Title: Guess the object discussion thread Post by: outragous76 on July 19, 2013, 04:27:31 PM Acid - please confirm you are happy we discuss this options before guessing (ie is you agreement with your mate that it can be discussed? It does say "people")
Cheers Title: Re: Guess the object discussion thread Post by: kinboshi on July 19, 2013, 04:28:25 PM We could always do it via PM otherwise.
Title: Re: Guess the object discussion thread Post by: outragous76 on July 19, 2013, 04:59:35 PM Meh - lets discuss it anyway
The thing that I cant reconcile is that its more than 100 years old but not made of metal. It rules out lots of coins, medieval weapons and armour, What about something like a postage stamp maybe - a penny black? Title: Re: Guess the object discussion thread Post by: kinboshi on July 19, 2013, 05:01:00 PM It isn't crafted!
Title: Re: Guess the object discussion thread Post by: theprawnidentity on July 19, 2013, 05:01:28 PM Round up
It's between 100-1000 years old. It's organic. Not a religious artefact. Not been crafted. Not heavy. Would sell for over £1,000 (probably). Not functional. Not metal. From outside the UK. Isn't a single word Not found below ground Not of animal origin FOI Its not an Egg Yolk Dinosaur Tooth Tiger tooth Rhino horn Tortoise shell Missed a couple: is NOT living is NOT an item which you would say is commonly held by the population (ie at least once in their lifetime) Title: Re: Guess the object discussion thread Post by: kinboshi on July 19, 2013, 05:02:29 PM For me that leaves something in pretty much its natural state (although it's not living), and not of animal origin (so not a tooth, bone, hair, ivory, etc.):
An old flower An dried piece of fruit/vegetable Spices Seeds :dontask: Title: Re: Guess the object discussion thread Post by: outragous76 on July 19, 2013, 05:02:41 PM It isn't crafted! so can we assume that it therefore must be naturally formed? I was thinking you can omit all rocks etc as it couldn't be <1000 years old Title: Re: Guess the object discussion thread Post by: theprawnidentity on July 19, 2013, 05:02:46 PM Worth asking the question 'was it ever alive?'?
Title: Re: Guess the object discussion thread Post by: The Camel on July 19, 2013, 05:02:56 PM Hmm coral or a pearl?
Title: Re: Guess the object discussion thread Post by: kinboshi on July 19, 2013, 05:03:41 PM Unless of course it HAS been crafted, and is of human origin (and therefore animal origin).
Title: Re: Guess the object discussion thread Post by: kinboshi on July 19, 2013, 05:03:49 PM Title: Re: Guess the object discussion thread Post by: theprawnidentity on July 19, 2013, 05:04:32 PM It isn't crafted! so can we assume that it therefore must be naturally formed? I was thinking you can omit all rocks etc as it couldn't be <1000 years old Still could be a rock formed from a recent volcanic eruption or something? Title: Re: Guess the object discussion thread Post by: kinboshi on July 19, 2013, 05:06:01 PM Potentially it could be something like soil from the Amazon, but that's not worth £1,000.
So maybe a piece of turf from a sporting venue (non-UK)? Could argue that it's been crafted though... Rules out rocks, as does the 1,000 years thing. Title: Re: Guess the object discussion thread Post by: outragous76 on July 19, 2013, 05:07:28 PM so are we down to minerals?
Title: Re: Guess the object discussion thread Post by: kinboshi on July 19, 2013, 05:07:48 PM so are we down to minerals? Nope, it's not minerals. They're not organic. Title: Re: Guess the object discussion thread Post by: kinboshi on July 19, 2013, 05:08:34 PM For me that leaves something in pretty much its natural state (although it's not living), and not of animal origin (so not a tooth, bone, hair, ivory, etc.): An old flower An dried piece of fruit/vegetable Spices Seeds :dontask: Anything like fossils, amber, etc., can be ruled out as they're >1000 years old. Title: Re: Guess the object discussion thread Post by: theprawnidentity on July 19, 2013, 05:11:36 PM What about something that has been preserved, like food rations from somewhere?
Title: Re: Guess the object discussion thread Post by: The Camel on July 19, 2013, 05:34:16 PM I'm no biologist, but pearls come from oysters which are animals and I thought coral was an animal. Title: Re: Guess the object discussion thread Post by: Graham C on July 19, 2013, 05:35:50 PM Could it be something like an old hailstone? Some sort of super weather phenomenon?
Title: Re: Guess the object discussion thread Post by: Acidmouse on July 19, 2013, 05:49:50 PM Let me. Get home to answer this and other thread my phone crap for typing and i am watching cricket *)
Title: Re: Guess the object discussion thread Post by: kinboshi on July 19, 2013, 06:05:44 PM I'm no biologist, but pearls come from oysters which are animals and I thought coral was an animal. Yes, he said it's not from animal origin. In the old game of 20 Questions, you would ask "Is it animal, vegetable or mineral?" We know it's organic (so not mineral), we know it's not animal, which leaves 'vegetable'. Still no bloody idea though! Title: Re: Guess the object discussion thread Post by: Redsgirl on July 20, 2013, 09:58:15 AM Excsqueeze me, but whats going on now?
Just catching up with these threads this morning and I'm confused. Is this a different object from Mozart's hair or is the other thread the continuation of this one? Title: Re: Guess the object discussion thread Post by: kinboshi on July 20, 2013, 10:09:46 AM This was a thread started because any discussion we had on the guessing thread Acid was counting as a question. The confusion is that he sent us on a wild-goose chase as we were told it wasn't of 'animal origin'...

Then you narrow the column, then the section and finally the word.
You can do that in under 20 without difficulty in theory. Title: Re: Guess the object discussion thread Post by: kinboshi on July 20, 2013, 11:16:59 AM There is a trick if it is a single word that would appear in the dictionary, which is to keep halving the range and you'll find a single page. Then you narrow the column, then the section and finally the word. You can do that in under 20 without difficulty in theory. I could see your plan when you asked that originally. All the questions asked should really be doing the same sort of thing. Trying to halve the remaining options, and with 20 iterations, it should be guessable. Title: Re: Guess the object discussion thread Post by: Redsgirl on July 20, 2013, 01:31:53 PM On the new game I got an ambiguous no on textile.
I'm wondering now about the man made question, would it refer to the item or the material used, i:e a rubber dingy? Title: Re: Guess the object discussion thread Post by: kinboshi on July 20, 2013, 01:51:09 PM On the new game I got an ambiguous no on textile. I'm wondering now about the man made question, would it refer to the item or the material used, i:e a rubber dingy? Man-made would mean it's been crafted by a man/woman - so it's not something in its natural state - such as a tree, a fossil, a stalactite, a river or indeed a lock of Mozart's hair. A rubber dingy would be man-made. Title: Re: Guess the object discussion thread Post by: Ironside on July 20, 2013, 02:12:52 PM Object 2 is man made I was thinking dingy also thinking cable or fishing net
