I kind of agree with her. Parents who give there kids made up names are not generally the type of people I'd want my kids to grow up with or indeed the kind of parents I'd want to mix with.

I would have no problems with my lad seeing a girl called Chardonnay. Her knickers would be off a darn site quicker than Henriettas imo.

I judge people by what they look like and she is a horse twat... At least the woman isn't so deluded that she actually thinks she is good looking. (fwiw I try not to judge on superficial characteristic irl )


All names were made up at some point.. A kid is a kid, they didn't choose their name, any sort of thinking along these lines is just backwards. I would love to see your face if your daughter brought home a nice Osama Tyler Hilton to meet you. :)

someone i know just adopted two little ones with rather 'interesting' names...they are abs loaded and middle class, wonder if people will judge their kids by name.

I wouldn't hold it against the kids mate, the parents are to blame. Do you want the best for your daughter? Would you be happy if she brought home a lazy druggie?

That's just unfortunate. Although I do agree with some of what she's saying, unfortunately there will be some kids/families who are the exception to the rule.

She's a bit of a buffoon, but in someways does have a point.  If my daughter said she was dating someone called Blade or Ferrari Testarossa not sure that I'd be happy.  But saying that I think the name would be more of a reflection of the parents as opposed to child. 

I know their parents are to blame, but not letting your daughter play with a child because their parent gave them a terrible name is holding in fact it against them (the child that is). Obv I want the best for my daughter, if she made a friend called DeShaun at 8yrs old I would say that's fine you two go and play, he hasn't even tried drugs yet let alone started selling..(only an idiot would think they are going to corrupt their child because of their name) if she brought home a waster druggie I would question what she was doing with a guy like that as I thought I had raised her better. I would say he was banned from the house and suggest she doesn't see him anymore.

I knew I shouldn't have named my daughter Crystal then I could just sit on the fence in this argument. At least in a few years I will probs get free entry into the strip club.

At least you know she is safe from vamps if she is dating blade.

When I here the name Crystal I think of Dynasty and Dallas.

If a kids parents are lazy, benefit grabbing junkies what chance have there kids got? Not fair to judge I understand that and I understand some kids will do better than their parents but I'm happy to believe that the majority of the kids won't.

Been thinking....i guess its playing and over-streching (in her case) on the huge stereotypes we all have in our heads and tend to form views based on them very quickly....first impressions and all that...

Example - put a line-up of say Equestrian riders...then have a set of names in front of you, only one name doesn't ride but is a Speedway rider

Pretty sure most if not all would "assume" its the 4th name, simply because we associate equestrian as a "rich/posh sport" and line up the names that seems to fit that genre.

Jason, doesn't seem a "posh, well-to-do name" so we dis-associate that name with "poshness"

Names also seem to go with the popularity of famous people at the time...kylie's..Tyson etc.. I always thought they were a bit naff then realised my mum named me after Dean Martin who she madly fancied at the time of my arrival on this earth... i can only thank God she didn't fancy Engelbert Humperdinck !

At work I always said never trust a person who's got a first name for a surname such as Dean Martin. They were always the sly ones. Obv just a coincidence but it's the first thing I think about now when I meet someone who meets the criteria.

There is no doubt that some people give their children fairly ridiculous names and I would never have dreamt of calling my daughter Chardonnay or whatever but the whole debate does smack somewhat of elitism and a kind of snobbery that is peculiarly British.  Surely nobody in real life is so lazy that they decide to dismiss anyone simply upon hearing their name.  If my daughter brought home a Chardonnay as her best friend or a Keanu as her first boyfriend I would probably have a bit of a sly laugh to myself and inwardly raise my eyebrows but I can't imagine ever deciding I didn't like the kid on the basis of their name and not giving them a chance.  Seems a bit daft to me.

But your initial thoughts are prejudiced in the same way as mine and ultimately the apprentice buffoon but as a sensible non lazy person you can go beyond those thoughts.

And people make initial impressions of others very quickly, I forget how long but it is in seconds, and yes some bodies name counts towards that too. Once that impression is formed it is hard to shift.

I have to admit that when I first met them I was slightly prejudiced and assumed with these names that they had to be strippers.

It turned out they actually were strippers but that's not the point.

They'd approach me dressed in pretty much nothing and start making small talk. You know the sort of thing... Hi how are you? where you from? what do you do? etc...

I'd obviously reply and then they'd tell me their names.

As soon as I heard the name I assumed they were strippers and thrust a fifty at them and asked for a dance!! Imagine if I got it wrong?? The embarrassment would've been unbearable!!

I think its great when people like her share their opinions in public.
It makes it so much easier to identify them as twats, instead of having to make ill informed guesses
based on name / class / race etc.........
