in for about 20,000 which she eventually called with  Qh Qs.  He had the  Ac Ahrt though!  So that was a 30k hit to her stack, leaving her with about 70,000.

Team Norsemen Update:

Woody is sadly out, but enthusiastically wandering the tables like us press types now.  He told me that Anders Berg had had a bit of luck, moving all-in as a desperately short stack on the small blind against the big blind who had Aces... with 94off!  But the board tripped up the four (can you say that? Sounds weird) and he's still in.  Team mate Edgar Skjervold is doing much better, though, and Julian has just been moved to his table.  Between Edgar and Mads Andersen it's not a terribly easy spot though.

I'll add some local inside info.

I'm not sure how it works in other countries, but in Denmark, a child is baptised 2-4 months after it's born. Most parents decide on the name of the child after it's born, but obviously before it's baptised.

This morning the newest member of the royal Danish family was baptised. In this country, any royal event is a big event, and it's been on the national TV channels all day. The name of the prince, who will one day become king (unless we come to our senses and gets rid of the monarchy), has been the source of much speculation, and all major bookies have been taking bets on it.

I have no idea what the party at the hotel is about though.

Anyway, keep the updates coming. And get something to eat!

They're braced to break down to 3 tables.

It's very hard to see the action at the moment because they're trying t ominimise the amount of press standing around the tables. They claim it's too crowded, but I just think they don't want anyone getting in their camera shots.

Mads Andersen has to be one of today's big success stories - looking perilous upon returning with under 20k this afternoon, he hit a peak of 266,000 about half an hour ago and is unrelenting in his pursuit of more.

Mads just clashed with Julian, who'd raised to 11,000.  Mads called on the big blind and they both checked the  Ac 4s 7c flop.  The  Aspades came on the turn, and when it was checked again, he bet 14,000 - Mads called.  The  2h looked unimportant, but they both checked the river and Julian ended up winning with his  Ad 3d.

Karin Lundgren had a bit of a lucky double through, moving all-in with  Ahrt Js.  She found a caller with  Ks Kd (as you may well expect) but spiked that Ace to put her right back in the running with 60k or so.

Title: GUTTED? YOU BET!!
Post by: SuffolkPunch on January 21, 2006, 07:04:04 PM
Hello fellow mad people.

Reading earlier you will have seen I was slightly miffed to go out in 48th place today. When I joined this superb forum in September I was ridiculed (by one particular individual) for being a newbie to poker (I started playing last April) who had got lucky by getting sponsorship to join the EPT tour. Yes I am lucky to work for The Sun and have the opportunity, but i felt I was playing well enough to give it a go. Well, I lasted 10 hours in London, 11 in Austria, and ten in Dublin (went out on massive bad beat) and approached Copenhagen feeling genuinely confident that I could make the money (Austria was 53rd place - money paid at 27th).

Day 1A here I finished on 30,750 chips, slightly above average, and after the rest played their Day 1B I found myself in 40 out of 97 going into day 2.
Could this be the pay day? Well after 20 mins I thought "no" when a slightly dodgy bluff on my part backfired and I reversed to 16,000 ( ace, two, bugger all on flop and a limp caller etc - and he had second pair).

But things improved. I moved to the feature TV table and within an hour had jumped from 16,000 to 42,000. The cards were with me.  Then disaster - I called a raise with Ace ten suited, Noah Boecken (srry about spelling) in small blind calls too. The flop 5, 10 5, suited me, but Noah raises I call and he moved all in on the blank turn. He can't have a five - what on earth did he call the pre-flop raise with? If he had jacks, queens kings or aces surely he would have re-raised? Sure enough, despite my top pair/ace kicker, he shows the five, with a TWO!!!

Oh well, that's why he's a top pro and I'm a Sun hack!

To say I'm gutted is an understatement - i went out in 48th, 21 short of the money, to a Noah special.

As Snoopy - who is doing an absolutely fabulous job here with Jen - said, i went off to board the Booze Bus.

Well, I've past stop 6 and intend to complete my journey all the way to the terminus.

Up the Blondes.

And see you all (or some of you) in Deauville.

Simon "Suffolk Punch in the Glue factory" Young.

Due to a lack of access and very bright lights, this is the best shot I can get of the feature table.

Notice Christer Johanssen in the foreground.

And, bad news, in 25th place - Julian is OUT

He'll probably have more detail than I could see (well, definitely actually) but he ended up all in with 89 vs 10 5 on a Q 10 6 board.  He was covered; the hand was announced in all its tension by Thomas Kremser, there was no 7 or J  and at that second the DINNER BREAK gong noise sounded.  Hard luck Julian, and well played.

Well they feasted and returned, and now there's a reasonable space between the two regular tables out on the floor, and the Special Table on its little stage thing (as snapped by Snoops).  Despite the room, they're not too keen on the updaters hovering round the players, but it looks like Thomas Kremser might be on permanent-announce mode and will tell us some detail about the crucial pots.

They're just about to kick off again.

There was a bit of a kafuffle whilst we waited for them to move tables. There has been a redraw for seats, so all the players have had to shift their stacks elsewhere.

There are currently 24 players remaining.

Ram Vaswani has been rotated back on to the TV table, sunglasses and all.  I am going to try to get some chip counts but it's a little tricky with a bunch of spectators now crowding the rail, and no bypassing to be done.  I can see that Bad Girl has one of those World-Series-style large stacks, but it appears to be mainly made up of black chips (100s).  Looks good though, and takes up an impressive amount of space on the table...

I don't know if Snoopy's mentioned this, but seeing as he's been a bit, er, preoccupied with the lady players I should mention that two of them are on the same table now - Karin Lundgren and Anina Gundesen.  Both have around average chips.  Pictures will follow shortly...

Pictures of the players or Snippy eating the hat?

I can't any pictures of me eating my hat because I've already eaten it.

However, I shall certainly eat my shirt if either of these totties make it into the final day. I know that's a safe bet.  ;hide;

Karin Lundgren OUT in 20th -

On the TV table, this TV-worthy hand came up:

Karin min raised to 12,000, called by Philip Hilm and Ram.  Flop:   5h Js Ks.  They both checked to Karin who bet 40k - Philip moved all-in, and Ram passed, but she called.  They got Thomas Kremser over.
Karin showed:  Ac Ad
Philip showed:   8s 4s

Turn:   Aspades - guaranteed to get the maximum gasp from the audience
River:   2h - and with that ultimate blank, Karin went out.  She didn't look best pleased.

bobby - it may as well be... but Julian just bought us drinks so we're OK for now...

Mads Andersen is on the absolute rampage now - just took out two players in three hands (we're down to 14).  He has a mountain of chips, I reckon around 500,000.  The last victim was Per Anderson (that's what I heard from the announcer - it's too crowded to see what's going on) who was all-in with  Kh 9h against Mads'  Jd Jh.
The board came  5c 7d Qc 8h 7c and they're having to move another poor player onto the table of doom.

Quote from Julian about helping to chip up Mads:  "What have I done?"

Mads Andersen is a former backgammon world Champion - won the title in 2002. A lot of the stong danish poker players originally started in backgammon - most notably Gustav Hansen (who was known as Gustav Jacobsen back then), Lars Bønding and Mads Andersen.

I can't tell you how difficult it is to report on this event. The rail is jam packed and there is literally no room being offered to the press.

Chip stacks are ridiculously large so chip counts are complete guesswork.

The following names are still in:

Xuyen Pham
Anina Gundesen (shirt on stand by)
Mads Andersen
Marc Naalden
Shek Chi Hung
Christer Johanssen

Hi ponsoy and jen. Gatso here with a message from Luton

hope your boiled sweets are going down well. It's now 28 minutes and 33 seconds to buffet time and these little free food tickets are burning holes in our pockets

Hello Luton!  You feel so far away... but the buffet transcends borders.

Adam Nilsson here was just eliminated, moving in with  Jc Jd but finding himself up against  Qs Qh.

Here in the red is Mads, the back of Xuyen's head and I think the gentleman drinking coke is the one responsible for Adam's elimination

I think you might get a feel from the background of this photo what a wall of spectators is around the final two tables.  I climbed a rope.  Bad me.

10 players remaining

Level 17

Blinds 5000-1000 (1000)

I believe Jen has information on how the 11th man fell.

Christer Johanssen OUT in 11th place -

One of the favourites in the later stages of this comp has just been eliminated by Anina Gundesen.  His  Ad Js was up against her  Aspades Qh.
The flop:  9 8 7 (a couple of extra winning cards for Christer)
Turn:  6
River:  another 9 and Christer left to a pretty decent round of applause

When Number 10 falls, they are going to a single nine-handed table, which will eliminate one further player before they break for the final tomorrow (5pm - 4pm UK time)

Xuyen 'Bad Girl' Pham is our 9th place finisher!

Mads Andersen raised on the very first hand, and she moved her 67k all-in with  Th Jh.  Mads was holding   Aspades Ks, however, and the flop was no help:  Ad 9d 3d, followed by  Qh Ac.  So she misses the final by a hair's breadth... Well played these last few days though!

groan,
ul bad girl

a great trip, nearly went to plan,
but i think i boo'boo'd

raise UTG to 12k with 8-9s,
aggressive mads RR to 32k from BB
should have seen that coming and be prepared to push...
decided to call, hoping to frighten him...
flop a double bellt buster, prey he checks to me, but he moves in on 6,10,Q flop.
too quickly, think f@ck it, u got nothing & call all-in,
his 10-5 is good

next!

We've grabbed a few free drinks from the bar before the card room shuts and the chips are bagged and carted away to wherever they live at night.  We updaters might end up doing what we did last night which was a $5 sit'n'go online 4-way heads-up shootout to get it all out of our systems... I would have to defend my title, of course ;)
